Chapter 4: The Letter That Changed Everything

The paper shook in my hands.

Not because of the words written on it.

Because of the handwriting.

I knew my mother’s handwriting better than anyone.

The same handwriting that signed permission slips when I was younger. The same handwriting that wrote birthday cards and grocery lists and notes telling me to bring an umbrella when it rained.

The same handwriting that had written a sentence that made my entire world tilt.

“I know Maya is not my biological daughter.””

I read it again.

And again.

But the words refused to change.

My father stood beside me, silent.

For the first time in my life, I saw Richard look completely lost.

Not angry.

Not disappointed.

Lost.

“Maya…”

I looked up.

“What does this mean?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because he didn’t know.

And that scared me more than anything.

My mother had always been the person who knew everything.

Where every document was.

Every family memory.

Every detail about my childhood.

She had been the one who told me my first words, my first steps, my first day of school.

Now I was holding proof that she had been hiding something about my entire existence.

Dad took the letter carefully.

“I found this behind the cabinet.””

“When?””

“This morning.””

“Did you read all of it?””

He looked away.

“No.””

I could tell he was lying.

Not because he wanted to hide something.

Because he was trying to protect me.

“Dad.””

He sighed.

“I read enough to know we need to talk to your mother.””

I laughed quietly.

It wasn’t because anything was funny.

It was because my mind couldn’t process another secret.

“Another talk?””

My voice cracked.

“First she says I’m pregnant. Then she’s hiding a pregnancy. Now she’s saying I’m not her daughter?””

Dad reached for my hand.

“Maya, listen to me.””

I pulled away.

“No. I need answers.””

The front door opened downstairs.

Both of us froze.

Nicole was home.

She stopped when she saw us standing there.

Then her eyes dropped to the letter in my father’s hand.

Her face changed instantly.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

She knew.

She had always known.

“Where did you find that?”” she whispered.

My father’s expression hardened.

“Is it true?””

Nicole didn’t answer.

“Maya…”

“Is it true?”” I repeated.

My voice sounded different.

Stronger.

She looked at me.

And for a moment, the woman standing there didn’t look like my mother.

She looked like someone caught hiding from a crime.

She slowly sat down.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She swallowed.

“Eventually.””

I stared at her.

“Eventually?””

The word felt insulting.

“You let me believe my whole life was one thing, and you were going to tell me eventually?””

Nicole covered her face.

“I was afraid.””

My father stepped forward.

“Afraid of what?””

She looked at him.

“Losing her.””

The room became quiet.

My anger paused.

Just for a second.

Because there was something in her voice.

Something real.

Fear.

But fear didn’t erase what she had done.

“You already lost me,” I whispered.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Maya…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to cry now.””

My father looked at the letter.

“Who wrote this?””

Nicole looked down.

“I did.””

“Why?””

She took a shaky breath.

“Because I found out the truth when Maya was six months old.””

My heart stopped.

“Found out what?””

She looked at me.

“That the hospital records were wrong.””

Dad frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Nicole stood and walked toward the cabinet.

She pulled out an old envelope from the drawer.

“I kept everything.””

She placed it on the table.

Inside were documents.

Birth records.

Medical forms.

A hospital bracelet.

My hands went cold.

My name was printed on it.

But underneath it was another name.

A name I had never seen before.

“Who is Lily?”” I asked.

Nicole closed her eyes.

“She was the woman who gave birth to you.””

The room spun.

I grabbed the edge of the table.

“No.””

My father immediately moved closer.

“Maya.””

“No.””

I looked at Nicole.

“You’re saying you adopted me?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Then what?””

Her voice dropped.

“She died.””

The silence afterward was unbearable.

“She died giving birth to me?””

Nicole nodded.

“Complications.””

I looked down at the documents.

My entire life suddenly felt like a story someone else had written.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Nicole wiped her face.

“Because you were my daughter.””

“That doesn’t answer the question.””

She looked at me.

“Because I was afraid you would look at me differently.””

I wanted to understand.

I wanted to.

But then I remembered the pregnancy test.

The lies.

The way she used me.

“You were afraid I would leave you?””

“No.””

She whispered.

“I was afraid you would realize you never needed me.””

That sentence hurt.

Because buried under all the betrayal was a mother who had spent years terrified.

But she had let that fear turn into cruelty.

My father picked up another document.

His eyes narrowed.

“What is this?””

Nicole froze.

I looked at him.

“What?””

He held up a paper.

“DNA testing request.””

My stomach dropped.

“Why did you have this?””

Nicole didn’t answer.

Dad looked at her.

“You tested Maya?””

She sat down.

“I needed proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Her voice barely came out.

“That she wasn’t Richard’s.””

The room went completely silent.

I looked at my father.

Then at Nicole.

“What?””

My father’s face changed.

“Why would you think that?””

Nicole looked away.

“Because Lily was not alone when she had Maya.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

“There was someone else?””

Nicole nodded.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

She opened her mouth.

But before she could speak, the phone on the table rang.

Everyone looked at it.

Unknown number.

Nicole’s face went pale.

My father noticed.

“Answer it.””

She didn’t move.

The phone kept ringing.

Finally, Dad picked it up.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through.

And the moment my father heard his name, his expression changed.

“Maya,” Dad whispered.

I looked at him.

“Who is it?””

He slowly lowered the phone.

May you like

Then he said:

“The man who says he’s your biological father.””
