Chapter 9: The Truth She Buried
For a moment, nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Vanessa.
Not even Mason.
The only sound in the room was the quiet hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen.
A normal sound.
A sound that didn’t belong in a moment like this.
Mason stared at his mother.
“What did you say?””
Vanessa’s face crumpled.
“Mason…”
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“You said he was my dad.””
She stepped toward him.
But he stepped back.
That hurt more than anything I had seen that night.
A child rejecting the person who was supposed to make him feel safe.
“I raised you,” Vanessa whispered.
“That’s not what I asked.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“Who is my dad?””
Vanessa looked at me.
Like she wanted me to disappear.
Like somehow I was the reason the truth existed.
I couldn’t understand how someone could look at their own child and still choose a lie.
“Mason deserves an answer.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Then she sat down.
For the first time since I met her, she looked small.
Not innocent.
Not forgiven.
Just small.
“His name was Daniel.””
Mason wiped his face.
“Daniel who?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Daniel Thompson.””
My blood turned cold.
I felt like the room tilted.
“No.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I didn’t know how to tell you.””
I stared at her.
“What did you just say?””
“Daniel was your brother.””
Silence.
Complete silence.
My brother.
The word didn’t make sense.
My brother Daniel had died fifteen years earlier.
A car accident.
A tragedy my family never recovered from.
I remembered standing beside his grave.
I remembered my parents crying.
I remembered promising myself I would never let his memory disappear.
And now Vanessa was telling me she had a child with him.
Mason looked between us.
“Dad?””
I couldn’t answer.
I couldn’t breathe.
Vanessa continued quietly.
“I met Daniel before he died.””
“When?””
“Months before the accident.””
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
“It’s not.””
“You knew my family?””
She nodded.
“I knew about you.””
My hands curled into fists.
“You knew me?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because when I saw you again years later, I thought it was a sign.””
“A sign?””
She laughed weakly.
“I thought life was giving me another chance.””
I stared at her.
“You followed me.””
“Yes.””
“You found out where I worked.””
“Yes.””
“You built this entire relationship around a lie.””
She didn’t deny it.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“When?””
She looked down.
“Never.””
The honesty hurt more than another lie.
Mason was crying silently.
“Was Daniel really my father?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then why did you let Ethan pretend?””
Her face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Because Ethan knew.””
“Knew what?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“He knew Daniel was your brother.””
I felt a chill.
“What does that have to do with anything?””
“Ethan hated your family.””
“Why?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she whispered:
“Because Daniel was the reason Ethan went to prison.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“Daniel testified against him.””
The pieces started moving.
The missing pieces.
The secrets.
The anger.
The obsession.
Ethan wasn’t just connected to Vanessa.
He was connected to my family.
“What did Daniel testify about?””
Vanessa looked toward Mason.
“I don’t want him hearing this.””
Mason stood straighter.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
“I’m tired of people deciding what I can handle.””
His voice shook.
“But I deserve the truth.””
I looked at him.
And I realized something.
This boy had spent years protecting Lily.
Now he was finally asking someone to protect him.
Vanessa took a deep breath.
“Ethan was involved in illegal things.””
“What kind of things?””
She didn’t answer.
I already knew.
“He hurt people.””
“Yes.””
“And Daniel found out.””
“Yes.””
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
From Ethan.
I opened it.
A photo appeared.
A hospital document.
Daniel Thompson.
My brother’s name.
The date was two weeks before his accident.
And underneath it was a note.
*Your brother didn’t die because of a car crash.*
My heart stopped.
I looked at Vanessa.
She saw the screen.
And her face went white.
“You knew.””
She whispered:
“I knew something was wrong.””
“Something?””
I slammed the phone on the table.
“My brother died.””
“I know.””
“You let me believe it was an accident.””
“I was afraid.””
“Of Ethan?””
She nodded.
“But also of the truth.””
“What truth?””
Vanessa looked at Mason.
Then at Lily.
Then finally at me.
“Daniel wasn’t the only person Ethan wanted to silence.””
I felt a cold wave pass through me.
“Who else?””
Her lips parted.
But before she could answer, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man’s voice spoke.
Older.
Calm.
Confident.
Ethan.
“Michael.””
I froze.
“You have questions.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Yes.””
“Good.””
His voice was almost amused.
“Because Vanessa has only told you the parts that make her look like a victim.””
My grip tightened.
“What do you want?””
A pause.
Then:
“I want you to know the truth about your brother.””
“And why should I believe you?””
“Because I have proof.””
The call continued.
And then Ethan said the words that changed everything.
“Your brother didn’t die because of me.””
I looked around the room.
“At the time of his death…”
May you like
A pause.
“He was trying to expose Vanessa.””
