Chapter 9: The Letter Beneath the Grave

Margaret was in surgery when Claire arrived at the hospital's emergency department.

Nathan had insisted on coming despite Dr. Hayes's objections.

He was pale and weak, but he refused to stay behind.

“My mother is in there,” he told the doctor.

“I'm not going anywhere.””

Claire held his arm as they walked toward the waiting room.

Detective Lawson was already there.

She stood near a vending machine, speaking quietly to two uniformed officers.

When she saw them, she ended the conversation.

“Mrs. Bennett?””

“Is she alive?””

Rebecca hesitated.

“She's undergoing emergency surgery. The doctors are doing everything they can.””

Nathan sat heavily in a chair.

“Michael did this.””

Rebecca nodded.

“He was arrested at your mother's house, but we haven't established whether he had an accomplice.””

Claire stared.

“He was in police custody?””

“Yes.””

“Then how could he hurt Margaret?””

“He wasn't the person who stabbed her.””

Nathan looked up.

“What?””

Rebecca opened her notebook.

“Someone entered the house before the officers arrived. We believe that person was looking for the document your mother found.””

“Who?””

“We're investigating.””

Nathan clenched his jaw.

“Then find them.””

Rebecca pulled out a photograph.

It showed a dark-haired man leaving Margaret's house.

“Do you recognize him?””

Nathan studied it.

Then his expression changed.

“Arthur's driver.””

Claire leaned closer.

“Arthur Whitmore's driver?””

Nathan nodded.

“His name is Paul. He used to deliver documents to our office.””

Rebecca immediately called her team.

“Find Paul Henderson. He's a person of interest in an attempted murder investigation.””

Nathan stared at the photograph.

“Arthur knows about the document.””

Rebecca nodded.

“And if he knows Michael has been arrested, he may be trying to eliminate anything connecting him to the case.””

Claire sat beside Nathan.

For a moment, she couldn't speak.

She thought about Margaret's trembling hands.

The way she had cried after admitting she signed the guardianship papers.

The way she had held Ellie at the funeral.

She wasn't innocent.

But she was still family.

And she might die because she had finally chosen to tell the truth.

At 2:16 p.m., the surgeon emerged.

Nathan jumped to his feet.

“Doctor?””

The surgeon removed his mask.

“She's alive.””

Claire covered her mouth.

Nathan grabbed the wall.

“Thank God.””

“She lost a significant amount of blood. The knife missed several major organs, but she remains in critical condition.””

“Can we see her?””

“Not yet. We need to monitor her.””

Nathan nodded.

Then he looked at Claire.

“She has to make it.””

Claire squeezed his hand.

“She will.””

But Rebecca was already walking toward them.

“There's something else.””

Nathan looked at her.

“What now?””

“We recovered your mother's phone from beneath the sofa. The recording of Michael's arrest is intact.””

“Good.””

“But there's another video.””

Rebecca turned the screen toward them.

The footage showed Margaret standing in the living room before Michael arrived.

She was speaking to someone.

A man stood beside the fireplace.

Claire leaned closer.

“That's Arthur.””

Rebecca nodded.

The recording had no sound at first.

Then the audio became clearer.

Arthur was speaking.

“Michael is losing control. You need to convince Nathan to sign the documents before the trust becomes active.””

Margaret shook her head.

“He won't sign.””

Arthur sighed.

“Then we have another option.””

“What option?””

Arthur stepped closer.

“Claire.””

Margaret looked horrified.

“Leave her out of this.””

“She's the weakness. If she is declared unfit, the shares can be transferred.””

“And Ellie?””

Arthur smiled.

“Children are easier to manage than adults.””

Margaret stepped backward.

“I won't help you.””

Arthur's expression hardened.

“Then you should hope Nathan never discovers what happened twenty years ago.””

The recording ended.

Claire felt sick.

Nathan stared at the screen.

“What happened twenty years ago?””

Rebecca looked at him.

“That's what we're trying to establish.””

Nathan shook his head.

“My father died in a car accident.””

“According to the original report.””

“According to everyone.””

Rebecca leaned closer.

“Your mother's recording suggests Arthur knew something about it.””

Nathan looked at Claire.

Then back at Rebecca.

“Get me the original report.””

Rebecca nodded.

“I'll request it.””

Nathan's voice dropped.

“And find out what really happened to my father.””

At 4:30 p.m., Dr. Hayes finally allowed Nathan to return to his room.

