Chapter 7: The Document That Could Have Stolen My Daughter's Future
Six months before Daniel confessed to his affair, he had already signed a document designed to take control of my inheritance.
I stared at the date.
Then I looked at Claire.
"Tell me I'm misunderstanding this.""
Claire adjusted her glasses and examined the final page again.
"I'm afraid you're not.""
"Why would he sign something like this?""
"Because someone wanted to establish legal authority over your beneficial interest in the Ashford trust.""
"Someone?""
Claire looked at me.
"We need to establish whether Daniel acted independently or whether Victor instructed him.""
I shook my head.
"He knew about the trust before I did?""
"Possibly.""
"How?""
Claire turned the document toward me.
"Look at the witness signature.""
I leaned closer.
There were two names.
Daniel Ashford.
And Margaret Ashford.
My mother-in-law.
I felt a sudden wave of nausea.
"Margaret witnessed this?""
"Yes.""
"She knew?""
"At the very least, she knew the document existed.""
I looked at the date again.
Six months earlier.
At that time, Daniel had been attending prenatal appointments with me. He had been kissing my forehead every morning. He had been telling our friends how excited he was to become a father.
And behind my back, he had been preparing paperwork that could transfer control of my inheritance if I became unable to exercise my legal rights.
"Claire, what exactly does 'unable to exercise her legal rights' mean?""
"It can cover several circumstances, depending on the governing documents. Serious incapacity, a court determination, or certain other legally established conditions.""
"Could someone use it if I died during childbirth?""
Claire paused.
"That possibility would need to be examined against the trust's full terms.""
I looked at my stomach.
My daughter moved gently beneath my palm.
Suddenly, the hospital room seemed too small.
"Daniel wanted to become the person controlling everything if something happened to me.""
"That is one possible interpretation.""
"Why are you being so careful with your words?""
"Because I want evidence, Evelyn. Not assumptions. We have enough reason to investigate this without making claims we cannot yet prove.""
I nodded.
She was right.
But I couldn't stop thinking about Daniel's phone call.
Before our daughter is born, I need you to sign one document.
He hadn't been asking for insurance authorization.
He had been asking me to cooperate with something I didn't understand.
And now I knew why.
At 9:15 the following morning, Special Agent Rachel Collins arrived at the hospital.
She carried a tablet and a thick folder.
"Good morning, Mrs. Ashford.""
"Please. Call me Evelyn.""
She smiled briefly.
"All right, Evelyn. I've reviewed the preliminary information from yesterday's incident.""
Claire stood beside the window.
Agent Collins placed the folder on the table.
"First, how is the baby?""
"She's fine. The doctors want me to remain here for observation.""
"Good. Your safety is important.""
She opened the folder.
"Second, we need to discuss the documents your attorney discovered.""
Claire handed her a copy.
Agent Collins read the first page.
Then the second.
Her expression became more serious.
"Where did this come from?""
"An original trust file my father left with my attorney," I explained.
"Was it in your possession before yesterday?""
"No. Claire brought it to me.""
Agent Collins nodded.
"Has anyone else seen the original?""
"Not to my knowledge.""
She studied the signatures.
"Did you authorize this arrangement?""
"No.""
"Did you sign anything agreeing to transfer authority over your beneficial interest?""
"Absolutely not.""
Agent Collins made a note.
"That's important.""
She turned another page.
"There's something else.""
She showed me a photograph taken from the ballroom's security footage.
It showed Victor standing beside Daniel, speaking quietly near the windows.
The timestamp read 1:54 p.m.
"What am I looking at?""
"An interaction between your husband and father-in-law. We have several minutes of footage from before our agents entered the ballroom.""
I studied the image.
Daniel was holding his phone.
Victor was pointing toward the entrance.
"Did they know the agents were coming?""
"We're examining that possibility.""
Agent Collins enlarged the photograph.
"Look at Daniel's hand.""
I leaned forward.
He was holding a small folded piece of paper.
"What is that?""
"We don't know yet.""
Claire stepped closer.
"Could it be related to the trust?""
"Possibly.""
Agent Collins changed the image.
This time, the photograph showed Daniel handing something to Celeste.
Celeste was smiling.
Then she placed the item inside her handbag.
I stared.
"What did he give her?""
"That's what we'd like to establish.""
Agent Collins closed the tablet.
"There's one more matter. Celeste has requested legal representation, and she has indicated that she wants to cooperate.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"She says she has information concerning Daniel's financial activities.""
I almost laughed.
"She was happy enough to stand beside him yesterday.""
"People sometimes reconsider their position when circumstances change.""
Claire crossed her arms.
"Has she made a formal statement?""
"Not yet.""
Agent Collins looked at me.
"But she has asked to speak with you.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Why me?""
"She says there's something you need to know about your pregnancy.""
Celeste arrived two hours later.
She was no longer wearing her designer pink dress.
Instead, she wore black trousers, a cream blouse, and a long coat.
Without the makeup and jewelry, she looked considerably younger.
She stopped at the doorway.
"Evelyn.""
I didn't invite her to sit.
"What do you want?""
She glanced at Agent Collins.
"Can we speak privately?""
"No," I said.
Agent Collins nodded.
"That's entirely your choice.""
Celeste swallowed.
"Fine.""
She sat in the chair opposite my bed.
For several seconds, she stared at her hands.
Then she spoke.
"I know you hate me.""
"That's not particularly surprising.""
"I deserve that.""
I looked at her.
"Then why are you here?""
She took a breath.
"Because Daniel lied to both of us.""
I almost smiled.
"How original.""
"No. You don't understand.""
"Then explain.""
Celeste opened her handbag and removed a small envelope.
