Chapter 5: The Room Beneath Eleanor House

The following morning, Nia stood outside the original Eleanor House headquarters.

The building was an elegant brick structure on a quiet street lined with old trees.

Its windows were tall and narrow, and the entrance still carried the original brass lettering:

*ELEANOR HOUSE — ESTABLISHED BY ELEANOR BENNETT.*

Nia had seen photographs of the building in her mother's sketchbooks.

But standing in front of it felt different.

Margaret waited beside her.

"Your mother loved this place," she said.

"Why did she leave it?""

"She didn't. She simply stopped working here when her illness became too difficult.""

Margaret unlocked the door.

Inside, the studio looked almost untouched.

Dress forms stood near the windows.

Old sewing machines lined one wall.

A collection of fabric samples hung from wooden racks.

Nia walked slowly through the room.

"This is where she started?""

Margaret smiled.

"Right there.""

She pointed toward a small wooden desk.

"Your mother rented this space when she was twenty-four. She had almost no money. Sometimes she worked through the night because she couldn't afford to hire another seamstress.""

Nia ran her fingers over the desk.

"She never told me that.""

"She didn't want you to feel obligated to follow her path.""

Margaret led her toward a staircase at the back.

"Come. There's something you need to see.""

They descended into a basement.

At the bottom was a steel door with a small brass lock.

Margaret handed Nia the gold key.

"Your mother gave this to me shortly before she died.""

Nia inserted it.

The lock clicked.

The door opened.

Inside was a private archive.

Shelves filled the room from floor to ceiling. There were boxes of old photographs, leather-bound journals, original contracts, fabric samples, and hundreds of sketches.

At the center stood a large wooden table.

On it rested a black leather folder.

Nia approached.

A handwritten label was attached to the front.

*FOR NIA. WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT.*

She opened it.

The first page contained a photograph of Eleanor standing beside a young Richard.

They were smiling.

Behind them was the same mansion where Nia had grown up.

The next photograph showed Eleanor holding a set of documents.

Then came a series of letters.

Nia picked up the first.

It was addressed to Richard.

Richard,

I have reviewed the proposed transfer documents. I will not sign them.

Eleanor House is my company. The money I earned and the assets I built are not available for you to use as security for your business ventures.

I love you, but I will not allow our daughter's future to become collateral for your ambitions.

Nia looked at Margaret.

"What's this about?""

Margaret sighed.

"Your father was having financial difficulties long before Vanessa entered your lives.""

Nia read the letter again.

"Mom refused to give him money?""

"She refused to let him use her company to cover his debts.""

"Why?""

"Because Richard wanted to borrow against assets that belonged to Eleanor House. He believed that marriage gave him more authority than it actually did.""

Nia felt sick.

"Did he threaten her?""

Margaret didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she opened another box.

Inside were copies of bank statements and company correspondence.

"Your mother discovered that money had been transferred without authorization from one of the company's accounts.""

Nia stared.

"How much?""

Margaret pointed to the documents.

"Several hundred thousand dollars over a period of months.""

"Who took it?""

Margaret looked directly at her.

"Richard.""

Nia sat down.

The room seemed suddenly cold.

"Are you sure?""

"Your mother hired independent accountants. They traced the transfers to a business account controlled by your father.""

"Did she report him?""

"No. She wanted him to repay the money and leave the company alone.""

Nia lowered her eyes.

"She protected him.""

"She protected you, too. She didn't want your childhood destroyed by a public scandal.""

Nia turned another page.

There was a letter dated two months before Eleanor's death.

I have learned that Vanessa has been asking questions about the company's ownership structure.

She appears to believe that Richard's marriage to me gives him access to my private assets.

I am concerned about her intentions.

Nia's fingers tightened.

"Mom knew Vanessa was dangerous.""

Margaret nodded.

"She did.""

"Why didn't anyone tell me?""

"Because you were twelve years old.""

Nia looked at the final document.

It was a handwritten list of names.

Beside each name was a note.

Some were employees.

Some were lawyers.

