Chapter 5: The Man From The Past
The stranger’s name was Daniel Brooks.
I had never heard it before.
Not once.
Not in childhood stories.
Not in family arguments.
Not during birthdays.
Nothing.
Yet within five minutes, my entire identity had been connected to him.
My father sat across from me at the kitchen table.
The same table where my mother had accused me of being pregnant.
The same table where everything had started falling apart.
Only now, the truth was much bigger.
“Why would he call?”” I asked.
Nobody answered.
Nicole looked terrified.
My father looked hurt.
And I looked between them, realizing both of them knew pieces of my life that I had never been allowed to see.
Finally, Dad spoke.
“He said he wants to meet.””
I laughed bitterly.
“After eighteen years?””
Nicole closed her eyes.
“Maya, please.””
“No.””
I looked at her.
“You don’t get to ask me for patience anymore.””
She lowered her head.
My father reached across the table.
“You don’t have to meet him.””
But I could see the question in his eyes.
He wanted answers too.
So did I.
The next day, I met Daniel at a small coffee shop across town.
I almost walked away when I saw him.
Because he looked familiar.
Not like someone I knew.
Like someone I had seen in old photographs without knowing who he was.
He stood when I approached.
“Maya?””
I nodded.
He looked nervous.
More nervous than I was.
“I’m sorry.””
That was the first thing he said.
Not hello.
Not I’m your father.
Just sorry.
“For what?””
He sat down slowly.
“For not finding you sooner.””
I looked at him carefully.
“You knew about me?””
“Yes.””
The answer shocked me.
“Then why wasn’t I raised by you?””
His face fell.
“Because I didn’t know if you were mine.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
He looked down.
“Your mother told me Lily had another relationship. She said there was a chance I wasn’t your father.””
My hands tightened around my coffee cup.
“So everyone knew pieces of the truth except me.””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“That’s not what I wanted.””
“What did you want?””
He looked at me.
“To be your father.””
The simplicity of the answer hurt.
Because I had spent years believing nobody was missing.
But someone had been.
Daniel reached into his jacket.
He placed a small photograph on the table.
It showed a young woman.
My mother.
Not Nicole.
Lily.
My biological mother.
And beside her was Daniel.
“She gave me this before she died.””
I picked up the picture.
“She looks happy.””
“She was.””
I swallowed.
“What happened?””
Daniel took a deep breath.
“She got sick during pregnancy. The doctors knew the birth would be dangerous.””
“And?””
“And she made me promise something.””
“What?””
“That if something happened to her, I would make sure you were loved.””
My eyes burned.
“But you didn’t.””
His face tightened.
“No.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I failed you.””
I looked away.
At least he wasn’t making excuses.
When I returned home, my mother was waiting.
She stood in the living room holding another envelope.
“I need to tell you everything.””
I almost walked past her.
Then I stopped.
“Why now?””
She looked at the floor.
“Because you deserve the truth.””
I crossed my arms.
“Then start.””
Nicole opened the envelope.
Inside were more documents.
“I knew Daniel existed.””
“I know.””
“But I didn’t know if he was your father.””
“So you tested me.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“Without telling me.””
“Yes.””
The answer was so calm it made me angry.
“Why?””
Her voice cracked.
“Because I was scared of losing Richard.””
I stared at her.
“What does Dad have to do with this?””
Nicole sat down.
“When I married your father, I told him you were mine.””
“You mean ours.””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“Just mine.””
The words hit harder than expected.
My mother continued.
“Richard thought he was adopting a child from my past. He didn’t know the details.””
My heart sank.
“Dad never knew?””
“No.””
I looked toward the hallway.
All those years.
My father had loved me completely.
Without conditions.
Without needing biology.
And my mother had spent years afraid that truth would destroy everything.
But then I remembered something.
“Wait.””
Nicole looked up.
“What?””
“If Dad didn’t know…”
I stared at her.
“Why did you suddenly decide to make him think I was pregnant?””
Her face changed.
Because she knew the question she had been avoiding.
“I needed time.””
“For what?””
She looked toward the window.
Then whispered:
“To disappear before the truth came out.””
My blood ran cold.
“Disappear?””
She didn’t answer.
My father entered the room.
He had heard.
“Nicole.””
She turned.
Richard’s voice was quiet.
“You were planning to leave us?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I thought if I left before everything collapsed, I could protect everyone.””
My father shook his head.
“You didn’t protect anyone.””
Then his phone buzzed.
He looked down.
His expression changed.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He showed me the screen.
A message from Daniel.
Three words.
But they changed everything.
“I found Lily’s diary.””
And attached was a photograph of a page.
A page written eighteen years ago.
May you like
A page that explained why my mother had lied.
And why someone had spent my entire life trying to hide my real identity.
