Chapter 4: The Name on the Paper
The next morning, I met the housekeeper in a quiet coffee shop across town.
Her name was Rachel.
She looked nervous the entire time.
Like she expected Vanessa to walk through the door.
“I should have told you months ago,” Rachel said.
“Why didn’t you?””
She looked down.
“Because I needed the job.””
I didn’t judge her.
I needed answers.
“What does Mason’s father have to do with this?””
Rachel pulled a folder from her bag.
“I found this while cleaning Vanessa’s office.””
Inside was a stack of papers.
The first page was a custody agreement.
The second page had a name.
A name I recognized.
My hands went cold.
“Ethan Carter?””
Rachel nodded.
“That’s Mason’s biological father.””
I stared at the page.
“Vanessa told me he was dead.””
Rachel looked at me.
“He’s not.””
The world seemed to stop.
“Where is he?””
“I don’t know.””
“Then why hide this?””
Rachel hesitated.
“Because Vanessa was afraid.””
“Of him?””
“No.””
She pushed another paper toward me.
“Of you finding out.””
I read the document.
It wasn’t about custody.
It was a letter.
A letter Vanessa had written months before our wedding.
My eyes moved across the page.
And every sentence made my stomach twist.
She hadn’t married me because she loved me.
She married me because she needed stability.
A house.
Money.
Someone to raise Mason.
But then I saw something I didn’t expect.
A sentence that made no sense.
*Michael can never know what happened the night Ethan disappeared.*
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Rachel swallowed.
“I don’t know.””
My phone rang.
It was Mason.
I answered immediately.
“Hey buddy.””
His voice was shaking.
“Dad?””
“What happened?””
“I found something.””
“What?””
“I was looking in Mom’s closet.””
My heart raced.
“Mason, where are you?””
“At Uncle David’s house.””
“Okay. What did you find?””
There was a pause.
Then he said:
“A picture.””
“What picture?””
“The one Mom always hides.””
“Of what?””
His voice became a whisper.
“Of you.””
I frowned.
“Me?””
“No.””
A long pause.
“Dad… it’s a picture of you before you met Mom.””
I stood frozen.
“How would she have that?””
Mason didn’t answer.
Instead, I heard him move.
Then he said:
“There’s writing on the back.””
“What does it say?””
His breathing changed.
Like he had just realized something terrible.
“Dad…”
“What?””
“It says…”
The line went silent.
“Mason?””
Then his voice came back.
May you like
Barely a whisper.
“It says Mom knew you before you knew her.””
