Chapter 7: The Sister Hidden in the Shadows

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

The woman standing in front of me was a stranger.

But the way she looked at me wasn’t.

There was something familiar in her eyes.

Something I couldn’t explain.

I had spent my entire life believing I was an only child.

I had grown up imagining my parents had one son.

Me.

But standing there on my uncle’s porch was someone who carried a piece of my family history that had been hidden from me.

“My sister?”” I repeated.

The word felt impossible.

Claire nodded slowly.

“I know how this sounds.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t.””

She looked down.

“I’ve imagined this moment for years.””

I stared at Michael.

“You knew?””

His silence was enough.

“You knew I had a sister.””

Michael rubbed his forehead.

“Ethan…”

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“Don’t say my name like you’re sorry.””

Claire stepped forward.

“Please don’t blame him for everything.””

I looked at her.

“That’s interesting.””

“What?””

“Because everyone in my life keeps saying the same thing.””

I pointed between them.

“Don’t blame Rachel. Don’t blame my parents. Don’t blame Michael.””

My chest tightened.

“Who exactly am I allowed to blame?””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew.

Everyone had played a part.

I walked away from the house before I said something I couldn’t take back.

Claire followed me.

“Ethan.””

I stopped.

“What?””

She looked nervous.

“I didn’t want this.””

I turned around.

“You didn’t want to exist?””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I didn’t want to be a secret.””

That sentence silenced me.

Because I understood it.

More than anyone.

I knew what it felt like to have your life changed by information you were never allowed to have.

“How old are you?””

“Thirty-seven.””

I stared.

“Thirty-seven?””

She nodded.

“You were born five years after me.””

My head spun.

“My parents had another child after me?””

Claire looked away.

“Not exactly.””

That answer made my stomach tighten.

“What does that mean?””

She took a deep breath.

“My mother was someone your father knew before he married your mother.””

I felt the pieces falling into place.

Another woman.

Another child.

Another secret.

“Did my father know about you?””

Claire looked at the ground.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

“Did my mother?””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

Another secret.

Another agreement.

Another decision made without me.

“What happened?””

Claire hesitated.

“My mother didn’t want your father to choose between two families.””

“So she disappeared?””

“She left.””

“Why?””

Claire swallowed.

“Because Michael paid her.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

Michael had followed us outside.

“Ethan, listen.””

“No.””

I turned toward him.

“Every time someone says that, it means I’m about to hear another excuse.””

Michael looked exhausted.

“I paid Claire’s mother because your father begged me to.””

I laughed.

“Your story changes every five minutes.””

“It’s the truth.””

“Then tell me the whole truth.””

Michael was quiet.

Finally, he said:

“Your father made mistakes.””

I waited.

“He loved your mother. But before they married, he had another relationship.””

“With Claire’s mother.””

“Yes.””

“And Daniel?””

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“So my father had two children before he built a life with my mother.””

Michael nodded.

“But he regretted what happened.””

“Regret doesn’t erase people.””

“I know.””

The honesty surprised me.

Michael looked at Claire.

“She deserved better.””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“But I didn’t get better.””

Nobody spoke.

The silence was heavy.

Then my phone rang.

I looked down.

It was Rachel.

I almost ignored it.

But something told me to answer.

“What?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Ethan, where are you?””

“Why?””

“Because I found something.””

I looked at Claire.

“What?””

A pause.

Then Rachel whispered:

“Proof that Michael wasn’t just hiding secrets.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What proof?””

“Your father’s medical records.””

My heart stopped.

“What about them?””

“I found inconsistencies.””

Michael’s expression changed.

He heard Rachel’s voice through the phone.

“What kind of inconsistencies?””

Rachel sounded terrified.

“The night your father died…”

I waited.

“The hospital records were changed.””

Nobody moved.

“What are you saying?””

Rachel took a shaky breath.

“I’m saying your father’s death may not have been natural.””

The world seemed to go quiet.

I looked at Michael.

His face had lost all color.

May you like

“Ethan,” Rachel whispered.

“Someone may have killed your father.””
