Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Money

I didn’t sleep that night.

After Emily left, I sat alone in my living room until sunrise.

The folder she mentioned kept replaying in my mind.

Documents.

Payments.

A secret.

Someone connected to me.

I had spent weeks believing my biggest betrayal was losing $50,000.

Now I wasn’t even sure I understood what betrayal meant anymore.

The next morning, Emily came back with the folder.

She placed it on my kitchen table.

“I’m sorry I waited.””

I stared at the brown envelope.

“How long?””

She looked away.

“Almost a year.””

My chest tightened.

“A year?””

“I didn’t know what to do.””

I opened the folder.

Inside were printed emails, bank statements, and handwritten notes.

The first page was a payment record.

A company name.

A date.

A signature.

Rachel’s signature.

My hands shook.

“Emily, what is this?””

She sat across from me.

“Mom hired a private investigator.””

I looked up.

“A private investigator?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Emily’s eyes became glassy.

“Because she thought you were hiding something.””

I almost laughed.

“Me?””

“I know.””

“No, Emily. Your mother took fifty thousand dollars from us and hired someone to investigate me?””

She nodded.

“But that’s not the worst part.””

I turned another page.

There were pictures.

Photographs of me.

Leaving work.

Getting coffee.

Walking into a hardware store.

Normal things.

Everyday things.

But someone had been following me.

Someone had been watching me.

“Why would she do this?””

Emily’s voice was quiet.

“Because she wanted evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me more than anything.

Finally, she said:

“She thought you had a secret family.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“She believed you were cheating.””

I pushed the papers away.

“That’s insane.””

“I know.””

“Did she find anything?””

Emily looked at the floor.

“Yes.””

My heart dropped.

“What?””

“She found something.””

The kitchen suddenly felt too small.

“What did she find?””

Emily reached into the folder and pulled out another document.

It was old.

Yellowed.

Folded several times.

She slid it toward me.

I opened it.

The first thing I saw was my name.

Then a date.

A date from twenty-one years ago.

The date Emily was born.

I looked at my daughter.

“Why is my name on this?””

Emily started crying.

“Because Mom thought you already knew.””

“Knew what?””

She covered her mouth.

“Dad…”

The front door suddenly opened.

We both froze.

Rachel stood there.

I hadn’t heard her arrive.

She looked at the papers on the table.

Then at Emily.

Her face changed.

Not fear.

Anger.

“What are you doing?””

Emily stood up.

“Mom…”

Rachel walked into the kitchen.

“Give me that folder.””

I stood between them.

“No.””

Her eyes locked onto mine.

“Ethan, you don’t understand what you’re looking at.””

“Then explain it.””

Silence.

“Explain why you spent fifty thousand dollars investigating me.””

Rachel’s jaw tightened.

“Because I had to know the truth.””

“What truth?””

She looked at Emily.

Then back at me.

“You really want to do this here?””

“Yes.””

My voice surprised even me.

“Yes, Rachel. After twenty-two years, I think I deserve the truth.””

She crossed her arms.

“You want the truth? Fine.””

She stepped closer.

“I thought you betrayed me first.””

I stared at her.

“What are you talking about?””

Her voice cracked.

“Twenty-one years ago, I found out something about Emily.””

My entire body went still.

“What about Emily?””

Rachel looked at our daughter.

Then whispered:

“She isn’t the only child you almost lost.””

Emily gasped.

I looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.

For the first time in months, she looked afraid.

Not angry.

Afraid.

“I didn’t take that money because I wanted a new life.””

She pointed at the folder.

“I took it because I was trying to uncover what happened before Emily was born.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“No, Rachel. Don’t do this.””

“I found records.””

“What records?””

Her voice became barely audible.

“Medical records.””

The room went silent.

Emily wiped her tears.

“Mom, tell him.””

Rachel looked at me.

And then she said the sentence that changed everything.

“Ethan… there’s a chance Emily isn’t the only child you have.””

I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.

A million thoughts crashed together.

Twenty-one years.

A hidden child.

A secret.

My wife had spent fifty thousand dollars searching for answers.

But why?

And why had she waited until now?

I looked at Rachel.

“Who is this child?””

She opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

The color drained from her face.

I noticed the name.

A name I had never seen before.

Rachel answered.

“Hello?””

She listened.

Then whispered:

“No… you promised you would never contact us again.””

My heart started pounding.

“Who is that?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

She turned away.

Then the person on the phone said something that made her drop the device.

I picked it up.

The call was still connected.

A man’s voice came through.

“Ethan Carter?””

I froze.

“Yes?””

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“I think you deserve to meet your son.””
