Chapter 8: Locker 314
St. Catherine's had been closed for nearly fifteen years.
The hospital stood behind a chain-link fence, its windows dark and its brick walls stained by decades of rain.
I parked two streets away.
Aaliyah sat beside me.
Daniel was in the back.
Renee stared at the building through the windshield.
“This is where you were born,” she said.
Aaliyah looked at her.
“I know.””
“You've never been here.””
“No.””
I turned off the engine.
Derek wasn't with us.
He had stayed behind to slow Victor down.
I hated leaving him.
But he had insisted.
“Go,” he'd said.
“Find the truth.””
So we went.
The side entrance opened with a rusted key Daniel had kept hidden for years.
Inside, the air smelled like mildew and old paper.
Our footsteps echoed through empty corridors.
Aaliyah stayed close to me.
“You okay?””
“No.””
“Me neither.””
She gave a small smile.
“At least we're honest.””
We reached the old records wing.
Daniel stopped at a locked steel door.
“Beyond this is the basement.””
“Locker 314?””
“No.””
He pointed at a faded sign.
*ARCHIVES — AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY*
“This is where your grandmother worked.””
I looked at the sign.
“My mother spent years here.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel's answer was quiet.
“Because she was trying to undo what your father did.””
We went downstairs.
The basement was colder.
Rows of metal cabinets filled the room.
Most were empty.
Some had collapsed from rust.
At the far end stood a wall of numbered lockers.
I found 314.
It was already open.
Inside was a cardboard box.
Aaliyah whispered, “Someone's been here.””
Daniel nodded.
“They beat us.””
I opened the box.
Inside were photographs.
Birth records.
Bank statements.
And dozens of handwritten notes.
I picked up the first photograph.
My mother stood outside the hospital.
Beside her was a woman I didn't recognize.
And behind them—
Renee.
Young.
Pregnant.
I looked at Renee.
“You were here.””
She nodded.
“I was.””
“Why?””
“I was waiting for your mother.””
I pulled another photograph.
This one showed Daniel.
Then Elias.
Then Samuel.
All three men standing together.
I looked at Daniel.
“You knew Elias.””
“He was my best friend.””
“And Samuel?””
“My brother.””
“What happened between you?””
Daniel stared at the photograph.
“Your father wanted control.””
“Of what?””
“Everything.””
He picked up a folder.
“He believed family was a business.””
Aaliyah opened another document.
Her eyes widened.
“Dad.””
I walked toward her.
She handed me the paper.
It was a birth certificate.
The child's name:
*Amara Renee Bennett.*
Mother:
*Renee Bennett.*
Father:
*Daniel Hale.*
I looked at Aaliyah.
“Amara.””
She nodded.
“That was me.””
“Yes.””
She stared at the paper.
“Why did they change it?””
Before I could answer, a voice came from behind us.
“Because Amara wasn't the only name they changed.””
We turned.
A woman stood at the end of the corridor.
Gray hair.
Thin face.
Walking slowly.
Aaliyah dropped the document.
“Mom?””
Her mother nodded.
“I’m sorry.””
Aaliyah ran toward her.
They collided in an embrace.
I stood frozen.
Her mother looked at me over Aaliyah's shoulder.
“Marcus.””
I couldn't speak.
“You're alive.””
“Yes.””
“You let us believe you were dead.””
“I had to.””
“Why?””
She looked at Renee.
Then Daniel.
Then me.
“Because Samuel wasn't the only person hunting us.””
Aaliyah pulled away.
“Who was?””
Her mother looked toward the stairs.
“Someone who knew about the ledger.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Victor.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Then who?””
She looked at me.
“Your mother.””
I froze.
“My mother?””
“She wasn't protecting you from Samuel.””
She wiped a tear from her cheek.
“She was protecting Samuel from you.””
The room seemed to stop.
“What does that mean?””
“Your mother discovered the ledger.””
“When?””
“Before Aaliyah was born.””
“Then why didn't she expose him?””
“Because Samuel had leverage.””
“Over her?””
“Over you.””
I stared.
“What could he possibly have had over me? I was a child.””
“He knew your mother would sacrifice anything for you.””
Renee stepped forward.
“What did Samuel threaten?””
Aaliyah's mother looked at her.
“He threatened to reveal that Evelyn had helped falsify medical records.””
Renee's face fell.
“She could have gone to prison.””
“Yes.””
I looked at the box.
“So my mother protected Samuel because she was afraid of prison?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“She protected you.””
I stared at her.
“How?””
“Samuel told her that if the truth came out, Victor would kill you.””
Daniel whispered, “He was bluffing.””
“No.””
She looked at him.
“He wasn't.””
Silence.
Aaliyah picked up another document.
“This isn't about the ledger.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She held up a bank transfer.
“Look.””
I took it.
The account belonged to Samuel.
The recipient was—
*Marcus Hale.*
My name.
My heart stopped.
“No.””
The amount was enormous.
$250,000.
Dated ten years earlier.
The exact year I met Renee.
The exact year I began raising Aaliyah.
I stared at the transfer.
“I never received this.””
Aaliyah's mother nodded.
“I know.””
“Then where did it go?””
She pointed to another page.
A trust account.
Created in my name.
Beneficiary:
*Aaliyah Bennett.*
I couldn't breathe.
My entire life with Renee had begun around the same time.
The apartment.
The school fees.
The first car.
The medical bills.
I had believed I'd built our family through sacrifice.
Had someone been secretly funding it?
Had my entire life been manipulated?
I looked at Renee.
“Did you know?””
She started crying.
“No.””
“Did you know about the money?””
“No.””
Her mother spoke.
“Samuel arranged it.””
“Why?””
“Because he wanted you to stay.””
I felt sick.
“Stay where?””
“With Aaliyah.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“He knew Renee couldn't protect her alone. He knew Derek would eventually come back. He knew Victor would search for her.””
“So he chose me?””
“Yes.””
“He paid me to raise his granddaughter?””
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“He paid to make sure you never left.””
I looked at Aaliyah.
She looked as devastated as I felt.
“I would have stayed anyway,” I whispered.
“I know.””
“Then why?””
Her mother looked at me.
“Because Samuel didn't trust love.””
A sound echoed upstairs.
Footsteps.
Daniel reached for his cane.
“Someone's here.””
Renee whispered, “Victor?””
“No.””
The footsteps stopped.
Then a voice called from the hallway.
“Marcus?””
My blood froze.
I knew that voice.
My mother's voice.
But she had been dead for seven years.
Aaliyah's mother stared at me.
“No.””
The voice came again.
“Marcus, open the door.””
Daniel backed away.
“That isn't Evelyn.””
“Then who is it?””
He looked at me.
“The woman who taught Victor everything.””
The door handle began turning.
Aaliyah grabbed my arm.
“Dad.””
The door opened.
A woman stood there.
She had my mother's face.
My mother's eyes.
My mother's voice.
But she smiled like a stranger.
“Hello, Marcus.””
May you like
She held up a photograph.
“Did you really think Evelyn Hale was dead?””
