Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew My Name

“It says Mom knew you before you knew her.””

Mason’s voice echoed in my head long after the call ended.

I sat in my car outside my brother David’s house, staring through the windshield at nothing.

The street was quiet.

Normal.

That was the strangest part.

The world outside kept moving like my entire life hadn’t just cracked open.

A woman I married.

A child I loved.

A family I thought I built.

And now I was discovering that my wife had secrets buried beneath every corner of our home.

I walked inside.

Mason was sitting on the couch beside Lily.

The moment Lily saw me, she jumped up and ran into my arms.

“Daddy.””

I hugged her tightly.

“I’m here.””

Mason stood nearby, holding a small photograph.

His face looked older than seven years old.

“What did you find, buddy?””

He handed it to me.

The picture was old.

Not old enough to be from before smartphones, but old enough that the edges had started turning yellow.

It showed me.

Not the current me.

A younger version.

Maybe ten years ago.

I was standing outside a coffee shop where I used to work part-time.

I remembered that day.

I remembered that jacket.

I remembered taking that photo because a coworker thought the sunset looked nice behind me.

But I had never seen this copy.

I flipped it over.

My heart stopped.

Written on the back were four words.

*“He doesn’t remember me.””*

Below it was a date.

A date from twelve years ago.

Before I met Vanessa.

I looked at Mason.

“Where did you find this?””

“In Mom’s closet.””

“Where exactly?””

“In a box behind her clothes.””

Lily looked up at me.

“Daddy, is Mommy mad?””

The question hurt more than anything.

Because my daughter was not asking if her mother was in trouble.

She was asking if she was about to get hurt again.

“No, sweetheart.””

I knelt down.

“You’re safe.””

Mason looked away.

“But are we?””

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

He swallowed.

“Mom always said if anyone found out about the past, everything would disappear.””

My chest tightened.

“What past?””

Mason shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

Before I could ask more, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

The same one.

I answered immediately.

“Who are you?””

The woman’s voice came through.

“Michael, you need to leave that house.””

I stood.

“Who is this?””

“You already know my name.””

“No, I don’t.””

“Yes, you do.””

My stomach turned.

“Rachel?””

“No.””

The woman paused.

“My name is Claire.””

The room suddenly felt colder.

“Claire who?””

“You knew me before Vanessa.””

I gripped the phone.

“I’ve never met you.””

“That’s what she wanted you to believe.””

I looked at the children.

Then stepped into the kitchen.

“What are you talking about?””

Claire sighed.

“Twelve years ago, you helped me.””

“Helped you with what?””

“You stopped a man from hurting me.””

I froze.

Memories flashed.

A rainy night.

A parking lot.

A woman crying.

A man shouting.

I remembered stepping between them.

I remembered calling the police.

But I never knew what happened afterward.

“I don’t understand.””

Claire’s voice became softer.

“Vanessa was there that night.””

My blood ran cold.

“She saw you.””

“She saw me help you.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she was with the man you stopped.””

The phone nearly slipped from my hand.

“What?””

“His name was Ethan Carter.””

I sat down slowly.

Mason’s biological father.

The same man Vanessa claimed was dead.

“The night you saved me,” Claire continued, “Ethan disappeared.””

I whispered:

“And Vanessa blamed me?””

“No.””

Claire’s voice dropped.

“She became obsessed with you.””

A terrible silence followed.

“Obsessed?””

“She spent years trying to find you.””

I looked at the photograph.

The one hidden in her closet.

The one she kept before I even knew her.

“Why would she do that?””

Claire answered quietly.

“Because she didn’t want revenge.””

May you like

A pause.

“She wanted the life she thought you owed her.””
