Chapter 9: The Final Witness
Daniel didn’t speak for almost a minute.
Sometimes shock is too large for words.
The truth had become something impossible.
Something his mind refused to accept.
Claire.
His wife.
The woman who had slept beside him.
The woman who had held his hand at their wedding.
Had been connected to the night his father died.
“No,” Daniel said again.
This time louder.
“No.””
Marcus didn’t argue.
He didn’t need to.
The recording existed.
The voice existed.
The past had finally found us.
I touched Daniel’s shoulder.
He stepped away.
Not from me.
From the reality crashing down around him.
“I married her.””
His voice cracked.
“I brought her into this family.””
I looked at him.
“She fooled all of us.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“She fooled me.””
That was the hardest part.
Not being betrayed.
Realizing you had helped the betrayal happen.
Marcus looked outside.
“We need to move.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because if Claire knows we found this recording, she knows everything is exposed.””
I thought of her smile.
Her confidence.
Her calm.
Marcus was right.
She wouldn’t run.
She would attack.
We returned home before sunset.
The house looked exactly the same.
That was the cruelest thing about tragedy.
The world never changes when yours does.
The same flowers sat on the porch.
The same curtains moved in the wind.
The same walls held the memories of a family that no longer existed.
But someone was inside.
The front door opened before we reached it.
Claire stood there.
Waiting.
She wasn’t crying.
She wasn’t pretending.
She looked tired.
“You know.””
It wasn’t a question.
Daniel stopped.
“How long?””
Claire looked at him.
“I don’t know what you think you know.””
“Don’t.””
His voice was different.
Cold.
“You were there.””
Her face changed slightly.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“I loved you.””
Daniel laughed.
A painful sound.
“You loved me?””
“Yes.””
“You lied to me.””
“I protected you.””
“From what?””
She looked at me.
“From your mother’s obsession.””
I stepped forward.
“Still?””
Claire’s eyes hardened.
“You still think you’re the hero.””
“No.””
I looked at her.
“I think I’m the person you tried to destroy.””
Daniel held up the phone.
The recording.
Claire’s face finally changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Where did you get that?””
Daniel stared.
“You remember.””
She said nothing.
“You remember my father.””
Silence.
Then Claire whispered:
“I was seventeen.””
Nobody expected that.
Not even me.
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
Claire looked at the floor.
“My father worked with your uncle.””
Marcus stiffened.
Richard.
“He used me.””
Her voice became softer.
“He made me do things.””
Daniel stared.
“You’re saying you were forced?””
Claire looked up.
For the first time, I saw something other than cruelty.
Pain.
But pain didn’t erase what she had done.
“What things?”” Daniel asked.
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was there because Richard wanted someone young enough nobody would suspect.””
She looked at me.
“Your father found out.””
I whispered:
“And you watched him die.””
Claire closed her eyes.
“No.””
The word came quickly.
“I tried to help him.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Then why did you hide everything?””
“Because Richard threatened me.””
She stepped closer.
“He said he would destroy me. He said he would destroy Daniel too.””
Daniel froze.
“You knew me?””
Claire nodded.
“Your father showed me pictures of you.””
The room went silent.
“You were the reason I listened.””
Daniel looked devastated.
“What?””
“I thought if I helped him, I could protect myself.””
She looked at me.
“But then your mother found the box.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“So you created the assault story.””
Claire looked away.
“Yes.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“You framed my mother.””
“I panicked.””
“You framed her.””
“I needed time.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice shook.
“You needed control.””
Claire didn’t deny it.
That hurt more.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Margaret.
I opened it.
One sentence.
Eleanor, don’t trust Claire.
I looked at the screen.
Another message arrived.
She is not the only person who lied.
My heart sank.
Daniel saw my face.
“What?””
I looked at the message.
Then at the people standing in front of me.
Because suddenly I understood.
Claire had lied.
Richard had lied.
Margaret had lied.
But one person was still missing.
One person who knew everything from the beginning.
The phone buzzed again.
A photo appeared.
A photo of my husband.
Taken on the night he died.
May you like
And standing beside him…
was me.
