Chapter 6: The Daughter I Never Knew
I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.
A child.
A little girl.
Standing beside Laura and my mother.
The same age Emily would have been in the picture.
My brain searched for an explanation.
A cousin.
A family friend.
Someone’s daughter.
Anything.
Anything except what my heart was already beginning to understand.
“Where did you find this?”” I asked.
Emily pointed toward her closet.
“Behind my books.””
My eyes moved to the shelves.
The shelves Vanessa had been cleaning.
The shelves where she had packed away my daughter’s memories.
“Did Vanessa give this to you?””
Emily shook her head.
“No.””
“Then who?””
She looked confused.
“It was just there.””
I took the photograph.
“Emily, I need you to go to Grandma’s room, okay?””
“Why?””
“Because Daddy needs to talk to Vanessa.””
Her face changed.
“Are you angry?””
I forced myself to soften.
“No.””
A lie.
A necessary one.
“I just need answers.””
After Emily left, I walked downstairs.
Vanessa was still standing near the table.
The folder remained open.
The sentence was still visible.
*Daniel cannot know the child is not—*
I held up the photograph.
“Explain.””
Vanessa looked at it.
Then looked away.
“Where did you get that?””
“Emily found it.””
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
Because she didn’t answer, I knew.
“Who is she?””
Vanessa sat down.
For the first time, she looked tired.
Not composed.
Not controlled.
Just tired.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””
“Find out what?””
She looked at me.
“Laura had another child.””
The room became silent.
I laughed.
A strange, empty sound.
“No.””
“Daniel—”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
“She was born before you met Laura.””
I stared.
“Then why is she with Laura?””
Vanessa looked at the photograph.
“Because Laura raised her.””
My stomach twisted.
“Where is she now?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Where is she?””
“She disappeared.””
The words landed like a punch.
“Disappeared?””
“After Laura died.””
I took a step back.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“Who was the father?””
Vanessa looked down.
“I don’t know.””
“You expect me to believe Laura had a child and never told me?””
“She was afraid.””
“Of me?””
“No.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Of losing Emily.””
That made no sense.
“Why would she lose Emily?””
“Because the truth was complicated.””
“Then explain it.””
Vanessa looked toward the stairs.
“Your mother knows more.””
Of course.
My mother.
Again.
Everyone knew except me.
I grabbed my keys.
“Where are you going?””
“To get the truth.””
“Daniel.””
I stopped.
Vanessa’s voice changed.
“Before you judge Laura, listen to everything.””
I looked back.
“Are you defending her?””
“No.””
A pause.
“I’m saying she was scared.””
That was the first honest thing Vanessa had said all day.
I drove to my mother’s house.
She opened the door before I knocked.
Like she knew I was coming.
The moment she saw my face, she whispered:
“You found the picture.””
I felt something inside me break.
“You knew.””
My mother started crying.
“Daniel…”
“How long?””
She covered her mouth.
“How long did you know Laura had another daughter?””
“Since before Emily was born.””
I froze.
“Before Emily?””
She nodded.
I couldn’t understand.
Nothing made sense.
“Tell me everything.””
My mother stepped aside.
And for the first time in my life, I saw fear in her eyes.
Not worry.
Not sadness.
Fear.
“Her name was Lily.””
The name sounded unfamiliar.
Wrong.
Like a missing piece of my own family.
“Lily was Laura’s daughter?””
“Yes.””
“Who was the father?””
My mother hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Your brother.””
The room stopped moving.
I stared at her.
“My brother?””
She nodded.
“My older brother, Michael.””
A brother I had buried five years ago.
A brother everyone said had died in an accident.
A brother who had disappeared from our lives long before Laura entered mine.
“That’s impossible.””
“I wish it was.””
My mother sat down.
“Laura was young. Michael was struggling. They made mistakes.””
My head spun.
“Then why didn’t she tell me?””
“Because Michael was dangerous.””
The word chilled me.
“What do you mean?””
My mother looked at the floor.
“Daniel, your brother didn’t die in an accident.””
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
“He left.””
“Why?””
“Because Laura found out what he had done.””
“What did he do?””
My mother looked toward the window.
And then she said the one thing I never expected.
“He tried to take Lily away.””
I felt sick.
“And Laura hid her?””
“She protected her.””
“Where is Lily now?””
My mother’s eyes filled with tears.
“I don’t know.””
A silence followed.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
One photo.
A young woman standing outside a coffee shop.
A woman with Laura’s eyes.
Underneath the picture was a message.
*You wanted the truth about Laura’s daughter. Meet her before Vanessa finds her.*
My hands shook.
May you like
Because beneath the message was a name.
*Lily.*