Claire stayed beside him.

Ellie had been taken to Margaret's sister's house for the afternoon.

Before leaving, she had hugged Nathan tightly.

“Daddy, Grandma is going to be okay, right?””

Nathan kissed her.

“We're going to do everything we can.””

Ellie touched his face.

“Don't go away again.””

Nathan closed his eyes.

“Never, princess.””

Now, with the hospital room quiet, Claire opened her father's old leather notebook.

She had been reading the same entry repeatedly.

The original deed must remain protected.

There was another sentence beneath it.

If the time comes, Claire must know the truth about her birth.

Claire stopped.

She read it again.

Then she looked at Nathan.

“What does this mean?””

Nathan turned.

“What?””

She showed him the page.

He stared.

For several seconds, he didn't speak.

Then he whispered:

“Your father was supposed to tell you.””

“Tell me what?””

Nathan rubbed his forehead.

“Claire, I don't know how to explain this.””

“Try.””

He looked toward the door.

“Your father wasn't only my father's lawyer.””

Claire frowned.

“I know. You said he helped establish the trust.””

“He also handled the legal arrangements after Michael disappeared.””

“And?””

Nathan took a breath.

“He helped your mother.””

Claire felt her heart tighten.

“My mother died when I was little.””

“I know.””

“What does she have to do with Michael?””

Nathan stared at the ceiling.

“Your mother was Michael's sister.””

The room went silent.

Claire slowly lowered the notebook.

“What?””

“Her maiden name was Bennett.””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

“Your grandfather was Robert Collins. Your mother was Catherine Bennett.””

Claire stood.

“My father told me she died when I was five.””

“She did.””

“Then why didn't he tell me?””

Nathan looked at her.

“Because he wanted you to grow up away from this family.””

Claire backed away.

“Are you saying I'm related to Michael?””

Nathan nodded.

“Your mother was his younger sister.””

Claire felt as though the floor had disappeared.

The man who had threatened her daughter was her uncle.

The man who had tried to steal her husband's company was part of her mother's family.

And the woman who had helped him was connected to her through a history she had never known.

Claire sat down.

“Why did my father hide this?””

Nathan took her hand.

“Because Michael was already dangerous when your mother married Robert.””

Claire looked at the photograph on the bedside table.

It showed her mother holding her as a baby.

Her mother's face was young and beautiful.

Claire had spent her whole life believing her mother's death was a tragedy caused by illness.

Now she wondered whether that story had been another lie.

“Was my mother murdered?””

Nathan didn't answer.

That was enough.

At 6:05 p.m., Detective Lawson returned.

She carried a large folder.

“Mrs. Bennett, we have the original accident report from your mother's death.””

Claire stood immediately.

“What does it say?””

Rebecca placed the folder on the table.

“Your mother died in a single-car accident outside Atlanta. The vehicle struck a concrete barrier.””

Claire stared.

“That was twenty years ago.””

“Yes.””

“Why are we looking at it now?””

Rebecca opened the report.

“Because the original investigator was Arthur Whitmore.””

Nathan closed his eyes.

Claire looked at the document.

There was a signature at the bottom.

Arthur Whitmore.

And beneath it, a handwritten note.

Driver's death consistent with loss of control. No further investigation recommended.

Claire shook her head.

“My father never said anything.””

Rebecca turned another page.

“There's a second report. It was never filed.””

“What does it say?””

Rebecca pointed to a paragraph.

A witness had reported seeing another vehicle following Catherine Collins shortly before the accident.

The witness had also identified a man standing beside the damaged car.

The man's name was Michael Bennett.

Claire's mouth went dry.

“Michael killed his own sister?””

Rebecca nodded slowly.

“It's a possibility we're investigating.””

Nathan stared at the report.

“That's why he wanted the trust.””

Claire looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

“Your mother was entitled to a portion of the family estate. When she died, her interest passed to you.””

Claire's eyes widened.

“Me?””

Nathan nodded.

“Your father never told you because he feared Michael would come after you.””

Rebecca closed the folder.

“And now we know why Michael has been so desperate to locate the original deed.””

Claire looked down.

The truth was becoming more horrifying with every discovery.

She wasn't just married into the Bennett family.

She was part of it.

And her daughter had inherited a claim from both sides.

At 7:12 p.m., a nurse entered carrying a sealed envelope.

“Mrs. Bennett?””

Claire turned.

“Yes?””

