Chapter 4: Locked in the Dark

“Stay behind me,” Claire whispered.

Ellie buried her face against her mother's stomach.

“Mommy, I'm scared.””

Claire wrapped both arms around her daughter.

“I know, baby. But I need you to be very quiet for a minute.””

Outside the storage unit, someone dragged something heavy across the concrete floor.

Then came three knocks.

“Mrs. Bennett?””

Claire didn't answer.

“I'm not here to hurt you. I only want the documents.””

Margaret stood frozen beside the filing cabinet.

Claire looked at her.

“Do you recognize his voice?””

Margaret shook her head.

The man knocked again.

“Mrs. Bennett, I know you're in there.””

Claire reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone.

No signal.

She tried calling 911 anyway.

The screen displayed CALL FAILED.

“Damn it,” she whispered.

Ellie tugged at her sleeve.

“Mommy?””

Claire crouched.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Can Mr. Buttons help?””

The little girl held out her battered teddy bear.

For one heartbreaking second, Claire almost laughed.

Then she kissed Ellie's forehead.

“Mr. Buttons is helping by staying brave.””

Outside, the man sighed.

“Look, I know about your husband. I know he's at the hospital. And I know you've been asking questions.””

Claire's stomach tightened.

“How do you know that?”” she shouted.

“Because people are worried about what Nathan might remember.””

Margaret stepped forward.

“Who sent you?””

A pause.

“Daniel.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Of course.””

The man continued.

“Daniel wants the brown envelope. Give it to me, and you can leave.””

Claire glanced at the envelope in her hand.

“What envelope?””

“Don't play games.””

“Tell Daniel he can come get it himself.””

The man laughed.

“You really don't understand how dangerous this is, do you?””

Claire's fingers tightened around the envelope.

“I understand that my husband nearly died.””

“He should have stayed dead.””

Silence.

The words seemed to suck the air out of the room.

Margaret began crying quietly.

Claire felt something inside her harden.

“You tell Daniel something for me.””

“What?””

“Tell him Nathan is alive. And when my husband wakes up, he's going to tell everyone what happened.””

The man stopped laughing.

A second later, something struck the metal door.

Ellie screamed.

Claire pulled her behind her.

“Don't you dare touch my daughter!””

“Then give me the documents!””

Claire looked around desperately.

The storage unit had no windows. The filing cabinet stood against the back wall. Several boxes were stacked near the ceiling.

Then she noticed something.

A narrow ventilation opening near the floor.

It was covered by a metal grate.

Claire rushed toward it.

“Margaret, help me.””

Together, they dragged the filing cabinet away from the wall.

“What are you doing?”” Margaret whispered.

“Finding a way out.””

The opening was barely wide enough for Ellie.

Claire removed the screws with the small metal edge of her key.

The grate came loose.

Behind it was a narrow service passage.

It smelled of dust and damp concrete.

Margaret stared.

“Claire, that's too small.””

“For Ellie, it isn't.””

Claire knelt.

“Baby, listen to Mommy.””

Ellie's eyes were enormous.

“I want Daddy.””

“I know. And we're going to get back to him. But first, I need you to crawl through this little tunnel.””

Ellie shook her head.

“No.””

Claire held her face.

“Remember what Daddy always says when you're scared?””

Ellie sniffled.

“Be a brave Bennett.””

“That's right.””

Claire kissed her.

“You're going to crawl until you see a little metal door. Then you'll call for help. Can you do that?””

Ellie looked at Margaret.

“Grandma coming?””

“Right behind you, sweetheart,” Margaret said.

Claire carefully guided Ellie into the passage.

The little girl disappeared into the darkness, clutching Mr. Buttons.

“Keep going!”” Claire called softly.

Outside, the man began striking the storage door again.

Margaret crawled through next.

Claire followed, carrying the brown envelope.

She had barely pulled herself into the passage when the storage unit door suddenly rattled.

A heavy metallic crash followed.

The man had forced it open.

“WHERE ARE YOU?””

Claire crawled faster.

Her elbows scraped against the concrete.

Behind her, she heard footsteps.

Then a flashlight beam appeared through the ventilation opening.

“Found them!””

Claire pushed forward.

“Ellie! Keep going!””

The little girl reached the end first.

She pushed against a loose metal panel and tumbled into a maintenance corridor.

Margaret followed.

Claire was almost through when someone grabbed her ankle.

She screamed.

A rough hand tightened around her leg.

“Give me the envelope!””

Claire kicked backward.

Her heel struck the man's face.

He cursed and released her.

She scrambled forward and pulled herself into the corridor.

