Chapter 7: The Woman Behind the Lie
The photograph stayed on the kitchen table all night.
I couldn’t stop looking at it.
A face I knew.
A person I had welcomed into my home.
A person who had hugged my son.
A person who had smiled at me while hiding something enormous.
“Who took this?””
I asked Thomas.
He didn’t answer immediately.
“I did.””
“Why were you watching her?””
“Because I knew she was involved.””
My jaw tightened.
“You’ve been spying on my family?””
Thomas looked down.
“I’ve been protecting it.””
That phrase again.
Protecting.
Everyone used it.
Nobody realized it sounded like an excuse.
“Her name.””
Thomas looked at the photograph.
“Caroline.””
I felt my stomach twist.
Caroline.
Lena’s closest friend.
The woman who had been there when Ethan was born.
The woman who brought food after we came home from the hospital.
The woman who babysat Ethan when Lena and I needed help.
“No.””
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“She was closer to the truth than anyone.””
I stood.
“I need to talk to Lena.””
Thomas grabbed my arm.
“Not yet.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because if Caroline knows we figured it out, she’ll run.””
I pulled away.
“She has my son’s life involved.””
“I know.””
“And you want me to wait?””
Thomas looked at me.
“I want you to understand what she did first.””
I hated that he was right.
So I listened.
Thomas explained everything.
Years ago, after Lena learned she might never have children, she became close with Caroline.
Caroline knew about Lena’s medical struggles.
She knew how badly Lena wanted a family.
She knew how desperate she was.
And according to Thomas, Caroline used that desperation.
“She convinced Lena that there was another option,” Thomas said.
“What option?””
“A secret arrangement.””
I frowned.
“Between who?””
Thomas looked at me.
“Between Lena and me.””
The words felt like another explosion.
I stood silently.
“No.””
Thomas nodded.
“But Lena never knew the entire truth.””
“What truth?””
“That Caroline was manipulating everyone.””
I walked to the window.
Outside, the backyard was dark.
The same place where I found my son terrified.
“How does my father fit into this?””
Thomas sighed.
“Your father knew about the arrangement.””
My chest tightened.
“He approved?””
“He created the plan.””
I turned around.
“What?””
Thomas’s voice was low.
“He believed our family needed someone to continue the name.””
I shook my head.
“That’s insane.””
“Yes.””
“And Lena?””
“She thought she was helping create a family.””
I looked toward the stairs.
Where Ethan slept.
The boy who had become the center of a decades-old secret.
“And me?””
Thomas looked at me.
“You were the missing piece.””
I stared.
“What?””
“Your father chose you because you had something nobody else did.””
“What?””
Thomas answered:
“A heart.””
The words caught me off guard.
“He knew you would love Ethan regardless.””
I looked away.
Because that hurt.
My father had manipulated my entire life.
But somehow, the one good thing that came from it was my son.
The next morning, Lena sat across from me at the kitchen table.
For once, there were no secrets between us.
Only pain.
“Did you love me?”” I asked.
She looked down.
“Yes.””
“Did you marry me because of Ethan?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“No.””
“Then why?””
“Because you were the first person who made me feel like I wasn’t broken.””
I looked away.
That answer hurt.
Because part of me believed her.
But another part wondered how much of my life had been built on lies.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She whispered:
“Because every time I tried, something happened.””
“What?””
She hesitated.
Then said:
“Caroline threatened me.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What did she threaten?””
Lena looked toward the front door.
“She said if I told you, Ethan would disappear.””
My blood ran cold.
“She threatened my son?””
Lena nodded.
“She said she had proof that would make me lose custody.””
I stood.
“Where is that proof?””
Lena shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
A phone buzzed on the table.
Everyone froze.
It wasn’t mine.
It wasn’t Lena’s.
It was Thomas’s.
He looked at the screen.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
“What is it?””
Thomas turned the phone toward us.
A message.
One sentence.
May you like
One warning.
“Stop digging, or the boy learns who his real father is.””
