Chapter 3: One Minute Until Everything Changed
"Why are you smiling?""
Daniel's voice came from behind me.
I lowered my wrist.
He stood with Celeste beside him.
Margaret was a few feet away, speaking to the photographer.
The guests were beginning to gather around the cake.
Daniel looked at my face as though he were trying to identify a problem.
"What's funny?""
I looked at him.
"Nothing.""
"Then stop smiling.""
Celeste tilted her head.
"Daniel, leave her alone. She's clearly having some sort of breakdown.""
Margaret approached.
"What's going on now?""
Daniel pointed toward me.
"She's been sitting here checking her watch every thirty seconds.""
Margaret frowned.
"Honestly, Evelyn. This is a baby shower, not a courtroom.""
I looked at her.
"You're right.""
She seemed surprised by my agreement.
"Then perhaps we can finally move on.""
"Of course.""
Celeste smiled.
"Wonderful. Maybe now we can have a photograph without all this unpleasantness.""
I stood slowly.
My lower back was aching, and my daughter pressed against my ribs.
I placed one hand on the table for support.
Daniel reached toward me.
"Don't fall. I don't need another scene.""
I moved away from his hand.
"Don't touch me.""
He scoffed.
"You're impossible.""
I looked at him for a long moment.
Then I looked at Celeste.
She was smiling again.
"You know," she said, "I actually feel sorry for you.""
I said nothing.
"You spent five years believing you were going to be the mother of the next Ashford heir. And now look at you.""
She glanced down at my stomach.
"You're still carrying a child, but that doesn't mean you'll have a place in this family.""
Margaret nodded.
"Celeste, that's enough.""
But her tone carried no real warning.
It sounded more like an invitation to continue politely.
Celeste touched Daniel's arm.
"She needs to understand.""
Daniel looked at me.
"She's right.""
I blinked.
"About what?""
"About your place in this family.""
He stepped closer.
"You have a roof over your head because of my family. You have access to things most people could never afford. And you still think you can dictate how I live?""
I stared at him.
"Is that what you think?""
"Yes.""
"That I stayed because I needed your money?""
He gave a short laugh.
"Let's not pretend you didn't enjoy the lifestyle.""
I looked around the ballroom.
The imported flowers.
The crystal chandeliers.
The gold-rimmed plates.
The expensive decorations.
All of it paid for by a family whose financial records were now being examined by people who did not care how many buildings carried the Ashford name.
I looked back at him.
"Daniel, do you remember what you promised me on our wedding day?""
He sighed.
"Not this again.""
"You said you would never make me feel unsafe.""
He looked toward the ceiling.
"Can we stop with the emotional speeches?""
"You said our home would always be a place where I could trust you.""
"People change.""
"You said you wanted a family.""
"I do.""
I glanced at Celeste.
"Apparently, several.""
Celeste's smile disappeared.
"Watch your tone.""
I almost laughed.
It was remarkable.
The woman who had entered my marriage without shame was now demanding respect.
"You're right," I said.
"I should be careful.""
Daniel folded his arms.
"Finally.""
I looked down at my watch.
The second hand moved.
Forty seconds.
Thirty-nine.
Thirty-eight.
Then I lifted my head.
"How much do you know about your father's business, Daniel?""
He frowned.
"What?""
"His investments. His private accounts. The companies he controls.""
Daniel glanced at Margaret.
"Why are you asking me that?""
"Because you spend a lot of time talking about how powerful your family is.""
I paused.
"Have you ever asked where all that power comes from?""
Margaret's face hardened.
"That is none of your concern.""
"Interesting.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Listen, Evelyn. I don't know what game you're playing, but I'm finished entertaining it.""
"Good.""
"Good?""
"Yes.""
He shook his head.
"You think you're clever.""
"No.""
I touched the silver watch.
"I think I'm on time.""
Celeste burst into laughter.
"Oh, my God. She's actually lost it.""
Margaret turned toward the guests.
"Everyone, please gather around. We're going to cut the cake.""
The photographer raised his camera.
Daniel placed his hand on Celeste's waist.
"Come on, sweetheart.""
She leaned into him.
"Shouldn't Evelyn be in the picture?""
Daniel glanced at me.
"She can take it.""
A few guests exchanged uncomfortable looks.
I didn't react.
Instead, I stepped toward the center of the ballroom.
My heels made soft sounds against the marble.
Daniel watched me approach.
"What now?""
I stopped beside him.
"One photograph.""
He rolled his eyes.
"Fine. Make it quick.""
I looked at the photographer.
"Would you mind taking one with everyone in it?""
The photographer nodded uncertainly.
"Of course, ma'am.""
I turned toward the room.
"Could I have everyone's attention for just a moment?""
The conversations slowly faded.
Margaret looked irritated.
"Evelyn, please don't start again.""
"I won't.""
I raised my left wrist.
The silver watch caught the chandelier light.
Daniel stared at it.
"Seriously?""
I looked directly at him.
"Do you know what time it is?""
He laughed.
"Yes. It's almost two.""
"Exactly.""
I turned my wrist so the face was visible to the people nearest me.
The tiny hands pointed to 1:59.
Celeste folded her arms.
"Is this supposed to mean something?""
I looked at her.
"You said I've lost everything.""
She smiled.
"Have you not?""
I glanced at Daniel.
Then Margaret.
Then Victor, who stood near the windows, now holding his phone so tightly that his knuckles had turned white.
