Chapter 4: The Secret Behind the Pearls

The ballroom remained silent.

Richard Bennett stared at the black folder in the host's hands.

He knew that name.

Harrington, Cole & Associates.

Three years earlier, he had sat in their offices, demanding access to Eleanor's business interests. He had been convinced that his marriage to Eleanor gave him some claim over her company.

He had been wrong.

And now, the same lawyers were standing between him and the daughter he had thrown out.

Vanessa leaned toward him.

"Richard, what is happening?""

"Nothing," he whispered.

"Don't tell me nothing. Why does that law firm have something to do with us?""

Richard looked toward Nia.

She stood beneath the golden chandeliers, holding the microphone with a calmness that made him uncomfortable.

The host stepped forward.

"Tonight, Eleanor House celebrates not only the extraordinary legacy of its founder but also the integrity of the arrangements she established to protect that legacy.""

A tall man in a dark suit approached the stage.

Nia recognized him immediately.

Thomas Harrington.

He nodded politely before addressing the audience.

"Good evening. My name is Thomas Harrington. Our firm represented the late Eleanor Bennett in several matters concerning her personal estate and business interests.""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

Thomas continued.

"Mrs. Bennett created a legally protected trust for her daughter. The trust became fully actionable when Miss Nia Bennett reached the age of twenty-one.""

He paused.

"Following the completion of the required verification procedures, Nia is now the sole beneficiary and controlling owner of the assets placed under that arrangement.""

The audience applauded.

Vanessa didn't.

She gripped the edge of the table.

"That's impossible," she whispered.

Brianna leaned closer.

"Mom, she's saying Nia owns the company?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"Your father would have told me.""

Richard's jaw tightened.

Thomas opened his folder.

"However, our firm has also been instructed to address an unresolved matter involving an attempted claim against the estate.""

The ballroom quieted again.

"Several years ago, Richard Bennett submitted a request seeking authority over certain assets belonging to Eleanor Bennett's estate. That request was rejected because he had no legal entitlement to those assets.""

Richard stood.

"This is a private family matter!""

Thomas looked directly at him.

"Mr. Bennett, the matter concerns the legal ownership of assets belonging to Eleanor House. It is therefore not a private family matter.""

A few guests exchanged glances.

Vanessa stood beside Richard.

"You're embarrassing us!""

Thomas didn't react.

He removed another document.

"More recently, questions were raised concerning certain jewelry and personal belongings originally registered in the name of Eleanor Bennett.""

Vanessa instinctively touched the pearl necklace.

Nia noticed.

So did Thomas.

"One of those items is the pearl necklace currently being worn by Mrs. Vanessa Bennett.""

The room seemed to shrink.

Vanessa's hand dropped.

She looked around at the guests.

"This necklace was given to me by my husband.""

Thomas nodded.

"Then you should have no difficulty explaining the transfer documentation.""

Vanessa turned toward Richard.

"Tell him!""

Richard didn't answer.

Thomas continued.

"Our records indicate that the necklace was part of Eleanor Bennett's personal collection and was specifically designated as an item to be transferred to her daughter.""

Nia stared at the pearls.

She remembered her mother wearing them at Christmas.

She remembered sitting on the floor while Eleanor fastened the necklace and told her about the woman who had originally owned it.

"Mom said those pearls were meant to be mine," Nia said quietly.

Vanessa turned sharply.

"Don't you dare.""

Nia faced her.

"Why are you wearing them?""

"Because your father gave them to me!""

Thomas looked at Richard.

"Did you have legal authority to transfer them?""

Richard's silence was answer enough.

Brianna reached toward her mother's arm.

"Mom, take it off.""

Vanessa pulled away.

"I'm not taking off anything!""

A few guests began whispering.

Nia raised her microphone.

"Please don't turn this into a spectacle.""

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"How convenient! You walk into a ballroom wearing a ridiculous costume, announce that you're rich, and suddenly everyone is supposed to worship you?""

Nia looked down at her gown.

"This isn't a costume. I made it.""

"With what money?""

"With my hands.""

"You expect us to believe you made that dress in some filthy little room?""

Nia's expression remained steady.

"Yes.""

Brianna stepped forward.

"Mom, let's leave.""

But Vanessa wasn't finished.

She pointed at Nia.

"You were living in our house until a few days ago. You had nothing. You couldn't even afford a decent pair of shoes!""

