Chapter 6: What Samuel Did Before I Was Born

The hallway went silent.

I could hear Aaliyah breathing beside me.

Fast.

Shallow.

Derek had one hand over her shoulder, keeping her down.

Renee was crouched behind the bed.

Thomas lay on the floor near the door.

“Is he dead?”” Aaliyah whispered.

I looked toward him.

“Thomas?””

He groaned.

“I'm alive.””

Relief hit me for half a second.

Then Victor's voice came again.

“You have thirty seconds.””

Derek looked at me.

“Do you have the report?””

I held up the folder.

“Yes.””

“Don't give it to him.””

“I wasn't planning to.””

Aaliyah grabbed my sleeve.

“Dad.””

I looked at her.

“What did he mean about Mom?””

Renee closed her eyes.

I knew immediately.

There was another secret.

One they had been trying to keep from me.

“What did Samuel do to your mother?”” I asked.

Renee whispered, “Marcus…”

“What did he do?””

“I don't know everything.””

“Then tell me what you know.””

She looked at Aaliyah.

“Your mother wasn't supposed to marry you.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Samuel arranged it.””

“Arranged what?””

“Your mother's marriage.””

“To who?””

Renee hesitated.

“To Joseph.””

Aaliyah's face tightened.

“My grandfather?””

Renee nodded.

“Joseph wasn't your mother's first husband.””

I felt sick.

“Who was?””

Renee looked at me.

“Elias.””

Aaliyah stopped breathing.

“What?””

Renee continued.

“Your mother and Elias were married.””

The room went completely still.

“Then how did Derek—”

“He met her after Elias died.””

Derek looked at Renee.

“I didn't know.””

“I know.””

“You told me she was single.””

“She was legally widowed.””

I stared at them.

“Then why was Derek's name ever connected to Aaliyah?””

“Because Derek believed she was his.””

Derek's jaw tightened.

“I loved her.””

“I know.””

“But she never told me about Elias.””

“She was afraid.””

“Of Samuel?””

Renee nodded.

I looked at Aaliyah.

“Your biological father was Elias.””

She nodded slowly.

“I knew.””

“And your mother was married to him.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did she leave?””

Renee's eyes filled with tears.

“Because Samuel made her.””

Aaliyah whispered, “Why?””

“Because Elias had discovered the truth.””

I felt my fists clench.

“What truth?””

Renee looked at me.

“Samuel had arranged the death of a witness.””

I stared.

“Who?””

“Elias's friend.””

“Why?””

“Because the friend had proof of the operation.””

Derek whispered, “Victor.””

Renee nodded.

“Victor wanted the evidence.””

“And Samuel?””

“He wanted Elias silent.””

Aaliyah looked toward the door.

“So my father was killed?””

Renee shook her head.

“He was hunted.””

“That isn't an answer.””

“No.””

Renee's voice cracked.

“I don't know who fired the shot.””

The hallway remained silent.

Then Victor spoke again.

“Time's up.””

The door handle moved.

Derek grabbed a broken piece of wood.

I pushed Aaliyah behind me.

The door opened.

A man stepped inside.

Mid-sixties.

Gray hair.

Dark coat.

A scar ran from his left ear to the edge of his jaw.

Victor Cross.

He looked exactly like the photograph.

He held a gun loosely at his side.

But he wasn't looking at me.

He was looking at Aaliyah.

Then he smiled.

“Amara.””

Aaliyah froze.

I turned toward her.

“Amara?””

Victor lowered the gun.

“That's the name your mother gave you.””

Aaliyah shook her head.

“My name is Aaliyah.””

“No.””

Victor looked at me.

“Your father changed that.””

I stepped forward.

“You're not taking her anywhere.””

Victor smiled.

“You still don't understand, Marcus.””

“Then explain it.””

“I didn't come for the girl.””

“Then why are you here?””

“For what she carries.””

He pointed at the folder.

“The truth.””

I held it tighter.

Victor sighed.

“Your father spent his entire life burying that truth.””

“You knew him.””

“I knew him better than anyone.””

“Did you kill Elias?””

Victor's expression changed.

“No.””

“Who did?””

“Samuel.””

Renee gasped.

Victor continued.

“Samuel didn't shoot him.””

I stared.

“He hired someone.””

“Who?””

“Your Uncle Daniel.””

I remembered the name.

Daniel.

The man everyone had told me was dead.

I looked at Renee.

She was shaking.

“Daniel survived,” Victor said.

I turned toward him.

“Where is he?””

Victor smiled.

“Closer than you think.””

A sound came from outside.

An engine.

Headlights swept across the broken windows.

Victor glanced toward the parking lot.

“That's unfortunate.””

Derek looked at him.

“Who?””

Victor's smile disappeared.

“Daniel.””

The motel door slammed open.

A man rushed inside.

Older.

White hair.

Walking with a cane.

I stared at him.

There was something familiar about his face.

Something buried in my childhood.

A photograph.

A face beside my father.

Daniel Hale.

He looked at Victor.

