Chapter 9: The Woman in My Mother's Photograph

I couldn't move.

The woman standing in the doorway looked like my mother.

Not similar.

Not close.

She looked exactly like her.

Same eyes.

Same silver streak in her hair.

Same small scar above her eyebrow.

Even the tiny gold necklace she'd worn every Christmas.

Aaliyah whispered, “Grandma?””

The woman smiled.

“Hello, sweetheart.””

Renee stepped backward.

“No.””

The woman looked at her.

“Hello, Renee.””

“You're not Evelyn.””

“I never said I was.””

I stared at her.

“Who are you?””

She held out the photograph.

“Someone your father trusted.””

Daniel's face had gone gray.

“You.””

The woman smiled.

“Daniel.””

“You were supposed to be dead.””

“So was I.””

She stepped into the room.

Her name was Margaret.

She had been my mother's identical twin.

A sister I'd never heard of.

A sister Samuel had erased from every family record.

A sister who had worked with Victor.

And according to Daniel, the woman who had helped create the entire system of false identities.

I couldn't stop staring at her.

“My mother never mentioned you.””

“She wasn't allowed to.””

“By Samuel?””

“By me.””

My hands curled into fists.

“You watched me grow up.””

“Yes.””

“You knew me.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Aaliyah.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you stay away?””

Margaret's expression softened.

“Because if I had entered your life, Samuel would have killed you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone uses that excuse.””

She looked at Aaliyah.

“She knows I'm telling the truth.””

Aaliyah shook her head.

“No. I don't know anything anymore.””

Margaret's smile disappeared.

“That is exactly why you're in danger.””

I stepped between them.

“Stay away from her.””

Margaret looked at me.

“You still think you're protecting her.””

“I am.””

“No.””

She pointed toward the box.

“You're protecting a lie.””

I looked at the documents.

“What lie?””

“That Samuel was trying to save Aaliyah.””

My stomach tightened.

“You said he paid to keep me with her.””

“He did.””

“Then what was his real goal?””

Margaret walked to the box.

She lifted the ledger.

“The ledger wasn't evidence against Samuel.””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

Margaret opened it.

“It was evidence against Victor.””

She flipped through pages.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Locations.

But then she turned to the final section.

There was a list of children.

I saw Aaliyah's name.

Then another.

Then another.

“What's this?””

Margaret answered.

“Children born to witnesses.””

My skin crawled.

“Why were they listed?””

“Because Victor used them as leverage.””

Daniel whispered, “No.””

Margaret nodded.

“Families were threatened. Children were moved. Names were changed.””

Aaliyah looked at the pages.

“How many?””

“Thirty-two.””

She stared.

“Thirty-two children?””

“Yes.””

“Where are they now?””

Margaret closed the ledger.

“Some don't know who they really are.””

Renee began crying.

“And Aaliyah?””

“She was the last.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because Elias stole the ledger before Victor could use it.””

“Then why didn't he destroy it?””

“Because he needed proof.””

“And Samuel?””

“He wanted the ledger.””

“Why?””

“To bargain with Victor.””

I frowned.

“That doesn't make sense.””

Margaret looked at me.

“Samuel wasn't trying to protect the children.””

“He was trying to protect himself.””

Aaliyah whispered, “Then why did Grandma help?””

Margaret's expression changed.

“Because Evelyn finally realized what Samuel had become.””

She looked at me.

“Your mother betrayed him.””

“How?””

“She copied the ledger.””

I stared.

“The original is here.””

“Yes.””

“And the copy?””

Margaret reached into her coat.

She pulled out a small flash drive.

“This.””

I stared at it.

“What is on it?””

“Everything.””

“Names?””

“Yes.””

“Payments?””

“Yes.””

“Proof?””

“Yes.””

I reached for it.

Margaret pulled it back.

“Not yet.””

“Why?””

“Because there's one final page.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What page?””

“The page Samuel removed.””

She turned to Aaliyah.

“Your page.””