Nia looked at the shoes beneath her gown.

"They were my mother's.""

"Exactly! You were wearing hand-me-downs while we gave you a roof over your head.""

Nia lowered the microphone slightly.

"You didn't give me a roof. You gave me a room and made sure I understood every day that I wasn't welcome.""

Richard finally spoke.

"Nia, we can discuss this at home.""

She looked at him.

"Home?""

He swallowed.

"Your old home. We can talk privately.""

Nia shook her head.

"I don't live there anymore.""

"We can change that.""

"Why?""

Richard glanced toward the audience.

"Because we're family.""

Nia almost laughed.

Three days earlier, he had stood beside the front door while Vanessa threw her out.

Now he wanted to discuss family.

Thomas stepped closer.

"Mr. Bennett, I suggest you refrain from making any statements about the estate until you have consulted independent legal counsel.""

Vanessa turned on him.

"Who do you think you are?""

Thomas calmly closed his folder.

"The attorney who has protected Eleanor Bennett's instructions for over a decade.""

Vanessa's face reddened.

Nia returned the microphone to the host.

"Thank you.""

Then she walked off the stage.

The applause followed her.

Behind the stage, Celeste Morgan waited with a glass of water.

"That was extraordinary," she said.

Nia accepted the glass.

"My knees are shaking.""

Celeste smiled.

"Nobody could tell.""

Nia looked through the curtain.

Vanessa was still standing beside the table, arguing with Thomas.

Richard had taken his phone out.

Brianna was speaking rapidly into someone's ear.

"They're not going to let this go," Nia said.

"No," Celeste replied.

"But you don't have to fight them alone.""

Nia looked at her.

"Thank you.""

Celeste gently touched the gown.

"Your mother would have been proud.""

Nia looked down at the silver crystals.

"I wish she could see it.""

"Perhaps she can, in the only way that matters.""

Before Nia could respond, a young event coordinator hurried backstage.

"Miss Bennett, I'm sorry to interrupt. There's a woman at the entrance asking to speak with you.""

"Who?""

The coordinator hesitated.

"She says she worked for your mother. Her name is Margaret Ellis.""

Nia's eyes widened.

Margaret.

She remembered an older woman who used to visit Eleanor's studio when she was a child.

Margaret had been her mother's closest business assistant.

"Please bring her here.""

A minute later, an elderly woman entered the room.

Her silver hair was neatly arranged, and she held a small velvet box.

When she saw Nia, her eyes filled with tears.

"Oh, sweetheart.""

Nia rushed forward.

"Margaret!""

They embraced.

Margaret stepped back and examined her face.

"You have your mother's eyes.""

Nia smiled through her tears.

"Where have you been?""

"Your mother asked me to step away from the company after she became ill. She wanted me to keep something safe until you were ready.""

Margaret opened the velvet box.

Inside was a small gold key.

Nia looked at it.

"What does it open?""

Margaret glanced toward the ballroom.

"Your mother's private archive. There's a room beneath the original Eleanor House studio. It contains her original designs, financial records, and something she never wanted your father to find.""

Nia's smile disappeared.

"What?""

Margaret lowered her voice.

"Proof that Richard wasn't the only person who tried to take something from your mother.""

Nia stared at the key.

"Who else?""

Margaret looked toward the ballroom entrance.

"Vanessa.""

Across the ballroom, Vanessa had finally removed the pearl necklace.

She dropped it into her handbag.

Richard approached her.

"Give it to me.""

She glared.

"Why?""

"Because we need to return it.""

"Are you insane? Do you know how much that necklace is worth?""

"It's not ours.""

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

"Richard, listen to me. If Nia has that kind of money, we need to get close to her. We cannot afford to become her enemies.""

He looked at her with disbelief.

"You threw her out.""

"That was before I knew.""

Brianna joined them.

"Mom, people are taking pictures of us.""

Vanessa glanced around.

Several guests were openly watching.

She straightened her dress.

"Then smile.""

"Why?""

"Because nobody needs to know what's happening.""

Richard looked toward the stage.

Nia was speaking with an older woman.

He recognized her.

Margaret Ellis.

His expression changed.

"Vanessa...""

"What now?""

"That's Eleanor's old assistant.""

Vanessa followed his gaze.

For the first time that evening, she looked genuinely frightened.

Because Margaret was holding something Richard had hoped would never surface.

May you like

A small gold key.

And he knew exactly what it opened.
