Chapter 2: The Secret My Wife Hid

I stared at the photograph until my vision blurred.

My wife, Lena, was standing beside a man I had never seen before.

But that wasn’t the part that made my chest tighten.

It was the way she looked at him.

She wasn’t smiling like she smiled with coworkers.

She wasn’t standing beside him like a stranger.

She looked comfortable.

Like someone who had known him for years.

And the worst part?

The man looked familiar.

I just couldn’t place him.

“Daddy?””

Ethan’s voice pulled me back.

I quickly turned the photo over again.

The words were still there.

Your brother knows the truth.

I felt cold.

Marcus.

My own brother.

I had trusted him with my family while I was gone.

I had asked him to check on Ethan when Lena worked late.

I had thanked him for being there.

And now I was standing in my hallway holding proof that he had been hiding something from me.

I placed the photo on top of the box.

“Ethan, I need you to go upstairs for a minute.””

His face changed.

“No.””

“Buddy—”

“I don’t want to leave you.””

That broke something inside me.

A child should never sound like he was afraid of being abandoned.

I crouched down.

“Listen to me. Nobody is taking you anywhere. Nobody is hurting you. I promise.””

He searched my face.

“Promise?””

“Promise.””

He slowly walked upstairs.

But he kept looking back.

Like he expected someone to follow him.

When he disappeared, I turned around.

Marcus was still standing there.

“Talk.””

He looked at the box.

Then at me.

“I can explain.””

“That’s what people say when they don’t want to tell the truth.””

His jaw tightened.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then help me understand.””

Silence.

I stepped closer.

“What is this?””

Marcus rubbed his face.

“You should ask Lena.””

My stomach dropped.

“Where is my wife?””

He didn’t answer.

“Marcus.””

“She left.””

The room felt like it tilted.

“What?””

“She left three weeks ago.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

“She packed a bag.””

“No.””

“She said she needed time.””

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because my brain refused to accept it.

“You’re telling me my wife disappeared three weeks ago, and nobody thought to call me?””

Marcus looked away.

“She didn’t want you contacted.””

The anger that rose in me was almost physical.

“She didn’t want me contacted?””

My voice became quieter.

“That’s what you’re telling me?””

Marcus didn’t respond.

I picked up one of the documents from the box.

It was a legal agreement.

My name was on it.

Lena’s name was on it.

And another name.

A name I didn’t recognize.

“What is this?””

Marcus moved forward.

“Don’t read that.””

I looked up.

“Why?””

“Because once you know, you can’t pretend anymore.””

Those words terrified me.

I unfolded the paper.

The first sentence made my hands go cold.

It was a custody document.

But it wasn’t about Ethan.

It was about another child.

A child I knew nothing about.

I looked at Marcus.

“What is this?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Lena had a life before you.””

Everyone has a past.

I knew that.

But this felt different.

This felt like a door had opened into a room that had always been inside my house.

A room I was never supposed to enter.

“She told me everything was over,” Marcus said quietly.

“Everything?””

He looked at the papers.

“She told me she left that part of her life behind.””

I grabbed his arm.

“You knew?””

His eyes dropped.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt more than I expected.

“You knew my wife had secrets.””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

Marcus pulled away.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You don’t protect someone by letting them live a lie.””

Marcus looked toward the stairs.

Then lowered his voice.

“Your son knows more than you think.””

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?””

Before he could answer, a sound came from upstairs.

A floorboard.

Then another.

Ethan appeared at the top of the stairs.

His face was pale.

“Daddy…”

I turned.

“What is it?””

He slowly walked down.

His eyes were fixed on the papers.

“I saw Mommy crying when she left.””

My throat tightened.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

He looked down.

“Because Uncle Marcus told me Mommy would get in trouble if I talked.””

I looked at Marcus.

His face went completely white.

“What did you tell my son?””

Marcus stepped back.

“Nothing like that.””

Ethan shook his head.

“He said if I opened the box, bad things would happen.””

The room became silent.

I looked at the locked box.

Then at my brother.

Then back at my son.

“Marcus…”

He whispered:

“There’s something you need to know about Lena.””

I waited.

But before he could continue, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

And the color drained from his face.

I saw the name.

The name that made him afraid.

May you like

The name of the person who had just called.

Lena.