“This was delivered to the hospital for you.””

“Who brought it?””

“I don't know. It was left at reception.””

Claire examined the envelope.

Her father's handwriting was on the front.

*For Claire, when the truth can no longer be hidden.*

Her hands began shaking.

She opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter.

My dearest Claire,

If you are reading this, then Michael has returned, and I have failed to keep you away from the danger surrounding the Bennett family.

I need you to understand that your mother did not die because of an accident. She discovered that Michael was stealing from his father and planned to expose him.

She came to me because she was afraid.

I promised her I would protect you.

Claire stopped reading.

Her eyes blurred.

Nathan reached for her hand.

“Keep going.””

She wiped her cheeks.

Your mother left behind more than her inheritance. She left a second child.

Claire frowned.

She read the sentence again.

A second child.

Her breath caught.

Nathan leaned closer.

“What?””

Claire looked at him.

“My mother had another child?””

The letter continued.

I arranged for the baby to be placed with a family who could keep him safe. I never told you because I believed the separation was necessary.

Claire's fingers trembled.

His name is Daniel.

She stopped.

The letter slipped from her hands.

Nathan stared.

“Daniel?””

Claire nodded.

“My father says Daniel is my brother.””

Nathan looked horrified.

The man who had spent years stealing from the company.

The man who had helped Michael destroy Nathan's life.

The man who had signed the guardianship petition against Claire.

Was her mother's son.

Her own brother.

Claire picked up the letter again.

There was one final paragraph.

Claire, if Daniel has returned to the Bennett family, do not assume he knows the truth. Michael raised him to believe he was abandoned. He may be dangerous, but he is also a victim of the same lies that destroyed your mother.

Claire covered her mouth.

Nathan stared at the ceiling.

“That's why Michael wanted control of Ellie.””

Claire looked at him.

“What?””

“Daniel isn't just his son. He's your mother's son. If the original trust deed confirms your mother's inheritance, Daniel may have a claim too.””

Claire shook her head.

“But why would he hurt me?””

Nathan didn't answer.

Rebecca took the letter.

“We need to verify every part of this.””

Claire looked toward the door.

Then her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

“Hello?””

A familiar voice spoke.

“Claire?””

Her heart stopped.

It was Daniel.

“Where are you?””

“Somewhere your husband can't reach me.””

Claire tightened her grip on the phone.

“What do you want?””

Daniel was silent for a moment.

Then he whispered:

“I found out what Michael did to our mother.””

Claire froze.

“What?””

“He killed her.””

“I know.””

“No, Claire. You don't.””

His voice cracked.

“He didn't just cause the accident. He took her body and buried her under a false name.””

Claire felt sick.

“Why are you telling me this?””

“Because I'm going to find him.””

“Daniel, listen to me. The police are looking for you.””

“I don't care.””

“Then surrender. Tell them everything.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You still think I'm the villain.””

“You helped him.””

“I thought I was reclaiming my father's company!””

“Your father?””

Daniel went quiet.

Then he whispered:

“I know about our mother, Claire.””

A pause.

“And I know what she left behind.””

“What?””

“The original trust deed isn't at your father's grave.””

Claire looked at Nathan.

“Where is it?””

Daniel's voice dropped.

“Your mother took it with her.””

Claire's blood ran cold.

“That's impossible.””

“No. It isn't.””

He took a shaky breath.

“Tomorrow morning, I'm going to take you to her grave.””

Then the call ended.

Rebecca immediately reached for the phone.

“Can you trace him?””

An officer began working on it.

Nathan grabbed Claire's hand.

“Don't go.””

Claire looked at him.

“He knows something.””

“He's dangerous.””

“He may be my brother.””

Nathan closed his eyes.

“And Michael is his father.””

Claire looked down at the letter.

Her father's final words remained visible.

He may be dangerous, but he is also a victim.

Then another message appeared.

It was from Daniel.

A photograph.

A cemetery headstone.

The name engraved on it was:

*CATHERINE BENNETT COLLINS.*

Beneath the photograph was a final message.

Come alone, Claire. There's something buried with our mother that will change everything.

Rebecca took the phone.

“No one is going anywhere alone.””

Claire looked at the photograph.

Then at Nathan.

For the first time, she understood that the truth about her family might be even more dangerous than the men trying to destroy it.

May you like

Because if Daniel was telling the truth, their mother had left behind a secret that had survived twenty years.

And tomorrow, Claire was going to find out why.