She placed it on the table.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed Daniel standing outside a private medical building.
Beside him was a woman in a white coat.
I recognized the building.
It was the private clinic Daniel had mentioned several times during my pregnancy.
He had once suggested that I transfer my prenatal care there because it was closer to his office.
I had refused.
"What is this?""
Celeste looked at Agent Collins.
"Can I?""
The agent nodded.
Celeste turned back to me.
"Three months ago, Daniel took me there. He said he wanted to arrange everything before the baby arrived.""
"Your baby?""
She shook her head.
"That's what I thought.""
My heart began beating faster.
"What do you mean?""
"He told me he was going to arrange a private delivery and make sure I had everything I needed.""
I stared at her.
"Why would he arrange a delivery?""
She looked down.
"Because he said the baby would be important to the family's future.""
A cold sensation spread through my body.
"Celeste, what are you saying?""
She began crying.
"Daniel told me that you were going to have a difficult delivery.""
I couldn't speak.
"He said your doctors were worried. He said there was a possibility you wouldn't survive.""
I gripped the blanket.
"What?""
"He told me that if something happened to you, he would need to take responsibility for your daughter and the family trust.""
Claire stood abruptly.
"Did he tell you this before or after he took you to the clinic?""
"Before.""
Agent Collins leaned forward.
"Did you see any medical documents?""
Celeste nodded.
"Yes. Daniel showed me a file.""
"What did it contain?""
"An ultrasound report. And something about Evelyn's delivery.""
I shook my head.
"My delivery isn't scheduled until next month.""
Celeste wiped her cheeks.
"He said that could change.""
Silence filled the room.
I looked at her.
"Did Daniel tell you he was planning to hurt me?""
She shook her head quickly.
"No. I swear. I thought he was just preparing for the possibility that something might happen naturally.""
"Then why are you here?""
Her face crumpled.
"Because last night, after the agents took his father, Daniel called me.""
She reached into her handbag again.
This time, she removed a small voice recorder.
"He told me to destroy everything I had.""
Agent Collins took the device.
"What's on it?""
Celeste looked at me.
"A conversation.""
"With Daniel?""
She nodded.
"From last week.""
Agent Collins placed the recorder on the table.
"Would you be willing to let us listen?""
Celeste nodded.
The agent pressed play.
Daniel's voice filled the room.
"Once the baby arrives, everything becomes much easier.""
Celeste's recorded voice asked, "What about Evelyn?""
Daniel answered:
"She won't be a problem.""
"You're sure?""
"I've already arranged the paperwork. If anything goes wrong, the trust passes under the temporary authority clause.""
"And if nothing goes wrong?""
A pause.
Then Daniel laughed.
"Then we make sure she signs the revised version.""
Celeste's voice became quieter.
"Daniel, I don't like this.""
"Don't start.""
"What if she finds out?""
"She won't.""
A second pause.
Then Daniel said something that made my blood run cold.
"By the time she realizes what I've done, the child will already be under my control.""
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Agent Collins.
"Can you stop him?""
She held my gaze.
"We will examine the recording and pursue any appropriate legal action. But I need you to understand something. We are not going to rush an investigation based on one recording.""
I nodded.
I didn't want promises.
I wanted my daughter safe.
Celeste lowered her head.
"I'm sorry.""
I looked at her.
"Why did you come to the baby shower?""
She began crying harder.
"Daniel told me he wanted to make an announcement. He said you already knew about us and that everything was arranged.""
I stared at her.
"You laughed when I fell.""
She covered her mouth.
"I know.""
"You told me I'd lost everything.""
"I know.""
"You stood beside him while he humiliated me.""
"I know.""
I looked away.
"Then don't ask me to forgive you.""
She nodded slowly.
"I won't.""
Agent Collins collected the recording.
As Celeste stood to leave, she turned back.
"There's one more thing.""
I looked at her.
"Daniel has another copy of the paperwork.""
"Where?""
"At the Ashford estate.""
She hesitated.
"Inside his father's private study.""
Claire frowned.
"How do you know?""
"Because I helped him move it.""
Agent Collins immediately made a note.
"Thank you. We'll follow up through the appropriate channels.""
Celeste walked out.
I watched the door close.
Then I turned toward Claire.
"Do you believe her?""
Claire looked at the recorder in Agent Collins's hands.
"I believe we need to take everything she said seriously.""
My phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number appeared.
*Daniel knows Celeste spoke to the FBI. He is leaving the estate.*
Another message followed.
*He is looking for you.*
I looked at Agent Collins.
She read the messages.
Her expression hardened.
"Where did you get these?""
"I don't know.""
She stood.
"Then we'd better find out.""
Before she could say anything else, my phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered without speaking.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
"Evelyn, sweetheart.""
I felt sick hearing him call me that.
"What?""
"I heard you've been having visitors.""
I said nothing.
He continued.
"People are telling stories. Lies. I need you to come home.""
"I'm not coming anywhere.""
A pause.
Then his voice dropped.
"You need to listen carefully. There are things about your father you don't know.""
I stared at the silver watch.
"What things?""
He gave a quiet laugh.
"Things that might make you reconsider everything you've been told.""
"Are you threatening me?""
"No, Evelyn.""
His voice became almost tender.
"I'm giving you one last chance to hear the truth from your husband.""
Then he whispered:
"Ask Claire what happened to your mother.""
The call ended.
I turned toward Claire.
Her face had gone completely pale.
"Claire?""
She didn't move.
I gripped the phone.
"What happened to my mother?""
May you like
Claire closed her eyes.
And when she finally opened them, I knew the next secret would hurt more than anything Daniel had done.
