Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew Everything

I didn’t open Laura’s letter at the coffee shop.

Not with Lily sitting across from me.

Not with my entire understanding of my life collapsing around me.

I needed answers first.

“How does Vanessa know about you?””

Lily looked uncomfortable.

“Because she met me.””

“When?””

“Before you married her.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa never mentioned you.””

Lily gave a small, painful smile.

“Exactly.””

I looked down at the letter.

“What happened?””

She wrapped both hands around her coffee cup.

“After Laura died, I thought I had lost the only person protecting me.””

Her voice softened.

“Then Vanessa found me.””

My stomach tightened.

“She came to you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“At first, she said she wanted to help.””

I already knew where this was going.

“And then?””

“She asked questions.””

“What questions?””

“About Laura.””

I waited.

“About you.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“She wanted to know if Laura had told me anything.””

“About what?””

“About the recordings.””

I froze.

“The recordings.””

Lily nodded.

“She knew Laura recorded messages.””

“How?””

“Because she was there.””

My breathing stopped.

“Where?””

“In the hospital.””

The room seemed to disappear.

“Vanessa was there when Laura recorded them?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

“Because Laura asked her not to.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Lily leaned forward.

“Daniel, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Vanessa wasn’t always your enemy.””

That was the last thing I expected.

“What are you saying?””

“She loved you.””

The words felt impossible.

“She loved Laura too.””

I stared.

“Then why did she destroy the recorder?””

“Because she changed.””

The answer was simple.

Terrifyingly simple.

“People don’t become cruel overnight.””

“No.””

Lily looked at the window.

“They become cruel one choice at a time.””

I thought about Vanessa.

The first dinner we had.

The first time she met Emily.

The way she always seemed to know exactly what to say.

“She wanted my family.””

Lily nodded.

“At first, I think she wanted to join it.””

“And then?””

“Then she wanted Laura’s place.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

Only one page.

Daniel,

If Lily has found you, then I am both happy and afraid.

Happy because she is safe.

Afraid because it means Vanessa knows.

My heart stopped.

I looked at Lily.

She nodded.

I continued.

Vanessa came into our lives when I was already losing mine.

At first, I thought she was kind.

I thought she would be someone who could help you after I was gone.

But grief reveals people.

Sometimes it makes them more loving.

Sometimes it reveals what they were hiding.

My hands shook.

I started noticing things.

Things missing.

Conversations changed.

Emily repeating words she didn’t understand.

And then I discovered Vanessa had been speaking to Michael.

I stopped reading.

“Michael?””

Lily looked down.

“Yes.””

My voice was barely a whisper.

“My brother was alive.””

“Yes.””

“And Vanessa knew.””

“Yes.””

I continued.

I don’t know what they planned.

I only know Michael wanted something.

Control.

Money.

Revenge.

I never understood which.

But I knew one thing.

He believed Emily belonged to him.

The letter continued.

Daniel, if anything happens to me, protect Emily.

And protect Lily.

Because Michael doesn’t forgive.

He collects.

The letter ended there.

I read the final sentence again.

*He collects.*

“What does that mean?””

Lily looked terrified.

“Daniel…”

“What?””

She reached into her bag again.

This time she pulled out a newspaper clipping.

My hands went cold.

The headline read:

*LOCAL BUSINESSMAN PRESUMED DEAD AFTER CAR ACCIDENT*

The photo was my brother.

Michael.

But the date was wrong.

The accident happened two years after Laura died.

Two years after everyone said he was gone.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Lily shook her head.

“He wanted everyone to believe he was dead.””

“Why?””

“Because he was building something.””

“What?””

She looked at me.

“A way to take back what he thought belonged to him.””

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Vanessa.

*We need to talk. I know you met Lily.*

I stared at the screen.

Lily saw it.

“She knows.””

“How?””

“She always knows.””

Another message appeared.

*Come home alone. If you bring anyone, Emily gets hurt.*

My blood turned cold.

I stood immediately.

“What happened?””

I showed Lily.

Her face went pale.

“No.””

“What?””

“She’s not threatening you.””

“Then who?””

Lily looked at the message.

And whispered:

“She’s warning you.””

“About what?””

The answer came before she spoke.

A car horn outside.

A black SUV parked across the street.

Someone was sitting inside.

Watching.

Lily grabbed my arm.

“Daniel.””

“What?””

“That’s not Vanessa.””

The window of the SUV lowered.

And I saw the person behind the wheel.

A man.

Older.

Cold eyes.

A familiar face.

A face I had seen in old family photographs.

May you like

My brother.

Michael.
