Chapter 6: The Man Who Buried the Truth
I read my mother’s letter in Daniel’s apartment while the world outside continued like nothing had changed.
Cars passed.
People laughed on the sidewalk.
A dog barked somewhere nearby.
Everything looked normal.
But my life wasn’t normal anymore.
Not even close.
My mother’s letter was dated twenty-one years earlier.
Before my father died.
Before Daniel disappeared from our lives.
Before I became a husband and father.
Before I built my entire identity around a story that wasn’t true.
Ethan,
If you ever read this, I need you to know that I tried to stop what happened.
I swallowed.
Tried to stop what happened.
Those words terrified me.
Your father discovered that Michael had been hiding money from the family business. When your father confronted him, Michael threatened to expose everything about Rachel and Daniel.
I stopped reading.
My uncle knew.
Not only did he know.
He used the secret.
I looked at Daniel.
“Your existence was used as a weapon.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Sounds familiar.””
I looked back at the letter.
Michael knew Ethan loved his family more than anything. He knew the truth about Daniel would destroy him. He used that fear to control your father.
My hands tightened.
My father wasn’t hiding the truth because he wanted to.
He was being trapped.
The night your father died, he planned to tell Ethan everything.
I closed my eyes.
That night again.
The night everyone kept hiding.
Michael came to the house before Ethan arrived.
My breathing stopped.
My uncle was there.
They argued.
I continued.
Your father told Michael he was going to confess everything. He said he would rather lose Ethan’s forgiveness than continue living a lie.
A tear fell onto the paper.
My father wanted to tell me.
He tried.
Michael left angry. Thirty minutes later, your father collapsed.
I looked up.
Daniel was staring at me.
“What does it say?””
I couldn’t answer immediately.
Because I already knew what I was thinking.
My father’s death.
Rachel’s silence.
My uncle’s secret.
Everything connected.
But there was still one impossible question.
Was my uncle responsible?
I finished reading.
The last paragraph was the shortest.
And the most terrifying.
Ethan, I don’t know if Michael caused what happened to your father. I don’t have proof. But I know this: he was the last person to see your father alive, and he is the reason your family has lived in fear for twenty-one years.
I folded the letter.
I felt sick.
Not because I knew the truth.
Because I realized I still didn’t know all of it.
That evening, I went to confront Michael.
He lived fifteen minutes away in the same neighborhood.
The same man who had attended every holiday.
The same man who called me “son.””
He opened the door with a smile.
“Ethan. What brings you here?””
I looked at him.
“Did you know about Daniel?””
The smile disappeared.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
“Yes.””
I stepped back.
“You’re not even going to deny it?””
He sighed.
“I knew this day would come.””
My blood ran cold.
“You were waiting for it?””
“No.””
He looked tired.
“I was afraid of it.””
“Why?””
He looked at the street.
Then back at me.
“Because your father should have told you.””
“My father tried.””
Michael’s face changed.
“You spoke to your mother.””
“I read the letters.””
He went quiet.
Then he stepped outside and closed the door behind him.
“Ethan, there are things you don’t understand.””
“That’s the problem.””
My voice shook.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
He looked away.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I laughed.
“Everyone says that too.””
“It’s true.””
“You destroyed my family.””
“No.””
He looked directly at me.
“I saved it.””
The confidence in his voice made me angry.
“How?””
“By keeping one secret buried.””
“What secret?””
Michael stared at me.
Then he said:
“The truth about Daniel was never the biggest secret.””
My heart sank.
“Then what was?””
He hesitated.
And for the first time in my life, I saw fear in my uncle’s eyes.
“Your father wasn’t the only one who had another child.””
I froze.
“What?””
Michael looked at me.
“Ethan…”
The front door behind him opened.
A woman stepped outside.
A woman I had never seen before.
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
Then she said:
“I’m sorry.””
I stared at her.
“Who are you?””
She took a shaky breath.
“My name is Claire.””
She looked at Michael.
May you like
Then back at me.
“And I’m your sister.””