I looked back at Celeste.
"No.""
My voice was calm.
"Not everything.""
She frowned.
I continued.
"Not yet.""
Daniel's smile vanished.
"What are you talking about?""
I took one breath.
"Just wait one minute.""
Silence.
For the first time that afternoon, nobody laughed.
Daniel looked at my watch.
Then at my face.
"You're threatening me?""
"No.""
"Then what is this?""
I didn't answer.
Because the second hand was moving.
Twenty seconds.
Nineteen.
Eighteen.
Victor began walking toward us.
"Daniel," he said sharply.
Daniel turned.
"What?""
"Come here.""
"Not now, Dad.""
"Now.""
There was something in Victor's voice that made several guests turn around.
Margaret frowned.
"Victor, what's wrong?""
He ignored her.
"Daniel. We need to leave.""
Daniel laughed nervously.
"Leave? The cake hasn't even been cut.""
"Forget the cake.""
Celeste looked between them.
"What's happening?""
Victor reached for Daniel's arm.
"Get away from the windows.""
Daniel pulled free.
"What is wrong with you?""
Then the ballroom doors opened.
Not gently.
Not with the polite entrance of another invited guest.
They flew open with a force that made the nearest guests jump.
Several men and women in dark suits entered the room.
Their movements were controlled, deliberate, and unmistakably official.
The first agent held up an identification badge.
"Federal Bureau of Investigation!""
The room erupted.
Someone screamed.
A champagne glass hit the floor.
The photographer lowered his camera.
Margaret froze.
Daniel stared at the entrance.
"What the hell is this?""
The lead agent moved forward.
"Nobody move!""
Two agents positioned themselves near the main doors.
Another moved toward the private dining area.
A fourth approached Victor Ashford.
"Victor Ashford?""
Victor's lips parted.
"Yes?""
The agent's voice was firm.
"Sir, stay exactly where you are.""
Victor looked around.
His eyes found Daniel.
Then Margaret.
Then, finally, me.
"No..."" he whispered.
The agent repeated the order.
"Mr. Ashford, I said stay where you are.""
Victor took a small step backward.
His face had gone pale.
"No... this can't be happening!""
Margaret grabbed his sleeve.
"Victor? What is going on?""
He didn't answer.
Daniel stepped forward angrily.
"Excuse me! Do you know who my father is?""
The lead agent turned toward him.
"Sir, step back.""
"I'm Daniel Ashford. My family owns this venue!""
"Step back now.""
Daniel looked toward his father.
Then toward the agents.
Finally, his eyes landed on me.
I was standing beside the decorated cake, one hand resting against my belly, the other holding the silver watch.
His expression changed.
"You.""
I didn't move.
"What did you do?""
I looked at him.
"Nothing you didn't give us reason to investigate.""
He stared at me.
"Who are these people?""
Before I could answer, the lead agent spoke again.
"Everyone remain calm. We are here regarding an active federal investigation. We need everyone to follow instructions.""
The words seemed to drain the air from the room.
Celeste grabbed Daniel's arm.
"Daniel, tell them to leave.""
He didn't respond.
Margaret's voice rose.
"This is a private family event! You cannot simply walk in here!""
An agent approached her.
"Ma'am, please step aside.""
She pulled her arm away.
"Do you have any idea who you're speaking to?""
"Yes, ma'am. Now step aside.""
Victor was still staring at me.
His expression was no longer angry.
It was something worse.
Recognition.
He had finally understood that the clock had been ticking long before the agents entered the ballroom.
And he had failed to stop it.
Daniel took another step toward me.
"You planned this.""
I looked at him.
He lowered his voice.
"You used our baby shower?""
I glanced at my daughter.
"No, Daniel. You did that yourself.""
His face twisted.
"You ruined my family!""
For the first time that afternoon, I felt the full weight of everything I had been holding inside.
The nights I had cried alone.
The appointments I had attended without him.
The documents I had reviewed while he slept.
The fear that had followed me every time I realized how deeply his family's influence reached.
I wanted to shout.
I wanted to tell him everything.
But I didn't.
I simply looked at the man I had once promised to love forever.
And said:
"You should have thought about your family before you pushed its future out of your way.""
An agent moved between us.
"Sir, step away from her.""
Daniel stopped.
Celeste began crying.
Margaret clutched her pearls.
And Victor Ashford whispered something I could barely hear.
"Evelyn...""
I turned.
He looked at my watch.
Then at me.
"Who did you tell?""
I held his gaze.
"The truth.""
He shook his head.
"No. You don't understand. If they know about—"
The lead agent interrupted him.
"Mr. Ashford. Do not say another word.""
Two agents moved closer.
The ballroom had become completely silent.
I felt a small kick beneath my ribs.
I placed my palm against my stomach.
"It's okay, sweetheart," I whispered.
Then I looked at the clock above the ballroom doors.
2:00 p.m.
Exactly one minute.
I had told them to wait one minute.
And they had.
But as the agents surrounded Victor, I noticed something that made my stomach tighten.
One of them was holding a folder.
On the front was a name I recognized.
Not Daniel's.
Not Margaret's.
Not even Victor's.
It was the name of the person who had first helped me understand what was really happening inside the Ashford empire.
And beneath that name was a handwritten note.
*PHASE TWO — AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.*
I stared at it.
Because I had never been told there would be a second phase.
May you like
And judging by the look on Victor's face...
Neither had he.