Aaliyah went still.

Margaret placed the ledger on the table.

She opened it to the back.

There was an empty space where a page had been torn away.

I looked at the torn edge.

“What's missing?””

Margaret answered.

“Her real father.””

I felt my pulse quicken.

“But we know Daniel is her biological father.””

“No.””

Margaret shook her head.

“The test was wrong.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You said—”

“I said the DNA matched Daniel.””

“Yes.””

“It did.””

“Then how can he not be the father?””

Margaret looked at me.

“Because Daniel wasn't the only man whose DNA was used.””

My mind raced.

“Whose else?””

She looked at Aaliyah.

“Yours.””

I stared.

“My DNA?””

“The second test compared Aaliyah to Daniel and Marcus.””

I shook my head.

“But the test said I wasn't her biological father.””

“It did.””

“Then what are you saying?””

Margaret's voice softened.

“The test wasn't testing whether you were her father.””

“What was it testing?””

“Whether you were related.””

I looked at Daniel.

Then Renee.

Then Aaliyah.

Margaret continued.

“The result showed that Marcus Hale and Aaliyah Bennett shared a genetic relationship.””

I swallowed.

“Because of Daniel?””

“Yes.””

I frowned.

“Daniel is my uncle.””

“Exactly.””

The room went silent.

Margaret pointed at the report.

“That's why the first result was confusing.””

I looked at Aaliyah.

“She isn't my daughter by blood.””

“No.””

“But she is my family.””

“Yes.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“And she's my daughter.””

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at Aaliyah.

For the first time since the nightmare began, something inside me became clear.

The blood test could tell us who shared DNA.

It couldn't tell us who stayed.

It couldn't tell us who held her hand during chemotherapy appointments.

Who waited outside classrooms.

Who taught her to drive.

Who stayed awake after her first heartbreak.

Who stood in the rain outside her college dorm because she'd forgotten her keys.

None of that appeared on a laboratory report.

I looked at her.

“You're my daughter.””

She started crying.

“I know.””

I pulled her into my arms.

Daniel watched us.

His eyes were wet.

After a moment, Aaliyah stepped away and walked toward him.

She hesitated.

Then she hugged him.

Daniel broke down.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

“I know.””

“I didn't know.””

“I know.””

He held her carefully.

Like he was afraid she might disappear.

Then a sound came from the hallway.

A gunshot.

Margaret dropped the flash drive.

The door shattered.

Victor stormed inside.

Derek was behind him, bleeding from his forehead.

“Marcus!””

I grabbed Aaliyah.

Victor raised his gun.

“Give me the ledger.””

Margaret stepped in front of us.

“You won't get it.””

Victor looked at her.

“You betrayed me.””

Margaret smiled.

“I betrayed Samuel first.””

She reached inside her coat.

Victor fired.

The shot struck the wall beside her.

Derek tackled Victor.

Daniel grabbed the gun.

Renee screamed.

Aaliyah pulled me toward the emergency exit.

“Dad!””

We ran.

But as we reached the stairs, Margaret shouted behind us.

“Marcus!””

I turned.

She was holding the flash drive.

Her face was covered in blood.

“Your mother left one more message.””

“What?””

Margaret threw the drive toward me.

I caught it.

“Where?””

“In the recording.””

“What recording?””

She looked at me.

“The one Evelyn made before she died.””

My breath stopped.

“She recorded the truth?””

Margaret nodded.

“All of it.””

Victor fought free from Derek.

He pointed his gun toward Margaret.

She smiled.

Then she said something that made everyone freeze.

“Tell Marcus who killed Samuel.””

Victor's face changed.

I stared at him.

“What?””

Margaret looked directly at me.

“Your father wasn't murdered by Victor.””

The hallway went silent.

Margaret whispered:

“Evelyn killed Samuel.””

Then the emergency lights came on.

And on the wall behind Margaret was a message written in red marker.

*THE WRONG WOMAN DIED SEVEN YEARS AGO.*
