Chapter 3: The Fortune Behind the Mask

Nia read the document three times.

Then she looked up.

"Why is my father's signature here?""

Thomas Harrington folded his hands.

"Three years ago, Richard Bennett approached our office requesting information about Eleanor's estate.""

"Why?""

"He claimed he was acting on behalf of the family.""

"But he wasn't?""

"Your mother had explicitly prohibited him from making decisions regarding the trust.""

Nia looked down again.

The document contained a declaration that Richard had attempted to obtain authority over Eleanor's business interests.

A second document showed that his request had been rejected.

"Did he know about the company?""

"Yes. He knew some of it. But he never received control.""

Nia's throat tightened.

"Then why did he tell me everything belonged to Vanessa?""

Thomas didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he opened another folder.

"Your mother's estate was structured carefully. She wanted to make certain that you would never be forced to depend on someone who might use money to control you.""

Nia thought about the mansion.

Vanessa's pearls.

Brianna's champagne.

Her father's blue suit.

"Did my mother know they would throw me out?""

Thomas looked at her with quiet sadness.

"She knew that your relationship with your stepmother might become difficult. She also knew your father had become increasingly concerned with maintaining his social position.""

"That's why she made the trust?""

"Partly.""

He turned a page.

"Your mother wanted you to have a choice. She wanted you to become a designer if that was your dream, or pursue another life if it wasn't. The inheritance was never meant to be a chain.""

Nia stared at the paperwork.

"How much?""

Thomas removed his glasses.

"Your mother's estate includes controlling interests in Eleanor House, several commercial properties, investment portfolios, and private assets.""

He paused.

"The current estimated value is approximately four hundred and eighty million dollars.""

Nia stopped breathing for a moment.

"Four hundred and eighty...""

"Million.""

She looked around the room as if expecting someone to tell her it was a mistake.

"That's impossible.""

"It's documented.""

"But why did I never hear about it?""

"Because the trust was private, and your mother instructed us not to disclose the full details until you reached twenty-one.""

Nia rubbed her forehead.

Four hundred and eighty million dollars.

Yesterday, she had been standing outside a mansion wondering where she would sleep.

Now a lawyer was telling her that her mother had left her a fortune.

But the money wasn't what made her eyes fill.

It was the realization that Eleanor had thought about her future long after she was gone.

"She really did leave me something," Nia whispered.

Thomas nodded.

"She left you everything she could.""

He opened the sealed envelope.

Inside was a letter written in Eleanor's handwriting.

Nia recognized it immediately.

Her mother's rounded letters.

The small heart she always drew above the letter i.

Thomas handed it to her.

"She asked that you read this alone.""

Nia unfolded the paper.

My dearest Nia,

If this letter has reached you, then you are old enough to make your own decisions.

There will be people who tell you that you are not enough. Some will use their money to make you feel small. Others will use your love for them as a weapon.

Never confuse being loved with being controlled.

I built my company with a sewing machine, a rented room, and a dream that nobody else believed in.

I want you to remember that the most valuable thing I can leave you is not a number on a bank statement.

It is the freedom to create.

If you choose fashion, make something that makes the world stop and look.

If you choose another path, walk it without apology.

And if anyone ever makes you feel that you have nothing, remember this:

You were never empty-handed.

All my love,

Mom.

Nia pressed the letter against her chest.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

Thomas quietly passed her a tissue.

After a moment, she asked, "What happens now?""

"First, we complete the legal verification. Then we establish your authority over the trust and the company.""

"And my father?""

"Your father has no legal authority over your inheritance.""

"Vanessa?""

"Neither does she.""

Nia nodded slowly.

"Can they take anything from me?""

"Not unless you voluntarily grant them access.""

Thomas leaned forward.

"Miss Bennett, I want you to understand something. The company has been operating under professional management. Your mother appointed a board of directors, and she included detailed succession instructions.""

"Would I have to run it?""

"That decision is yours. But there's another matter.""

He placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Eleanor standing beside a tall woman in a black evening gown.

Behind them was a fashion runway.

"Your mother founded the Eleanor House Emerging Designers Foundation. Every year, it sponsors a major fashion event in this city.""

Nia recognized the gown in the photograph.

It was the same black-and-white design she had been studying in the studio.

"That's the dress from my mother's sketchbook.""

Thomas looked surprised.

"She gave you that design?""

"I found it yesterday.""

He smiled faintly.

"Then perhaps it's time you finished what she started.""

Three days later, Nia returned to the sewing studio.

The gown stood on the mannequin.

She had made a few adjustments, extending the feathered train and adding a delicate row of silver crystals along the back.

