Chapter 4: The Name Inside the Folder
"PHASE TWO — AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.""
I read the words twice.
The folder was in the hands of a tall FBI agent standing beside Victor Ashford. He had a small scar beneath his left eyebrow and an expression that revealed absolutely nothing.
But I recognized the handwriting on the note.
It belonged to someone I hadn't seen in eleven years.
Someone who had once promised my father that the truth would never disappear, no matter how much money was spent burying it.
"Agent?"" I called.
The man looked toward me.
"Ma'am, please remain where you are.""
"I need to know who authorized that second phase.""
His eyes narrowed slightly.
"That's not something we can discuss here.""
Victor suddenly laughed.
It was a strange, broken sound.
"Of course," he muttered.
"Of course, you wouldn't tell her.""
Margaret grabbed his arm.
"Victor, stop talking.""
He turned toward her.
"Do you understand what's happening?""
"Not particularly, because nobody is explaining anything!""
"Then perhaps you should have asked more questions during the last twenty years.""
Margaret's face went white.
Daniel stepped between them.
"Dad, what is he talking about?""
Victor looked at his son.
For a moment, I thought he might answer.
Instead, he whispered, "You were never supposed to know.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Know what?""
The lead agent interrupted.
"Mr. Ashford, I need you to cooperate. Please come with us.""
Victor straightened his jacket.
"Do you have a warrant?""
"Yes, sir.""
"Then I assume you have read the documents carefully.""
"We have.""
"All of them?""
The agent didn't respond.
Victor looked toward the folder.
Then he looked at me.
And his expression became almost pleading.
"Evelyn, tell them.""
I frowned.
"Tell them what?""
"That you don't understand the whole picture.""
I took a breath.
"You're right. I don't understand why you thought you could get away with it.""
His jaw tightened.
"You have no idea what you're interfering with.""
"Then perhaps you should explain.""
He opened his mouth.
The agent stepped closer.
"Sir, this conversation is over.""
Two agents escorted Victor toward the ballroom doors.
Margaret followed immediately.
"You're making a terrible mistake! My husband has never committed a crime in his life!""
An agent turned.
"Ma'am, you need to stay here.""
"Don't you dare tell me what to do!""
Her voice echoed through the ballroom.
Then she noticed the guests watching.
Her expression changed.
She lowered her voice.
"Please. We can resolve this privately.""
The agent didn't even blink.
"This isn't a private matter.""
For once, Margaret Ashford had no answer.
Daniel stood motionless beside the cake.
Celeste clung to his arm.
"Daniel, do something.""
He looked at her.
"What do you want me to do?""
"Call your lawyers!""
"I am trying!""
He pulled out his phone.
His fingers trembled as he dialed.
"Richard? It's Daniel. I need you at the Ashford estate immediately.""
He listened.
"What do you mean you're unavailable?""
Another pause.
"Richard, my father is being detained by federal agents!""
His face changed.
"What?""
He looked toward the ballroom doors.
Then back at his phone.
"Who told you that?""
Silence.
"Richard?""
The call ended.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Celeste squeezed his arm.
"What happened?""
He swallowed.
"He hung up.""
"Call someone else.""
Daniel dialed another number.
Then another.
Each call seemed to make him more frightened.
Finally, he looked at me.
"You did this.""
I didn't answer.
He approached.
"Who have you been talking to?""
"Daniel, step away from me.""
"Answer the question!""
An agent immediately moved between us.
"Sir, stay back.""
Daniel pointed at me.
"She's my wife!""
The agent looked at him.
"Then you should be particularly concerned about her safety.""
Daniel fell silent.
I placed a hand against my stomach.
The pain in my lower back had become sharper, and I could feel my heartbeat in my throat.
A female agent approached me.
"Mrs. Ashford?""
I nodded.
"My name is Special Agent Rachel Collins. Are you injured?""
"I don't think so.""
"Did you fall earlier?""
I looked toward the broken vase.
"Yes. My husband pushed me.""
Her expression tightened.
"Have you been experiencing any abdominal pain?""
"A little.""
"Then I would strongly recommend medical evaluation. We'll arrange assistance.""
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
"She's fine. She's always dramatic.""
Agent Collins turned toward him.
"Sir, I wasn't asking you.""
His mouth closed.
She looked back at me.
"Would you like an ambulance?""
I nodded.
"Yes, please.""
For the first time since entering the ballroom, I allowed myself to feel frightened.
Not for the investigation.
Not for the Ashfords.
For my daughter.
Twenty minutes later, the paramedics arrived.
As they helped me toward the exit, Margaret called after me.
"Evelyn!""
I stopped.
She approached, her heels clicking against the floor.
Her face was pale, but her voice remained controlled.
"Whatever you think you're doing, you need to consider the consequences for this family.""
I stared at her.
"Which family?""
She frowned.
"What?""
"The family you keep talking about. The one where your son can bring his mistress to his pregnant wife's baby shower. The one where a woman gets shoved and everyone tells her to be quiet.""
Margaret's lips tightened.
"Don't be childish.""
I shook my head.
"I'm finished being quiet.""
She looked at my stomach.
"That child is an Ashford.""
I looked down too.
"She's my daughter first.""
Then I walked away.
Behind me, I heard Margaret whisper something to Daniel.
I couldn't make out every word.
But I heard the last sentence.
"Find out what she knows about your grandfather.""
I stopped.
My grandfather?
I turned around.
Margaret had already looked away.
Daniel was staring at her.
And for the first time, I wondered whether the secret inside that folder had nothing to do with the investigation I thought I understood.
The ambulance doors closed.
As we pulled away, I looked through the rear window.
The ballroom was still visible.
White flowers.
Gold balloons.
A beautiful cake.
And a family that had finally begun to understand that money could not buy silence forever.
My phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number appeared.
*YOU WERE NEVER THE TARGET, EVELYN. YOUR FATHER WAS.*
I read it again.
Then another message arrived.
*ASK ABOUT THE ORIGINAL ASHFORD TRUST.*
My blood ran cold.
Because the original Ashford trust was something my father had warned me never to discuss.
And I suddenly understood why Victor had looked so terrified when he saw my watch.
May you like
He wasn't afraid of losing his fortune.
He was afraid of what would happen if I discovered who actually owned it.
