Chapter 6: The Night My Father Died
"Claire.""
She didn't answer.
I held up my phone.
"Margaret says I should ask you what happened the night my father died.""
Claire slowly sat down.
For several seconds, the only sound in the room was the steady rhythm of the heart monitor.
Then she spoke.
"Your father died from complications following a sudden cardiac event.""
"I know what the death certificate says.""
"Then why are you asking?""
"Because Margaret wouldn't have sent that message unless she wanted me to question something.""
Claire looked down at her hands.
"Your father was under considerable stress during the final months of his life.""
"Because of Victor?""
"Partly.""
"Was he afraid?""
Claire didn't answer immediately.
Finally, she said, "He was worried about you.""
I swallowed.
"Did Victor threaten him?""
Claire removed her glasses.
"Evelyn, I don't want you to jump to conclusions.""
"Then tell me what happened.""
She opened the folder again and removed a handwritten letter.
"This was written three days before your father died.""
I recognized the envelope.
It was addressed to me.
But the handwriting was shaky.
My father's usual neat lettering had become uneven, as though he had been writing in a hurry.
Claire handed it over.
I unfolded the paper.
My darling Evelyn,
If you're reading this, then something has happened that I hoped you would never have to face.
I want you to know that the decisions I made were never about money. They were about protecting the people I loved.
There are things I cannot explain in this letter. Not because I don't trust you, but because I know what happens when the wrong people discover the truth.
Keep the silver watch.
When the time comes, don't be afraid to ask for help.
And whatever happens, remember that you were never responsible for the choices made by other people.
I love you.
Dad.
My vision blurred.
I pressed the letter against my chest.
"Why didn't I receive this?""
Claire looked devastated.
"Because I received instructions to hold it until the conditions in your father's agreement were met.""
"What conditions?""
"Your marriage to an Ashford. A documented attempt to interfere with your beneficial interest. And evidence that the original trust was being misused.""
I stared at her.
"Those conditions have all happened.""
"Yes.""
"Then why now?""
"Because the investigation has reached a stage where the original trust can finally be examined without compromising the evidence.""
I looked at the silver watch.
"Is that why you knew about today?""
Claire nodded.
"Your father had the watch modified.""
I frowned.
"What?""
"Inside the casing is a small engraved reference number. It connects to the original trust documents and the independent records held by the trustees.""
I turned my wrist.
"You're telling me this watch is evidence?""
"Part of it.""
I stared at the scratched silver face.
All these years, I had worn it because it reminded me of my father.
I had never imagined it carried something more important.
"Did Daniel know?""
"No. At least, we have no evidence that he did.""
I leaned back.
"Then why was Victor so frightened when he saw it?""
Claire's expression became serious.
"Because Victor knew your father had retained an original key to the trust's independent verification system.""
I looked down.
"And the key is in the watch?""
"Not exactly. The reference number allows the authorized trustees to verify the sealed records. Your father designed it so that nobody could alter the ownership documents without leaving evidence.""
I shook my head.
"He really thought of everything.""
"He thought of you.""
That broke me.
For years, I had wondered why my father had never explained the full story.
I had occasionally felt that he hadn't trusted me enough.
Now I understood.
He had wanted me to have a normal life.
He had wanted me to fall in love without worrying about corporate fraud, hidden assets, and dangerous people.
He had wanted me to be a daughter.
Not a witness.
Not a beneficiary.
Not a target.
I wiped my cheeks.
"What happened the night he died?""
Claire looked toward the door.
Then she lowered her voice.
"There was a meeting.""
"With whom?""
"Victor.""
My chest tightened.
"What?""
"Your father met Victor at a private office downtown. They argued about the trust.""
"How do you know?""
"Your father called me afterward.""
"What did he say?""
Claire hesitated.
"He told me that Victor had made a threat.""
I gripped the bedsheet.
"What threat?""
"He said that if your father continued trying to restore the original ownership structure, certain people would make sure he never got the opportunity.""
I felt sick.
"And then my father died?""
"Three days later.""
I looked at her.
"Why wasn't this investigated?""
"It was. But there wasn't enough evidence to establish wrongdoing.""
I stared at the ceiling.
The room suddenly felt unbearably cold.
"Do you think Victor had something to do with his death?""
Claire answered carefully.
"I think the circumstances deserve a proper review. But I will not accuse anyone without evidence.""
I nodded.
That was fair.
I didn't want another accusation.
I wanted the truth.
An hour later, a detective from the hospital's security office came to speak with me.
He introduced himself as Detective Harris.
He was working alongside the federal team to document the incident at the baby shower.
"Evelyn, I understand there was a physical confrontation.""
"Yes.""
"Can you describe what happened?""
I told him.
I described Daniel's words.
The shove.
The broken vase.
The pain in my back.
I described the way Margaret had told everyone not to exaggerate.
And I described Celeste laughing while I struggled to stand.
Detective Harris wrote everything down.
"Did anyone witness the incident?""
"Almost everyone.""
