Chapter 7: The Woman Who Changed Her Name
“I'm Michael Bennett's wife.””
Claire stared at the woman standing in the storage room.
The words seemed to echo between the concrete walls.
Vanessa Cole—or Evelyn, whatever her real name was—placed her handbag on a cardboard box.
Claire tightened her grip on the leather notebook.
“Don't come any closer.””
Evelyn raised both hands.
“I didn't come here to hurt you.””
“You were in my husband's hospital room.””
“I was trying to stop Michael.””
“You were holding a syringe!””
“I was trying to make sure Nathan didn't say something before I could explain.””
Claire almost laughed.
“Explain? My husband was buried alive. My daughter was photographed without our knowledge.
Someone tried to steal our family documents. And you want to explain?””
Evelyn lowered her hands.
“I know how this looks.””
“It looks like you're involved in everything.””
“I'm involved in something much older than Nathan's accident.””
Claire reached for her phone.
Evelyn noticed.
“Don't call the police yet.””
“Give me one good reason.””
“Because the person you need to arrest isn't Michael.””
Claire stopped.
“Who is it?””
Evelyn glanced at the notebook.
“Your father's business partner.””
Claire frowned.
“My father didn't have a business partner.””
“He did. His name was Arthur Whitmore.””
The name meant nothing to Claire.
“My father was a lawyer.””
“He was also the legal architect of the Bennett family trust. Arthur handled the financial arrangements. Together, they created a structure that protected the controlling shares from Michael.””
Evelyn moved toward the photograph.
“Your father trusted Arthur. That was his mistake.””
Claire stepped between her and the desk.
“Why should I believe you?””
“Because Arthur is the person who signed the original death certification paperwork.””
Claire felt her stomach drop.
“Dr. Morris signed it.””
“Dr. Morris was paid to sign it. Arthur arranged the payment.””
Claire shook her head.
“Why would a lawyer want Nathan dead?””
Evelyn looked directly at her.
“Because Nathan discovered that the trust had been altered.””
Claire opened the notebook.
“Altered how?””
“Someone inserted a clause allowing the trustee to transfer control of the shares if the beneficiary's legal guardian was declared unfit.””
Claire remembered the guardianship petition.
“That's why Daniel tried to take Ellie.””
Evelyn nodded.
“Daniel was supposed to become her guardian. Once that happened, the shares could be transferred to an entity controlled by Michael.””
Claire stared at her.
“And you helped them?””
Evelyn's face crumpled.
“I helped create the problem.””
The room went quiet.
Evelyn pulled a folded photograph from her handbag.
It showed a younger woman standing beside Michael Bennett.
The woman was holding a baby.
Claire looked closer.
The baby was Daniel.
“I married Michael when I was twenty-three,” Evelyn said.
“I believed he was a brilliant businessman who had been betrayed by his family.””
She swallowed.
“Then I discovered the truth. He had been stealing from his father. When Nathan refused to help him, Michael disappeared and staged his own death.””
“What happened to you?””
“He told me to raise Daniel under a different surname. He said it was for our safety.””
“And you believed him?””
“For a while.””
Evelyn sat on a cardboard box.
“By the time I understood what he was doing, Daniel was already growing up believing that his uncle had stolen his inheritance.””
Claire shook her head.
“Nathan didn't steal anything.””
“I know that now.””
“Then why did you help Daniel?””
Evelyn's eyes filled.
“Because Michael threatened to expose my past. He told me that if I didn't help him recover the trust, he would destroy Daniel's life.””
Claire looked at the photograph again.
“You're telling me you drugged my husband?””
“No.””
“Then who did?””
Evelyn looked away.
“Arthur Whitmore.””
Claire felt her stomach tighten.
“He arranged the meeting?””
“Yes. Vanessa Cole was the name I used when I began working with Daniel. It was an identity designed to keep my connection to Michael hidden.””
“Why did Nathan meet you?””
“Because I told him I had evidence against Arthur.””
“And you did?””
Evelyn nodded.
“But before I could give it to him, Arthur arrived.””
Claire stepped closer.
“What happened?””
“He brought a medical technician. They used a substance that caused Nathan's vital signs to drop dramatically. I thought they were going to frighten him into signing the documents.””
Her voice cracked.
“I didn't know they intended to put him in a coffin.””
Claire stared.
“You watched them do it?””
Evelyn shook her head.
“I ran. I was afraid Michael would kill me too.””
“You left my husband there.””
“I know.””
“You left him there!””
Claire's voice echoed through the room.
Evelyn began crying.
“I have lived with that every day.””
Claire wanted to slap her.
She wanted to scream until the walls cracked.
Instead, she took out her phone.
“I'm calling Detective Lawson.””
Evelyn nodded.
“Do it.””
But before Claire could dial, her phone rang.
It was Nathan.
She answered immediately.
“Nathan?””
