Chapter 9: The Test That Changed Everything

The envelope arrived three days after Caroline was arrested.

No return address.

No name.

Just my name written across the front.

Daniel.

I stared at it for almost a full minute before opening it.

Because after everything I had learned, I knew one thing.

Every envelope in my life carried a secret.

Every piece of paper came with a price.

Lena sat across from me at the kitchen table.

Thomas stood near the window.

Marcus refused to come inside.

He said he needed time to face what he had done.

I understood.

Because everyone in that house was carrying guilt.

Except Ethan.

He was upstairs.

Doing homework.

Living the normal childhood we had almost destroyed.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single document.

A DNA test.

My hands froze.

The first name was mine.

Daniel Carter.

The second name was Ethan Carter.

I stared at the result.

The words were there.

The answer everyone had been hiding.

I couldn’t breathe.

Lena reached for my hand.

“Daniel…”

I pulled away.

Not because I hated her.

Because I was afraid.

Afraid of what those words would say.

Afraid that the last ten years of my life would suddenly become something I couldn’t trust.

I forced myself to read.

The result was not what I expected.

Not even close.

Probability of biological relationship:

99.99%.

I blinked.

Once.

Twice.

Then I looked up.

“What?””

Nobody spoke.

Thomas looked stunned.

Marcus, who had just walked through the front door, stopped when he saw my face.

“What happened?””

I held up the paper.

“Explain this.””

Thomas took it.

His eyes moved quickly.

Then his face changed.

“No.””

I stood.

“What?””

He read it again.

“No, that’s impossible.””

My anger rose.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I stepped closer.

“You all knew enough to tell me I wasn’t his father.””

Thomas looked at me.

“We believed—”

“You believed?””

My voice echoed through the room.

“You built an entire story around something you believed?””

Lena started crying.

“I didn’t know.””

I turned toward her.

“You didn’t know anything.””

The words hurt both of us.

But they were true.

For years, she had lived inside a mystery.

For years, I had lived inside a lie.

And somehow, Ethan had been caught between us.

Marcus took the paper from Thomas.

He read it.

Then sat down.

“My God.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He looked up.

“Dad knew.””

The room became silent.

“What do you mean?””

Marcus folded the paper.

“Our father knew.””

Thomas shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked devastated.

“He knew Ethan was Daniel’s son.””

I stared.

“That makes no sense.””

Marcus nodded.

“It does when you understand the plan.””

I hated that word.

Plan.

Everything had been a plan.

“Explain.””

Marcus took a breath.

“Dad didn’t want Ethan to be raised by Thomas.””

“Why?””

“Because Thomas was reckless.””

Thomas looked away.

“And Dad knew you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“My own father used me.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His answer was quiet.

“Because he knew you would love a child that wasn’t biologically yours.””

I looked at the stairs.

Where my son was sitting.

My son.

The truth finally settled.

Not because of blood.

Because of everything else.

The first time he called me Daddy.

The first time he held my hand after falling.

The first time he said he wanted to be just like me.

No document could erase that.

But there was still one question.

I looked at Thomas.

“Then why did everyone think you were his father?””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“Because Caroline wanted us to.””

“Why?””

“Because she wanted control.””

Lena whispered:

“She knew if Ethan was connected to Thomas, she could manipulate everything.””

I looked at the DNA test.

“So this was all based on a lie.””

Thomas nodded.

“A lie that started with one mistake.””

“What mistake?””

He looked at me.

“The mistake of thinking people could be controlled forever.””

That night, I sat beside Ethan’s bed.

He was asleep.

Peaceful.

Unaware that the adults around him had spent years fighting over truths he never asked for.

I brushed his hair back.

He opened his eyes.

“Daddy?””

“Hey, buddy.””

“Are you mad?””

The question broke my heart.

“Why would I be mad?””

He shrugged.

“Because everyone keeps saying things are changing.””

I sat beside him.

“Some things are changing.””

His eyes filled with worry.

“Am I going away?””

I immediately shook my head.

“No.””

“Promise?””

I held his hand.

“Listen to me, Ethan. Nothing changes this.””

“What?””

“You’re my son.””

He looked at me.

“But Uncle Thomas?””

I smiled sadly.

“Uncle Thomas is part of your story.””

I touched his chest gently.

“But I’m the one who was there for every chapter.””

A small smile appeared.

That night, after Ethan fell asleep again, I went downstairs.

Lena was waiting.

“We need to talk.””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

For the first time in weeks, we sat together without hiding.

“I hurt you,” she said.

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

I looked at her.

“But you also saved me.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t deserve that.””

“Maybe not.””

She looked down.

“But Ethan deserves the truth.””

I agreed.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something made me answer.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through.

Calm.

Older.

Familiar.

“Daniel.””

My entire body froze.

Because I knew that voice.

I had heard it before.

But it was impossible.

“Who is this?””

The man laughed softly.

“You really thought Caroline was the beginning?””

My blood went cold.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“I’m the reason your father started everything.””

The call ended.

I looked at Lena.

Then Thomas.

Nobody spoke.

May you like

Because everyone knew.

The nightmare wasn’t over.