She worked late into the evening.

A knock sounded at the door.

Nia turned.

A woman in a charcoal suit stood outside, holding a leather portfolio.

"Miss Bennett?""

"Yes?""

"My name is Celeste Morgan. I'm the creative director of Eleanor House.""

Nia immediately recognized the name from the documents.

"Please, come in.""

Celeste entered and looked around the studio.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she walked toward the gown.

"Good heavens.""

Nia smiled nervously.

"I made it from one of my mother's sketches.""

Celeste moved closer.

She examined the stitching, the crystals, the feather arrangement, and the construction of the train.

"Did you study fashion formally?""

"Not really. My mother taught me.""

Celeste looked at her.

"Your mother taught you all of this?""

"She started when I was little.""

Celeste touched the edge of the skirt.

"Then she taught you well.""

She opened her portfolio.

"The annual Eleanor House Foundation Gala is happening next Saturday. We're presenting a collection honoring the women who shaped the company.""

Nia glanced at the gown.

Celeste followed her gaze.

"I would like you to walk in the opening segment.""

"Me?""

"Yes. Wearing this dress.""

Nia shook her head.

"I've never walked a runway.""

"That can be arranged.""

"I'm not a model.""

"You're the designer's daughter. And from what I'm seeing, you may be more than that.""

Celeste handed her an invitation.

"The event will be attended by international designers, investors, celebrities, and members of the fashion press.""

Nia examined the elegant black card.

At the bottom was a line:

*THE ELEANOR HOUSE LEGACY GALA.*

She looked up.

"Will my family be there?""

Celeste's expression changed slightly.

"Your father and stepmother have been regular guests for several years.""

Nia felt a strange chill.

"Why?""

"Richard Bennett has maintained a business relationship with several of our corporate partners. Vanessa has also been involved in some of the charity events.""

Nia looked at the invitation again.

She imagined Vanessa in her hot pink designer dress.

Brianna in emerald green.

Richard in royal blue.

All three sitting beneath golden chandeliers, smiling as if the world belonged to them.

And then she imagined walking into that ballroom.

Not as the girl they had thrown out.

But as the woman wearing her mother's design.

"I'll do it," Nia said.

Celeste smiled.

"I thought you might.""

Across town, the Bennett mansion was preparing for its own celebration.

Vanessa stood in front of a full-length mirror while Brianna adjusted the straps of her emerald-green dress.

The pearl necklace rested around Vanessa's neck.

"Do you think this is too much?"" Vanessa asked.

Brianna stepped back.

"Mom, you look incredible.""

Richard entered the bedroom, still wearing his royal-blue suit.

"Are we ready?""

Vanessa turned.

"Almost. Did you confirm the invitation?""

Richard nodded.

"The Eleanor House Gala has us on the guest list.""

Brianna smiled.

"Wonderful. I heard some major investors will be there.""

Vanessa picked up a pair of diamond earrings.

"Of course they will. It's one of the most important fashion events of the year.""

Richard loosened his tie.

"We should be careful about what we say tonight.""

Vanessa glanced at him.

"Why?""

"Because I received a call from someone at Eleanor House.""

Her smile faded.

"What did they want?""

"They asked whether I knew where Nia was.""

Brianna laughed.

"Why would anyone care about her?""

Richard looked uncomfortable.

"I don't know.""

Vanessa fastened her earrings.

"She's probably found some little job. Maybe she's working in a clothing shop.""

Brianna grinned.

"Imagine if she showed up at the gala wearing one of her homemade dresses.""

Vanessa laughed.

"She wouldn't dare.""

Richard didn't join them.

Instead, he walked toward the window.

Something about the phone call had bothered him.

The woman from Eleanor House had asked a strange question.

Not where Nia was living.

Not whether she was safe.

She had asked whether Richard had any legal claim over his late wife's estate.

And when he said no, she had thanked him and ended the call.

The following Saturday, the ballroom of the Grand Imperial Hotel glowed beneath enormous golden chandeliers.

Hundreds of guests moved between tables dressed in black and gold.

Camera flashes lit the entrance.

A string orchestra played near the stage.

Vanessa arrived in a hot pink gown, wearing Eleanor's pearl necklace.

Brianna followed in emerald green.

Richard walked beside them in royal blue.

They were greeted by several wealthy guests.

"Vanessa! You look wonderful.""

"Richard, it's been too long.""

Brianna posed for photographs.

Vanessa smiled confidently.

She had spent years building her reputation among the city's wealthy social circles.

Tonight was supposed to be another opportunity to remind everyone of the Bennett family's importance.

They took their seats near the front.

