Chapter 9: The Brother Who Never Died
For three years, I had mourned a dead man.
I had stood beside a grave.
I had listened to people tell stories about his final moments.
I had accepted that my brother was gone.
But now he was sitting outside a coffee shop.
Watching me.
Alive.
Lily grabbed my arm.
“Daniel, don’t go outside.””
I couldn’t move.
Michael looked exactly like the memories.
Older.
Harder.
But still him.
The same eyes.
The same expression that always made me feel like I was being measured.
“What does he want?””
Lily’s voice was shaking.
“Control.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“It’s the only one that matters.””
My phone rang.
Vanessa.
I answered.
“What did you do?””
Her breathing changed.
Not fear.
Frustration.
“Daniel, where are you?””
“You already know.””
A pause.
“You met Lily.””
“Yes.””
Another pause.
Then quietly:
“I was hoping you wouldn’t.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You were hoping I wouldn’t find my wife’s daughter?””
“I was hoping you wouldn’t find the truth this way.””
“Why?””
“Because now Michael knows you know.””
I looked at the SUV.
“He’s there.””
Silence.
“Vanessa?””
Finally:
“Yes.””
The confirmation made my stomach turn.
“How long have you been working with him?””
“Daniel—”
“How long?””
Her voice cracked.
“I’m not working with him.””
“Then why is he alive?””
“I didn’t know.””
“You knew about Lily.””
“Yes.””
“You knew about Laura’s recordings.””
“Yes.””
“Then what else did you know?””
Nothing.
Just silence.
And somehow, that silence answered me.
“You lied to me.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than another lie.
“Why?””
“Because Laura asked me to.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She knew Michael was watching.””
I looked at Lily.
She was staring at me.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa’s voice lowered.
“Daniel, listen carefully. I made mistakes. I did things I regret. But I never wanted Emily hurt.””
“Then why destroy the recorder?””
“Because Michael was looking for it.””
The answer made no sense.
“You expect me to believe you broke it to protect us?””
“Yes.””
“By destroying Laura’s last message?””
“I thought it was the copy.””
I stopped.
“The copy?””
Vanessa continued.
“The silver recorder wasn’t the original.””
I closed my eyes.
Everyone had known.
Everyone except me.
“Where is the original?””
“Your mother has it.””
“I know.””
“Then you know more than I thought.””
I looked at Michael’s car.
“What does he want?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
“He wants Emily.””
The words hit like a punch.
“Why?””
“Because of the inheritance.””
I froze.
“What inheritance?””
“Laura’s.””
I felt sick.
“Laura didn’t have an inheritance.””
Vanessa was quiet.
“She never told you.””
“What?””
“Laura owned shares in her father’s company.””
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
“No. She hid it.””
“Why?””
“Because Michael knew.””
I looked at Lily.
Her face was pale.
“Michael wants money?””
“No.””
Vanessa’s voice became almost a whisper.
“He wants Emily because Emily is the legal heir.””
Everything stopped.
My daughter.
Eight years old.
A child.
And people had been fighting over her without her knowing.
“What did Laura do?””
“She put everything in a trust.””
“For Emily?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t she tell me?””
“Because Michael would have gone after her.””
I looked at the SUV.
My brother.
The man who had been hiding.
The man who had let his own family believe he was dead.
“What do we do?””
Vanessa was silent.
Then:
“Get Emily somewhere safe.””
The call ended.
I looked at Lily.
“We have to go.””
She nodded.
But before we reached the door, Michael stepped out of the SUV.
Rain fell around him.
He didn’t rush.
He didn’t need to.
He knew we were trapped.
Lily moved behind me.
Michael smiled.
“Daniel.””
Hearing my name from him made my skin crawl.
“You look older.””
I stared at him.
“You’re alive.””
He smiled.
“Disappointed?””
“You let everyone bury you.””
“I needed them to stop looking.””
“At what?””
“At the truth.””
I stepped forward.
“You destroyed Laura’s life.””
His expression changed.
“Careful.””
“You threatened her.””
“I protected what was mine.””
“What was yours?””
He looked past me.
Toward Lily.
Then he said:
“My daughter.””
Lily’s face went white.
“No.””
Michael smiled.
“Yes.””
I looked between them.
“You’re lying.””
“Am I?””
He pulled something from his coat.
A document.
Old.
Folded.
He held it out.
“Ask Laura.””
My hands tightened.
“What is that?””
“The reason she ran.””
I didn’t take it.
Michael stepped closer.
“The reason she chose you.””
The words cut deeper.
“What does that mean?””
His smile disappeared.
“Your wife didn’t marry you because she loved you.””
Silence.
“She married you because she needed protection.””
My heart stopped.
“No.””
Michael looked at me.
“She used you, Daniel.””
I heard Lily gasp.
And then Michael said the sentence that shattered everything I thought I knew.
“Because before Laura ever became your wife…”
He looked at me.
“She was already my wife.””
I couldn’t breathe.
The rain kept falling.
The world kept moving.
May you like
But my entire life had just broken apart.
And in Michael’s hand was the proof.