“Enough.””

Victor raised his gun.

Daniel lifted his cane.

“Don't.””

For several seconds, they stared at each other.

Then Daniel looked at me.

His eyes filled with tears.

“Marcus.””

I couldn't speak.

He stepped closer.

“I've wanted to meet you for twenty-six years.””

I shook my head.

“You're supposed to be dead.””

Daniel gave a bitter smile.

“That's what your father wanted everyone to believe.””

Renee stared at him.

“You killed Elias.””

Daniel looked at her.

“No.””

“You disappeared.””

“I was hiding.””

“From Samuel?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at Aaliyah.

“Because Samuel told me if I didn't take the blame, he'd kill her.””

Aaliyah stepped forward.

“You knew my father?””

Daniel nodded.

“Elias was my friend.””

Victor lowered his gun.

“You're wasting time.””

Daniel turned.

“You should have stayed away.””

Victor laughed.

“You think you're protecting them?””

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I'm finally telling them the truth.””

He reached into his coat.

I expected another weapon.

Instead, he pulled out a small cassette tape.

Old.

Black.

Labeled in faded handwriting.

*Samuel — April 1999.*

My heart stopped.

“What is that?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your father's confession.””

Renee covered her mouth.

Daniel held the tape toward me.

“Everything is on here.””

I took it.

“What everything?””

“Why Elias died.””

“Why my mother changed Aaliyah's name.””

“Why your father erased his own brother.””

“And why you were chosen to raise Aaliyah.””

I stared at him.

“What do you mean, chosen?””

Daniel's eyes moved to Aaliyah.

“Samuel knew he couldn't control her.””

“Then why me?””

“Because he knew you would love her.””

The words hit me harder than anything else that night.

Daniel continued.

“Samuel believed that if Aaliyah grew up with you, she'd be safe.””

I shook my head.

“He knew me.””

“No.””

Daniel's voice softened.

“He knew your mother.””

I felt a chill.

“My mother?””

“Evelyn was the one who chose you.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew what Samuel had done.””

I looked down at the cassette.

“Then why didn't she tell me?””

Daniel's expression broke.

“Because she made a deal.””

“With who?””

“Samuel.””

I felt sick.

“What kind of deal?””

Daniel looked at Renee.

Then at Aaliyah.

Then finally at me.

“She agreed to hide the truth until Aaliyah turned twenty-two.””

Aaliyah's eyes widened.

“Why twenty-two?””

Daniel didn't answer.

I looked at Aaliyah.

Her birthday had been two months ago.

She had just turned twenty-two.

That meant the deadline had already passed.

My mother's letter.

The DNA tests.

Victor.

Daniel.

Everything had started moving now because Aaliyah had reached the age my mother had been waiting for.

I suddenly understood the first message.

*Check the second page.*

There was more.

Something my mother had expected us to find.

I turned to the folder.

“There has to be another page.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“Where?””

He looked at Aaliyah.

“She has it.””

Aaliyah reached slowly into her jacket.

She pulled out a folded document.

“I found this in Grandma's box.””

She handed it to me.

I opened it.

At the top was a legal document.

Below it were three names.

Samuel Hale.

Evelyn Hale.

And Marcus Hale.

My name.

I read the final sentence.

*Upon Aaliyah Bennett reaching the age of twenty-two, guardianship shall be transferred to Marcus Hale, regardless of biological relationship.*

I looked up.

My hands were shaking.

“What the hell is this?””

Daniel whispered, “The guardianship agreement.””

“I never signed this.””

“You weren't supposed to.””

“Then who signed it?””

Daniel pointed toward the bottom.

A signature.

My mother's.

And beneath it, another signature.

Aaliyah's mother.

Then I noticed the final line.

*Biological identity must remain concealed until the child reaches twenty-two, at which time the original paternal record will be released.*

I looked at Renee.

“The original paternal record.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

Her eyes shifted toward Victor.

Victor smiled.

“Not with me.””

I turned to Daniel.

“Then where?””

Daniel's face went pale.

“Samuel kept it.””

“He's dead.””

“Yes.””

“Then where did he leave it?””

Daniel looked at the cassette.

“He didn't.””

A silence followed.

Then Aaliyah's phone rang.

Everyone froze.

The caller ID showed one name.

*Mom.*

Aaliyah stared at the screen.

Her mother had been dead for three years.

She slowly answered.

“Hello?””

A woman's voice came through.

Weak.

Shaking.

But unmistakably alive.

“Aaliyah?””

Aaliyah's face went white.

“Mom?””

The woman began crying.

“I need you to listen to me.””

Aaliyah stood frozen.

“Where are you?””

“I can't tell you.””

“Mom, you're alive?””

“I don't have much time.””

Aaliyah's eyes filled with tears.

Then her mother whispered the words that changed everything.

“Your biological father wasn't Elias.””

The line went dead.

Aaliyah looked at me.

And for the first time in ten years, she didn't call me Dad.

May you like

She simply whispered my name.

“Marcus…”
