Chapter 4: The Photograph That Changed Everything

I stared at the photograph on my phone until the screen dimmed.

My mother stood beside Ethan outside a hospital room, holding a bouquet of white flowers. Ethan was holding a newborn baby. His expression wasn't one of a frightened man who had accidentally become a father.

He was smiling.

And my mother was smiling too.

The photograph had been taken three weeks earlier.

Three weeks before the baby shower.

Three weeks before Vanessa stood in front of our friends and pretended she was still pregnant.

Three weeks before my four-year-old daughter exposed the entire lie.

I looked up at my mother.

"Explain this.""

She glanced at my phone.

Then her face crumpled.

"Oh, Daniel.""

"Don't say my name like that. Tell me what happened.""

My mother stepped into the living room and closed the door behind her.

Chloe followed her.

Vanessa remained beside the fireplace, her hands pressed against her stomach.

Rachel was sitting on the sofa with Oliver in her arms.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, my mother took a shaky breath.

"Ethan called me the night Oliver was born.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Of course he did.""

"He was frightened.""

"Frightened of what? Having a child?""

"Daniel, please.""

"No. You don't get to ask me to be patient anymore.""

My mother sat down.

She looked suddenly older than I remembered.

"Ethan told me Vanessa had gone into labor. He said she was at St. Mary's and that he needed someone to be there.""

"Why didn't he call me?""

"He didn't want you to find out.""

I stared at her.

"That should have been your first clue that something was terribly wrong.""

She nodded.

"I know.""

"Keep going.""

She folded her hands in her lap.

"When I arrived, Vanessa was already in the recovery room. Ethan was outside holding the baby. He told me the child was his.""

"And you congratulated him?""

Her eyes filled.

"I didn't know what else to do.""

"You could have called me.""

"I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"Of losing my family.""

I shook my head.

"You were willing to let me lose mine.""

She began crying.

Ethan had apparently told her that he and Vanessa had been involved for more than a year. He also told her that Vanessa wanted to keep the baby.

My mother had tried to persuade him to take responsibility.

But Ethan refused.

According to her, he insisted that he couldn't raise a child with his brother's wife.

"He said he was going to leave town," she whispered.

"Did he?""

"No. He stayed for several days.""

"Why?""

My mother looked toward the guest room.

"Because something happened with the baby.""

Rachel slowly lifted her head.

"What happened?""

My mother turned toward her.

"I thought you knew.""

Rachel shook her head.

"I was assigned to Vanessa's prenatal care, but I wasn't present for every conversation.""

My mother looked at me again.

"Oliver had a medical complication shortly after birth. The doctors needed to run additional tests. Ethan panicked.""

I glanced at the baby.

He was sleeping peacefully.

"What complication?""

My mother hesitated.

"His blood tests showed something unusual. The doctors wanted to investigate whether he had inherited a certain blood disorder.""

Rachel frowned.

"That isn't something you can diagnose from a single screening.""

"I know," my mother replied.

"They said more tests were necessary.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"Did you know?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

She looked away.

My mother continued.

"Ethan became convinced the baby would have lifelong medical problems. He said he wasn't prepared for that responsibility.""

Rachel's expression hardened.

"That's not how newborn screening works. An abnormal result is a reason for follow-up testing, not a final diagnosis.""

My mother lowered her eyes.

"I understand that now.""

"Then what happened?"" I asked.

"Ethan left the hospital. Vanessa was still recovering, and I stayed with her.""

I stared at her.

"How long?""

"Two days.""

"And after that?""

"She asked me to help her arrange somewhere for Oliver to stay temporarily.""

Rachel immediately shook her head.

"Vanessa told me she wanted to raise him.""

My mother looked uncomfortable.

"She did. But she was afraid Daniel would find out.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"So you helped her hide her own newborn?""

"I arranged for her to stay with a relative for a few days while she recovered.""

"Which relative?""

My mother looked toward Vanessa.

Vanessa finally spoke.

"An aunt.""

"What aunt?""

She swallowed.

"My mother's sister. Aunt Margaret.""

I knew Margaret.

She lived outside Hartford and had been at our wedding.

I looked at my wife.

"You took Ethan's baby to your aunt's house and let me believe you were still pregnant?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I didn't take him. Mom helped arrange everything.""

"Stop calling her Mom. She's my mother too.""

The words came out harsher than I intended.

My mother flinched.

Rachel stood.

"There's something else you need to understand, Daniel.""