He nodded.
"Several guests have already provided statements. The venue also has security cameras.""
I looked at him.
"Will the footage be preserved?""
"Yes.""
He closed his notebook.
"There's one more thing. A member of the Ashford family has contacted our office.""
I frowned.
"Who?""
"Margaret.""
I almost laughed.
"What does she want?""
"She claims you took confidential family property.""
I stared at him.
"That's ridiculous.""
"She specifically mentioned a silver watch.""
My eyes dropped to my wrist.
Detective Harris noticed.
"Is this the watch?""
"Yes. It belonged to my father.""
"Does she have any legal claim to it?""
"None that I know of.""
He nodded.
"We'll document that.""
After he left, I looked at Claire.
"How did Margaret know?""
Claire closed the folder.
"Victor must have told her something.""
"Then she knows about the trust.""
"She knows enough to be dangerous.""
I looked at my phone.
A new message had arrived.
This time, it was from Celeste.
*You should be ashamed of yourself. Daniel is devastated.*
I stared at it.
Another message appeared.
*You have no idea what you've done to our child.*
I almost put the phone down.
Then I noticed the next message.
*By the way, you should ask Daniel why he wanted your baby to be born before the end of the month.*
My blood turned cold.
I read it again.
Then I looked at Claire.
"Why would she say that?""
Claire took the phone and read the message.
Her expression became unreadable.
"Did Daniel ever discuss changing your delivery arrangements?""
"No.""
"Did he ever ask you to sign medical documents?""
I thought carefully.
"Two months ago, he brought home some paperwork. He said it was insurance authorization.""
Claire looked up sharply.
"Did you sign it?""
"I don't think so.""
"Where is it?""
"I left it in his office.""
Claire stood.
"Do not contact him.""
"Why?""
"Because I want those documents examined.""
I felt a chill move down my spine.
"What do you think they are?""
"I don't know yet.""
My phone rang.
Daniel.
I stared at the screen.
Claire shook her head.
"Don't answer.""
But I did.
"Hello?""
His voice came through immediately.
"Evelyn.""
He sounded exhausted.
"What do you want?""
"We need to talk.""
"We've talked enough.""
"Please. Just listen.""
I said nothing.
He lowered his voice.
"Mom told me about the watch.""
I looked at Claire.
Daniel continued.
"She said Dad is in serious trouble because of something you found.""
"I didn't find anything. I reported what I knew.""
"Then tell me what you know.""
"No.""
"You're my wife.""
I closed my eyes.
"That didn't seem to matter when you brought Celeste to our baby shower.""
"Evelyn, that's not what this is about.""
"Then what is it about?""
There was a pause.
Then he said something that made my entire body go cold.
"Before our daughter is born, I need you to sign one document.""
I sat upright.
"What document?""
"The same one I gave you before.""
"The insurance paperwork?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"It's just a family authorization.""
I stared at Claire.
She was already writing something down.
"Daniel, what happens if I refuse?""
His voice hardened.
"Then you're going to make everything much more difficult.""
I looked at the hospital monitor.
My daughter's heartbeat continued steadily.
"Daniel?""
"What?""
"You pushed me today.""
He sighed.
"We've already discussed that.""
"No. We haven't.""
"Evelyn—"
"You pushed the woman carrying your child, and now you're calling to ask her to sign something.""
His breathing changed.
"Don't turn this into something ugly.""
I looked down at my silver watch.
Then I said the one thing he clearly hadn't expected.
"I think you should have your lawyer read that document before you ask me again.""
Silence.
Then Daniel whispered:
"Who told you?""
I froze.
"Who told me what?""
He ended the call.
I slowly lowered the phone.
Claire was staring at me.
"What did he mean?""
"I don't know.""
But I was beginning to suspect that Celeste's message had not been a random act of cruelty.
There was something about the timing of my daughter's birth.
Something Daniel wanted completed before she arrived.
And when Claire opened the original trust folder again, a folded document slipped out.
She picked it up.
Read the first paragraph.
Then looked at me with an expression I would never forget.
"Evelyn...""
"What?""
She turned the document around.
At the bottom was Daniel's signature.
And beside it was a clause concerning the unborn child.
*IF THE PRIMARY BENEFICIARY IS UNABLE TO EXERCISE HER LEGAL RIGHTS, TEMPORARY CONTROL OF THE INHERITED ASSETS SHALL PASS TO THE CHILD'S FATHER.*
I stared at the words.
Then I looked at Claire.
"Unable to exercise her rights?""
Claire nodded slowly.
"That's what it says.""
My hand moved instinctively to my stomach.
Daniel hadn't just been trying to replace me.
He might have been trying to take control of everything my father had left me.
And suddenly, Celeste's words at the baby shower made a terrible kind of sense.
You've lost everything.
I looked at the document again.
Then I whispered:
"How long has my husband been planning this?""
Claire turned to the next page.
And there, beneath another signature, was a date.
May you like
It was dated six months before Daniel had ever told me he was having an affair.
