Chapter 8: The Truth Behind My Father’s Death
I didn’t sleep.
Again.
It felt like my entire life had become a series of sleepless nights caused by truths that arrived too late.
First Daniel.
Then Claire.
Now my father.
A man I had buried years ago was suddenly at the center of everything.
The next morning, Rachel met me outside the courthouse where she worked with her attorney.
She looked exhausted.
Older.
For once, she wasn’t trying to defend herself.
She simply looked like someone who had been carrying a weight too heavy for too long.
“I found these,” she said.
She handed me a folder.
Inside were copies of hospital documents.
“I shouldn’t have had access.””
“How did you get them?””
She looked away.
“I paid for them.””
I stared.
“More money?””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
I almost walked away.
But then I remembered.
Fifty thousand dollars.
A private investigator.
A secret child.
Everything she had done suddenly had another layer.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was scared.””
“Of what?””
“That you would hate me before I could explain.””
I looked at her.
“I already hated what you did.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
We sat on a bench outside the building.
For the first time in months, we weren’t husband and wife.
We were two people looking at the damage between us.
“Why did you really start investigating me?”” I asked.
Rachel stared at the folder.
“Because I thought you knew.””
“Knew what?””
“That Daniel existed.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“I thought your father told you.””
“Why would you think that?””
“Because after your father died, he left something with me.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Rachel reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small key.
I recognized it immediately.
A key to a safety deposit box.
“Where did you get that?””
“Your father.””
“When?””
“The night he died.””
I stared at her.
“You had this for twenty-one years?””
She nodded.
“I was afraid to open it.””
“Why?””
“Because he told me if I opened it, I would have to tell you everything.””
I looked at the key.
“You knew this whole time?””
“I knew there was something.””
Her voice broke.
“But I didn’t know what.””
I wanted to be angry.
I was angry.
But underneath that anger was something else.
A terrible realization.
Everyone was carrying pieces of my life.
Everyone except me.
That afternoon, we opened the safety deposit box.
The bank employee left us alone.
Inside was a small envelope.
A photograph.
And a flash drive.
The photograph was old.
It showed my father.
Michael.
And a third person.
A man I didn’t recognize.
On the back, my father had written:
The three people who destroyed everything.
Rachel looked at me.
“Do you know him?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
We inserted the flash drive into my laptop.
There was only one file.
A video.
The screen showed my father sitting in a room.
He looked older than I remembered.
Tired.
Afraid.
“Ethan,” he said.
I froze.
He was talking to me.
“If you are watching this, then I failed.””
My eyes burned.
“I wanted to tell you the truth myself.””
My father looked directly into the camera.
“I have made mistakes. More than I can count.””
He paused.
“But there is one mistake I regret more than anything.””
The video continued.
“I trusted my brother.””
Rachel covered her mouth.
My father continued.
“Michael helped me hide my mistakes. He helped me protect my reputation.””
His expression changed.
“But eventually, protecting me became protecting himself.””
I leaned closer.
“What did you do, Dad?””
The answer came seconds later.
“Michael discovered that I planned to confess everything.””
My father looked down.
“He threatened me.””
The room went silent.
“He said if I destroyed the family, he would destroy me first.””
My hands trembled.
Then my father said something that made my blood freeze.
“Michael was not responsible for my death.””
I looked at Rachel.
“What?””
The video continued.
“But he knows who was.””
My heart pounded.
My father leaned closer to the camera.
“Ethan, the person you trust the most may be the person who has lied to you the longest.””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Rachel whispered:
“Who was he talking about?””
I looked at the screen.
The answer terrified me.
Because suddenly, I knew.
There was only one person who had been beside me through everything.
Someone who had always claimed to be protecting me.
May you like
Someone who had known every secret.
My mother.