A large screen displayed the words:

*ELEANOR HOUSE: A LEGACY OF COURAGE AND CREATION.*

Vanessa rolled her eyes slightly.

"All this sentimental nonsense," she whispered to Brianna.

Brianna leaned closer.

"At least the champagne is good.""

Richard picked up the program.

He scanned the list of designers.

Then his eyes stopped.

At the bottom was a special announcement.

*OPENING DESIGNER: NIA ELEANOR BENNETT.*

Richard's glass slipped slightly in his hand.

"What?"" he whispered.

Vanessa turned.

"What is it?""

He pointed to the program.

She read the name.

For several seconds, she couldn't speak.

Then she laughed.

"That's impossible.""

Brianna leaned over.

"What's impossible?""

Vanessa shoved the program toward her.

Brianna's smile disappeared.

"Why is her name here?""

Richard stared toward the stage.

"I don't know.""

The lights dimmed.

A voice came over the speakers.

"Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we honor a woman whose vision changed the world of couture. A woman who believed that creativity was the greatest inheritance one generation could leave to the next.""

The audience applauded.

"Please welcome the daughter of Eleanor Bennett, the new guardian of the Eleanor House legacy, and the designer of tonight's opening creation...""

A pause.

Then the name rang through the ballroom.

"Miss Nia Eleanor Bennett!""

The music changed.

A spotlight illuminated the entrance.

And Nia stepped onto the runway.

She wore the dramatic black-and-white couture gown, with silver crystals shimmering beneath the chandeliers.

A half-black, half-white mask covered the upper portion of her face.

Her white feathers swept over one shoulder.

Behind her, the enormous feathered train spread across the runway like the wings of a magnificent bird.

The ballroom fell silent.

Then cameras began flashing.

Nia walked slowly, confidently, her chin lifted.

Vanessa's champagne glass stopped halfway to her lips.

Brianna stared with her mouth open.

Richard stood halfway out of his chair.

The smiles disappeared from all three faces.

Nia reached the center of the runway.

She turned.

The train opened behind her in a breathtaking display of black and white feathers.

A wave of applause swept through the ballroom.

Then Nia stopped directly in front of the Bennett family's table.

She looked at Vanessa.

Then Brianna.

Finally, her gaze settled on her father.

She lifted one hand.

Slowly, she removed her mask.

Vanessa gasped.

"How did you get that fortune?!""

Nia didn't answer immediately.

She simply looked at the pearl necklace resting around Vanessa's throat.

Then she smiled.

A small, calm smile.

"That's an interesting question," she said into the microphone.

Vanessa's fingers tightened around the pearls.

Richard stood completely now.

"Nia, what are you doing here?""

Nia looked at him.

"Walking in my mother's show, Dad.""

Brianna leaned toward Vanessa.

"Mom, do something!""

But Vanessa couldn't move.

The host approached the runway with a microphone.

"Before we continue, we would like to invite Miss Bennett to say a few words about her remarkable design.""

Nia accepted the microphone.

She turned toward the audience.

"This gown was inspired by a sketch my mother left in her sewing studio. I made it using the skills she taught me when I was a little girl.""

The audience applauded.

Nia continued.

"She used to tell me that a person could lose almost everything and still have the power to begin again.""

Her eyes briefly returned to Vanessa.

"I didn't understand what she meant until recently.""

The ballroom grew quiet.

Then the host stepped forward.

"Miss Bennett, before you leave the stage, there is one more announcement.""

Nia looked at him.

He smiled.

"The board of Eleanor House has unanimously approved a special resolution concerning the company's future leadership.""

Vanessa slowly lowered her glass.

Richard's face turned pale.

Brianna whispered, "What resolution?""

The host opened a black folder.

"Tonight, we officially welcome the woman who will oversee the Eleanor House legacy moving forward.""

He turned toward Nia.

"Miss Nia Bennett, the sole beneficiary and appointed controlling owner of Eleanor House.""

A stunned silence swept through the ballroom.

Then applause erupted.

Nia stood beneath the golden lights, holding the microphone.

Across the room, Vanessa's hand flew to her necklace.

Richard stared at his daughter as if he were seeing her for the first time.

But the announcement wasn't finished.

The host looked down at another page.

"And there is one additional matter concerning the Bennett family's previous business arrangements that our legal representatives have requested we address privately...""

At the Bennett table, Richard suddenly sat down.

Vanessa leaned toward him.

"What does he mean?""

Richard didn't answer.

Because he recognized the name printed at the bottom of the document in the host's hand.

May you like

*Harrington, Cole & Associates.*

And he knew exactly what was coming next.