One name had been circled in red ink.

*Vanessa Cole.*

Beneath it, Eleanor had written:

Do not allow her to control the archive.

Nia stared at the words.

"What's in the archive that Vanessa wants?""

Margaret walked toward the back wall.

There was a second cabinet.

She unlocked it using a small combination.

Inside sat a sealed envelope and a thick black ledger.

Margaret removed the ledger.

"This contains the original records of Eleanor House, including the first ownership agreements and the private contracts connected to the company's founding.""

Nia opened it.

On the first page was a signature.

Eleanor Bennett.

On the second page was another.

Thomas Harrington.

And on the third was a name Nia had never expected to see.

*Vanessa Cole.*

Nia looked up.

"Why is her name here?""

Margaret closed her eyes.

"Because before Vanessa married your father, she worked for your mother.""

Nia stared.

"What?""

"She was a junior administrative assistant. Eleanor gave her a job when she was struggling financially.""

Nia looked at the signature again.

"Then why did Mom circle her name?""

Margaret took a breath.

"Because Vanessa was dismissed after your mother discovered that she had been copying confidential company information.""

Nia felt her stomach twist.

"She was stealing?""

"Your mother believed she was preparing to sell information to a competitor. She was never able to establish exactly how much damage had been done.""

Nia slowly closed the ledger.

"Then Vanessa married my father knowing everything about Mom's company?""

Margaret nodded.

"That is what Eleanor feared.""

At the mansion, Vanessa was pacing across the living room.

Brianna sat on the sofa, scrolling through photographs from the gala.

Every social media platform seemed to be showing Nia's runway appearance.

One headline read:

*THE HIDDEN HEIRESS: NIA BENNETT TAKES CONTROL OF HER MOTHER'S FASHION EMPIRE.*

Another read:

*FROM FAMILY REJECTION TO COUTURE ROYALTY.*

Brianna threw her phone onto the cushion.

"I can't believe this!""

Vanessa poured herself a glass of water.

"Lower your voice.""

"Everyone is talking about her! My friends are asking whether she's really worth hundreds of millions.""

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

"She doesn't know what she's doing.""

"She owns Eleanor House, Mom!""

"I know what she owns!""

Richard entered carrying a stack of papers.

"We need to talk.""

Vanessa turned.

"What now?""

"I've been contacted by Harrington's office.""

Her expression changed.

"What did they say?""

"They want to review the transfer of several assets.""

"Which assets?""

Richard placed the papers on the table.

"The jewelry. Some paintings. A property Eleanor owned before we married.""

Vanessa stared.

"They can't take those things.""

"Apparently, they can.""

She stepped closer.

"Richard, you told me everything had been transferred.""

"I thought it had!""

"You said Eleanor's will was settled!""

"It was never settled the way you thought!""

Vanessa slapped the table.

"Don't you dare put this on me!""

Brianna stood.

"Can you two stop shouting?""

Vanessa ignored her.

She turned to Richard.

"What about the documents we signed?""

Richard looked confused.

"What documents?""

"The agreement concerning the company.""

He froze.

Then he lowered his voice.

"Where did you get that?""

Vanessa stared at him.

"From your office.""

Richard grabbed her arm.

"Did you take those papers?""

"Let go!""

He released her.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Richard said something that made Brianna step backward.

"If Nia finds the original records, we're finished.""

Vanessa's face lost its color.

"She already has them.""

Richard looked at her.

"How do you know?""

"Because Margaret Ellis was at the gala.""

Richard sank into a chair.

He remembered the old assistant.

He remembered the basement archive.

He remembered the day Eleanor had told him that the key would never belong to him.

Vanessa walked to the window.

"We need to get to Nia before she reads everything.""

That afternoon, Nia sat in Thomas Harrington's office.

The black ledger rested on the table.

Thomas examined the documents carefully.

His expression grew more serious with every page.

"Your mother preserved everything," he said.

"Did she know Vanessa was involved in the theft?""

"She suspected that Vanessa had attempted to obtain confidential information. The evidence was incomplete at the time.""

