Chapter 6: Lily’s Last Secret

The photograph loaded slowly.

Every second felt longer than it should have.

When it finally appeared, I stared at the handwriting.

It wasn’t Nicole’s.

It wasn’t my father’s.

It was Lily’s.

My biological mother’s.

A woman I had never met.

A woman whose voice I would never hear.

But whose words were suddenly the only thing connecting me to the beginning of my story.

Daniel had sent one page.

Only one.

At the top was a date.

Two days before my birth.

The first sentence made my heart stop.

“If you are reading this, something happened to me.””

I covered my mouth.

My father sat beside me.

Nicole stood across the room, frozen.

Daniel called moments later.

Richard answered.

“Hello?””

We all listened.

Daniel’s voice came through.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t know if I should send this.””

My father looked at me.

“She needs to know.””

Daniel continued.

“Lily wrote this because she knew people would hide the truth.””

Nicole closed her eyes.

I noticed.

She knew.

She knew exactly what was coming.

“Read it,” I whispered.

Daniel paused.

Then he began.

“‘My baby girl, if you grow up wondering why certain people made decisions for you, I want you to know one thing. I fought for you.’”

My eyes filled with tears.

Daniel continued.

“‘I chose Daniel because he loved me. But I also knew Richard was the kind of man who would love a child even if she wasn’t his by blood.’”

My father looked up.

“What?””

Nicole looked away.

I felt confused.

“Richard?””

Daniel kept reading.

“‘Nicole is my sister. She promised me she would protect Maya if I didn’t survive.’”

The room went silent.

My mother was not just someone who raised me.

She was Lily’s sister.

My aunt.

My family.

But there was more.

“‘The truth about Maya’s father is not what matters. What matters is that she is loved.’”

I closed my eyes.

For the first time in days, I felt like I could breathe.

Because the secret was not that I had been unwanted.

The secret was that everyone had been afraid.

Everyone except me.

Then Daniel stopped.

“Wait.””

My father frowned.

“What?””

“There’s another page.””

A few seconds passed.

Then Daniel spoke again.

“This part is about Nicole.””

My mother stiffened.

“Don’t.””

My father looked at her.

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

Daniel read.

“‘Nicole told me she would never forgive herself if she lost Maya. She said she would rather let everyone hate her than let Maya know she was afraid.’”

I looked at Nicole.

She started crying.

But I couldn’t tell if it was regret or relief.

Daniel continued.

“‘But I’m worried. Nicole thinks love means holding on too tightly. One day, she may hurt Maya trying to protect her.’”

The words hit harder than anything.

Because Lily had predicted exactly what happened.

My mother’s fear had become the thing that hurt me.

The room stayed quiet.

Then my father stood.

He walked toward Nicole.

For a moment, I thought he would yell.

Instead, he spoke softly.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Nicole looked at him.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That you would stop loving her.””

My father looked at me.

Then back at Nicole.

“Maya never needed your blood to be my daughter.””

Nicole started crying harder.

“I know.””

“No.””

His voice broke.

“You didn’t know.””

The words hung there.

Because he was right.

She had spent eighteen years protecting a secret nobody asked her to protect.

And in doing so, she had created a wound that might never fully heal.

Later that evening, I sat alone in my room.

For the first time, I searched for my own face in the mirror.

Not Nicole’s.

Not Lily’s.

Mine.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Daniel.

“Your mother left something else with the diary.””

I frowned.

Something else?

A second message appeared.

“I think you need to see it before your father does.””

My stomach tightened.

I called him immediately.

“What is it?””

Daniel was quiet.

“Maya…”

“What?””

“It’s a letter.””

“From Lily?””

“No.””

My heartbeat slowed.

“Then who?””

Daniel hesitated.

Finally, he said:

“From Nicole.””

I sat up.

“When was it written?””

A long pause.

Then Daniel answered.

“The day she first found out the pregnancy test wasn’t yours.””

I froze.

Because that meant one thing.

My mother had known the truth from the beginning.

Before she accused me.

Before she lied.

Before she destroyed everything.

May you like

She knew I wasn’t the problem.

And she still chose me as the target.