“Claire, where are you?””
“I'm at my father's storage archive.””
“Get out of there.””
“Why?””
“Someone accessed your father's old office records. The police found a surveillance device in the hospital room.””
Claire looked at Evelyn.
“What?””
Nathan's voice became urgent.
“Michael knows where you're going.””
Claire turned toward the door.
A shadow moved beneath it.
Then came a voice.
“Hello, Evelyn.””
Evelyn went completely still.
Michael.
The door handle began turning.
Claire grabbed the notebook and moved behind a row of shelves.
Evelyn whispered:
“Don't let him see the photograph.””
The door opened.
A tall man stepped inside.
His hair was gray, his suit immaculate, and his expression strangely calm.
Claire recognized him immediately.
He looked exactly like Nathan.
But older.
Michael Bennett.
He glanced around the room.
“Evelyn,” he said.
“You've been very difficult to find.””
Evelyn stood.
“Leave her alone.””
Michael smiled.
“Still playing the hero?””
He looked toward the shelves.
“Claire, I know you're here.””
Claire held her breath.
Michael placed a small black folder on the desk.
“I've spent twenty years trying to recover something that belongs to me.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“It never belonged to you.””
Michael's smile vanished.
“Your father-in-law made sure of that.””
“He protected his family.””
“He chose Nathan.””
“He chose the rightful beneficiary.””
Michael stepped closer.
“Enough.””
He opened the folder.
Inside was a photograph of Ellie.
This time, it showed her outside Margaret's house.
Taken that morning.
Claire's heart slammed against her ribs.
Michael looked toward the shelves again.
“Come out, Claire.””
She didn't move.
“Your daughter is very sweet. She has Nathan's eyes.””
Evelyn stepped between him and the shelves.
“Don't.””
Michael looked at her.
“You always were sentimental.””
Then he pulled a small device from his pocket.
A phone.
He pressed a button.
Claire's own phone vibrated.
A live video appeared.
Margaret was sitting in her living room.
Ellie was beside her, coloring.
And a man was standing behind them.
Claire recognized him.
Daniel.
Michael smiled.
“Now, perhaps we can have a proper conversation.””
Detective Rebecca Lawson was halfway through reviewing the interrogation footage when her phone rang.
It was Claire.
“Detective, I need you to listen.””
Rebecca sat upright.
“Where are you?””
“Inside my father's storage archive. Michael Bennett is here.””
Rebecca grabbed her jacket.
“Are you safe?””
“Not exactly.””
“Stay where you are. Do not confront him.””
Claire looked at Michael.
He was watching her.
“It's a little late for that.””
Rebecca heard his voice.
“Michael?””
Michael smiled.
“Tell the detective I said hello.””
Rebecca immediately signaled to the officers outside her office.
“Keep him talking, Claire.””
But Michael suddenly reached across the desk and snatched the phone from her hand.
“That's enough.””
He ended the call.
Then he looked at Evelyn.
“Now, where is the original trust deed?””
Evelyn stared at him.
“I don't know.””
Michael slapped the desk.
“Don't lie to me!””
Claire stepped out from behind the shelves.
“Leave her alone.””
Michael turned.
For the first time, he looked genuinely pleased.
“There she is.””
Claire held up the leather notebook.
“You want this?””
Michael's eyes narrowed.
“Give it to me.””
“Not until you tell me what happened to my husband.””
He laughed.
“Your husband?””
He took one step forward.
“Nathan has always been the problem.””
“Why?””
“Because he was born into a life that should have been mine.””
Claire stared at him.
“You destroyed your own family.””
Michael's expression darkened.
“Your father said the same thing.””
He reached for the notebook.
Claire pulled it back.
And Evelyn suddenly grabbed a metal lamp from the desk.
She swung it against Michael's arm.
He shouted and stumbled.
“RUN!””
Claire bolted toward the door.
Evelyn followed.
But Michael recovered quickly.
He grabbed Evelyn by the coat and pulled her backward.
Claire turned.
“LET HER GO!””
Michael raised his free hand.
“Stop, or I'll break her neck.””
Claire froze.
Then sirens sounded outside.
Michael looked toward the window.
Rebecca's officers were arriving.
He shoved Evelyn aside and ran through the rear exit.
Claire rushed to Evelyn.
“Are you hurt?””
Evelyn shook her head.
“Go!””
They ran outside.
But Michael was already climbing into a black SUV.
As the vehicle sped away, Claire noticed something lying on the pavement.
A small brass key.
She picked it up.
There was a number engraved on it.
*718.*
Evelyn stared.
“Oh, no.””
“What?””
Evelyn's face went white.
“That's not a storage key.””
“What is it?””
“It's the number of the safety deposit box where your father kept the original trust deed.””
Claire looked at her.
“Where?””
May you like
Evelyn swallowed.
“At the bank where Arthur Whitmore still works.””