I turned toward her.

"Go ahead.""

"Vanessa didn't just want to hide the pregnancy. She wanted to create a believable story for Oliver's arrival.""

Rachel reached into the diaper bag.

She pulled out a small folder containing printed hospital documents and several appointment cards.

"These were in the bag when she asked me to bring him here.""

I examined them.

There were discharge instructions, follow-up appointment details, and a handwritten list.

The list contained names.

Daniel.

Patricia.

Chloe.

Ethan.

Beside each name was a short note.

Next to mine, Vanessa had written:

Husband. Tell him baby was born early.

Next to my mother's name:

Already knows. Keep calm.

Next to Chloe's:

Make sure she doesn't contradict me.

Beside Ethan's name:

He must agree to be involved.

I looked up.

"She had a script.""

Rachel nodded.

"She wanted everyone to tell the same story.""

I turned toward Vanessa.

"Did you write this?""

She stared at the floor.

"Yes.""

I put the folder down.

"Why did you need Ethan involved if you planned to pretend I was the father?""

Vanessa began shaking.

"Because I thought he would change his mind.""

My mother spoke quietly.

"He told me something else that night.""

I looked at her.

"What?""

She swallowed.

"Ethan said he was going to tell Daniel the truth himself.""

I frowned.

"When?""

"After the baby shower.""

My stomach tightened.

"Why after the shower?""

My mother looked at Vanessa.

"Because Vanessa had threatened him.""

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

"That's not true!""

My mother continued.

"She told him that if he abandoned Oliver, she would tell everyone about the affair. She also said she would expose something he had done at work.""

I stared at Vanessa.

"What did you threaten him with?""

She shook her head.

"Nothing important.""

My mother looked at me.

"Daniel, your brother has been taking money from the company.""

The room went silent.

I felt as though someone had punched me in the chest.

"What company?""

My mother looked confused.

"Your company.""

I turned toward Vanessa.

"What is she talking about?""

Vanessa's lips parted.

Then she closed them.

I pulled out my phone and called my office.

My operations director, Michael, answered after two rings.

"Daniel? Everything okay?""

"I need you to check something for me.""

"Sure.""

"Has Ethan accessed any of the company's financial accounts recently?""

Michael paused.

"Why?""

"Just answer me.""

"I'll need to check the audit logs.""

"Do it now.""

I heard keyboard tapping.

Then silence.

Finally, Michael spoke.

"Daniel, there's something you should know.""

My stomach tightened.

"What?""

"Three weeks ago, our accounting system flagged several transfers from the development account. They were approved under your authorization.""

I stopped breathing.

"My authorization?""

"Yes. But the approval came from a device registered to Ethan.""

I looked at my brother's photograph again.

"What amount?""

Michael hesitated.

"Approximately two hundred and eighty thousand dollars.""

I closed my eyes.

"Freeze the account. Preserve every record. Don't confront anyone until I tell you.""

"Understood.""

I ended the call.

Then I looked at Vanessa.

"Did you know Ethan was stealing from my company?""

She began crying.

"I didn't know it was that much.""

My mother looked horrified.

"Vanessa?""

My wife shook her head.

"He told me he was borrowing money.""

I stared at her.

"From my company?""

"He said he would pay it back.""

I laughed.

This time, there was nothing remotely human about the sound.

The affair.

The fake pregnancy.

The newborn.

The forged family story.

And now nearly three hundred thousand dollars.

I had been living with a stranger.

My phone vibrated again.

An email from Michael.

Subject: URGENT — AUTHORIZATION DISCREPANCY.

I opened it.

There were several attachments.

The first showed the suspicious transfers.

The second showed the devices used to approve them.

The third showed a document that had supposedly authorized Ethan to access the account.

At the bottom was my signature.

Except I hadn't signed it.

Someone had copied my signature.

I looked toward Vanessa.

"Did you give Ethan access to my office?""

She didn't answer.

Then my mother whispered something that made me turn toward her.

"Daniel, there's one more thing.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

She looked at Vanessa.

Then at the photograph.

"Ethan didn't come to the hospital because he wanted to see his son.""

My stomach dropped.

"Why did he come?""

My mother swallowed.

"He came to get you to sign something.""

And suddenly, I understood why the photograph had been taken.

It wasn't a family picture.

It was evidence.

May you like

Evidence of a meeting that had never been disclosed.

But what exactly had my brother wanted me to sign?
