Chapter 6: The Truth Daniel Never Heard

Daniel locked every door in the house.

Every window.

Every entrance.

The same man who had once accused me of hurting his wife was now checking the locks to protect me.

Life had a strange way of forcing people to understand what they had lost.

“I need you to tell me everything,” Daniel said.

We sat at the kitchen table.

The same table where Claire had claimed I attacked her.

The same place where she had tried to destroy my life.

I placed the letter in front of him.

“Your father discovered someone was stealing from his company.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

Daniel looked at me.

“You do.””

I looked away.

He noticed.

“Mom.””

I sighed.

“There was a name.””

“Whose?””

I was silent.

Then I said it.

“Richard Hale.””

Daniel froze.

“Hale?””

I nodded.

“Marcus’s father.””

The room went quiet.

Daniel leaned back.

“So Marcus wasn’t just helping Claire.””

“No.””

“He was investigating?””

“Yes.””

“But why pretend to be on her side?””

I looked at the window.

“Because sometimes the best way to catch someone is to let them think they are winning.””

Daniel absorbed that.

Then his expression changed.

“Wait.””

He looked at the papers.

“Claire knew about the documents?””

“She knew my husband left something behind.””

“How?””

I swallowed.

“Because she asked questions.””

“What kind?””

I remembered.

The conversations.

The smiles.

The fake concern.

“She asked where your father kept important papers. She asked if the house had any hidden spaces.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“And I ignored it.””

I didn’t answer.

He looked down.

“I brought her into this family.””

I reached across the table.

“Daniel.””

He pulled his hand away.

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“No, Mom. I need to feel this.””

I let him.

Because guilt was painful.

But sometimes guilt was the beginning of change.

The next morning, we went to meet Marcus.

Not because we trusted him.

Because we needed answers.

He was waiting at a quiet café across town.

When he saw us, he stood.

“Eleanor.””

“Explain.””

Marcus nodded.

“I owe you that.””

Daniel crossed his arms.

“You knew who Claire was.””

“I suspected.””

“You let her get close to my family.””

Marcus looked at him.

“I needed proof.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Proof?””

His voice dropped.

“My mother was almost arrested.””

Marcus looked ashamed.

“You’re right.””

For the first time, I saw regret on his face.

He placed a folder on the table.

“The truth is Claire was never working alone.””

Daniel opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Emails.

Transaction records.

Then one photo stopped him.

A picture of Claire.

Standing beside someone else.

Someone I recognized.

Daniel looked at me.

“You know him?””

I nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Who is he?””

I stared at the picture.

A man from my past.

A man my husband had warned me about.

“Your uncle.””

Daniel went completely still.

“My uncle?””

I nodded.

“Your father’s brother.””

The man who disappeared after my husband’s death.

The man everyone thought had left town.

Marcus leaned forward.

“He’s been using different names for years.””

Daniel looked at the evidence.

“Why?””

I whispered:

“Because he wanted what your father left behind.””

“What?””

I looked at the flash drive on the table.

“The proof that could destroy him.””

Marcus opened another file.

“There’s something else.””

Daniel looked up.

“What?””

Marcus turned the page.

“Claire didn’t accidentally choose your family.””

My stomach tightened.

“She was sent.””

Daniel’s face went pale.

“Sent by who?””

Marcus looked directly at him.

Then he answered.

“By someone inside your family.””

The words hung in the air.

Someone inside.

Someone close.

Someone who knew everything.

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

I opened it.

One sentence appeared on the screen.

You finally told Daniel the truth.

My hands went cold.

Another message arrived.

Now tell him what really happened the night his father died.

I looked at Daniel.

He was staring at me.

Waiting.

Because he knew.

There was another secret.

A bigger one.

The one I had buried for seven years.

The one I had promised myself my son would never know.

And now I had no choice.

I whispered:

“Daniel…”

His eyes narrowed.

“What happened that night?””

I opened my mouth.

But before I could answer, every light in the café suddenly went out.

May you like

And in the darkness…

someone whispered my name.