Nia leaned forward.

"What does this agreement mean?""

Thomas turned the document around.

It was an agreement Richard and Vanessa had signed years earlier.

The document showed that Richard had attempted to pledge assets belonging to Eleanor's estate as security for a private business loan.

Vanessa had signed as a witness.

But beneath her signature was another statement.

She had acknowledged receiving copies of Eleanor's confidential business records.

Thomas removed his glasses.

"This is significant.""

"Can it be used against them?""

"It may support further investigation. We will need to verify the financial records and determine whether any laws were violated.""

Nia looked at the ledger.

"Did my mother know they would eventually try to take everything?""

Thomas nodded slowly.

"She was concerned.""

Nia's eyes filled.

"She must have been so lonely.""

Thomas closed the folder.

"She had Margaret. She had a number of loyal employees. And she had you.""

Nia wiped her eyes.

Then her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice came through.

"Nia, sweetheart. It's Vanessa.""

Nia said nothing.

"I think we've had a terrible misunderstanding.""

Nia looked at Thomas.

Vanessa continued.

"Your father and I would love to have dinner with you. Just the three of us. We can talk about the past and put all this unpleasantness behind us.""

Nia almost laughed.

"Why?""

"Because we're family.""

Nia glanced at the ledger.

"Is that what you called me when you threw me out?""

Vanessa's voice softened.

"Darling, I was upset. I said things I didn't mean.""

"You said I had nothing left.""

"I was angry.""

"You took my mother's necklace.""

"That necklace was a misunderstanding.""

Nia looked at Thomas.

He silently shook his head.

Vanessa continued.

"Please. Come home tonight. Your father misses you.""

Nia closed her eyes.

Then she answered.

"I'll come.""

Thomas looked surprised.

Vanessa immediately brightened.

"Wonderful! I'll prepare your favorite dinner.""

Nia ended the call.

Thomas leaned forward.

"Are you certain?""

Nia looked at the documents.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

She carefully closed the black ledger.

"Because I want to hear what they say when they think I still know nothing.""

At seven o'clock, Nia arrived at the mansion.

The front doors opened before she could knock.

Vanessa stood inside wearing an elegant cream dress.

Her smile was almost convincing.

"Nia! Come in, sweetheart.""

Nia stepped across the marble floor.

The same floor where she had stood crying days earlier.

The same staircase.

The same chandelier.

But this time, she wasn't carrying a suitcase.

Richard waited in the living room.

Brianna stood beside him.

"Hello, Nia," Richard said.

"Hello, Dad.""

Vanessa took her coat.

"Let's sit down.""

On the dining table were expensive dishes, crystal glasses, and a large bouquet of white roses.

Nia looked at the arrangement.

"Mom liked white roses.""

Vanessa smiled awkwardly.

"I remembered.""

They sat.

For several minutes, the conversation remained painfully polite.

Then Richard cleared his throat.

"Nia, I've been thinking about everything.""

She looked at him.

"Have you?""

"I made mistakes.""

"Yes.""

He swallowed.

"I was under a lot of pressure.""

"That doesn't explain why you let Vanessa throw me out.""

Vanessa reached for her hand.

"Darling, let's not reopen old wounds.""

Nia pulled her hand away.

Richard sighed.

"We want to start again.""

"Why?""

Vanessa exchanged a glance with him.

Then she leaned forward.

"Because we believe you should come back to the family.""

Nia looked at her.

"On what condition?""

Vanessa smiled.

"None at all.""

Richard reached for a folder.

"There's just one small matter concerning your inheritance. We would like to help you manage certain assets until you're comfortable.""

Nia stared at the folder.

Then she slowly looked up.

"You want me to sign something?""

Richard hesitated.

"It's just an administrative agreement.""

Nia smiled faintly.

"Interesting.""

She reached into her handbag and removed a folded document.

She placed it on the table.

"Because I brought something too.""

Richard looked down.

His face turned white.

May you like

It was a copy of the original financial ledger.

And the first page contained his signature.
