Chapter 3: The Name on the Account

I stared at the document.

My name.

My signature.

My money.

But I had never seen that account before.

“Where did you get this?”” I asked.

Daniel stepped inside and closed the door behind him.

“I found it hidden in Claire’s desk.””

I looked at him.

“Hidden?””

He nodded.

“She didn’t know I had access to her old files.””

My fingers trembled as I turned the page.

The account contained thousands of dollars.

Money transferred from my savings.

Money I had never authorized.

“This is impossible,” I whispered.

Daniel sat down.

“She’s been moving money for months.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

His eyes filled with shame.

“I don’t know.””

I wanted to believe that.

But another question appeared in my mind.

“How long have you known something was wrong?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That silence told me everything.

“Daniel.””

He rubbed his face.

“A few weeks.””

“A few weeks?””

“I was trying to figure it out.””

“You were trying to figure it out while letting her accuse me of assault?””

His eyes closed.

“I thought maybe there was an explanation.””

I laughed quietly.

An explanation.

That was what people searched for when the truth was too painful.

I walked to the window.

Outside, the neighborhood was peaceful.

Lights glowing.

Families eating dinner.

People laughing.

Nobody knew that inside this house, a mother and son were watching their family fall apart.

“What else?”” I asked.

Daniel hesitated.

“What?””

“You brought me this folder. You’re not just showing me a bank account.””

He looked at the papers.

“There’s more.””

My stomach tightened.

He handed me another page.

It was an email.

From Claire.

To someone named Marcus.

The message was short.

“Everything is moving exactly as planned. Once Daniel believes his mother is unstable, getting control of the property will be easy.””

I stopped breathing.

Control of the property.

My property.

My home.

The home I gave them.

Daniel whispered, “Mom…”

I didn’t answer.

Because suddenly every strange moment from the past year made sense.

The way Claire always asked about my health.

The way she pushed me to sign documents.

The way she insisted I should “simplify” my finances.

The way she became angry whenever I refused.

“She was trying to take my house.””

Daniel looked sick.

“I’m sorry.””

I turned toward him.

“Stop saying sorry.””

He froze.

“Your apology doesn’t mean anything unless you do something.””

“I will.””

“Will you?””

He looked hurt.

“Yes.””

“Because the last time you had to choose between believing me and believing her…”

I touched my cheek.

“…you chose her.””

Daniel looked down.

“I know.””

For the first time, he looked like my son again.

Not the angry man who had slapped me.

Just a broken person realizing what he had done.

Then we heard something.

A car door outside.

Daniel walked toward the window.

His face changed.

“What?””

He stepped back.

“It’s Claire.””

My heart started racing.

“She came back?””

Daniel nodded.

“She’s not alone.””

We moved quietly toward the hallway.

Through the window, I saw Claire standing beside a man in a dark jacket.

Marcus.

I recognized him.

Not personally.

But from the email.

The man helping her steal my life.

They were talking near the driveway.

Daniel grabbed his phone.

“We need to record this.””

I nodded.

We watched.

Claire looked around carefully before speaking.

“She found the recording.””

Marcus replied, “Then we move faster.””

My blood ran cold.

Daniel looked at me.

The phone continued recording.

Claire’s voice carried through the open window.

“Daniel is already confused. He’ll come back to me.””

Marcus laughed.

“And your mother?””

Claire smiled.

A small, cruel smile.

“She’s emotional. She’ll break.””

I felt something inside me go quiet.

Not sadness.

Not fear.

Something stronger.

A decision.

Daniel heard it too.

His grip tightened around the phone.

Then Marcus said something that made both of us freeze.

“You’re forgetting one problem.””

Claire looked at him.

“What?””

“The woman you’re trying to destroy isn’t as powerless as you think.””

Claire frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Marcus looked directly toward the house.

Toward us.

And smiled.

“She hired me first.””

I stopped.

Daniel stopped.

The world seemed to disappear.

Because Marcus wasn’t Claire’s partner.

He was something else.

Someone else.

And before we could understand what he meant…

Claire turned toward the window.

Her eyes locked with mine.

Then she smiled.

May you like

Because she knew.

She knew we had heard everything.