Margaret grabbed the metal panel.

“Close it!””

Together, they forced it shut.

The man slammed against the other side.

“YOU CAN'T HIDE FROM US!””

Claire pulled Ellie into her arms.

Then they ran.

The corridor led to an emergency exit at the rear of the building.

Margaret pushed the door open.

Cold evening air rushed in.

A delivery driver was standing beside a van, eating from a paper bag.

He looked up as three terrified women stumbled out.

“Hey! What's going on?””

“Call the police!”” Claire shouted.

The driver immediately dropped his food and reached for his phone.

Behind them, the emergency door burst open.

The man emerged.

He was tall, wearing a black jacket and a baseball cap.

He looked directly at Claire.

Then he pointed.

“THAT'S HER!””

The driver stepped between them.

“Back off!””

The stranger hesitated.

Sirens sounded in the distance.

He turned and ran toward the railway tracks.

Claire watched him disappear.

Her knees finally gave way.

Margaret caught her.

“Are you hurt?””

Claire shook her head.

Then she looked down at Ellie.

Her daughter was crying silently, holding Mr. Buttons against her chest.

Claire kissed her hair.

“It's over, baby.””

But it wasn't.

Not even close.

At the police station, Detective Rebecca Lawson listened without interrupting.

She was in her early forties, with short brown hair and an expression that suggested she had heard every possible excuse from every possible criminal.

Claire placed the brown envelope on the desk.

“Someone tried to break into the storage unit and steal these.””

Rebecca opened it.

Inside were the financial records, photographs, and guardianship documents.

“Who is Daniel Price?””

“Nathan's business partner.””

“And you believe he arranged your husband's death?””

“I believe he tried.””

Rebecca leaned back.

“That's a serious accusation.””

“I know.””

“Do you have evidence that Daniel drugged Nathan?””

Claire shook her head.

“Not yet.””

“What about the man who attacked you?””

“He said Daniel sent him.””

“Can you identify him?””

Claire nodded.

“Tall. Black jacket. Gray baseball cap. Scar above his left eyebrow.””

Rebecca wrote it down.

Then she examined the guardianship document.

“Mrs. Bennett, do you understand what this is?””

“A petition to make Margaret my daughter's guardian.””

“Not exactly.””

Rebecca turned the document around.

“This is a temporary emergency guardianship agreement. It gives Margaret authority to make certain decisions regarding Ellie if you become incapacitated.””

Claire stared at her mother-in-law.

Margaret looked devastated.

“I thought it was a medical emergency document.””

Rebecca continued.

“There's something else. This was filed with the county court yesterday.””

Claire's stomach dropped.

“Yesterday?””

“Yes. The petition alleges that you're emotionally unstable following your husband's death and unable to provide a safe environment for your daughter.””

Claire stood.

“That's a lie!””

Rebecca raised one hand.

“Sit down, Mrs. Bennett.””

“My husband is in intensive care! My child just watched him come back from a coffin! Of course I'm upset!””

“I understand.””

“No, you don't!””

Rebecca studied her.

“Who signed the petition?””

Claire looked at the paper.

The answer was already there.

Daniel Price.

But another signature appeared beneath his.

Vanessa Cole.

Claire's face went white.

“Why would Nathan's business partner and his wife have anything to do with my daughter?””

Rebecca closed the folder.

“That's exactly what we're going to find out.””

She looked at Margaret.

“Mrs. Bennett, did you knowingly agree to this arrangement?””

Margaret shook her head.

“No. Daniel told me it was something Nathan had requested.””

“Do you have proof?””

Margaret hesitated.

Then she reached into her handbag.

“I have something.””

She removed a small folded note.

Rebecca opened it.

The handwriting was Nathan's.

Mom, if Claire is ever accused of being unfit, do not sign anything. Daniel is planning to use the guardianship papers to gain control of Ellie's inheritance.

Claire stared.

“What inheritance?””

Margaret looked at her.

“Your husband created a trust for Ellie when she was born.””

“How much money?””

Margaret swallowed.

“Twenty-two million dollars.””

Claire felt the room spin.

Rebecca looked up sharply.

“Twenty-two million?””

Margaret nodded.

“And Nathan was the sole trustee.””

Claire slowly sat down.

Now the pieces were beginning to fit.

Daniel hadn't just wanted Nathan's company.

He wanted access to the money Nathan had set aside for his daughter.

And if Claire were declared unfit, Daniel could use Margaret as the bridge to take control.

Rebecca picked up her phone.

“I want officers at the hospital immediately. We also need to locate Daniel Price and Vanessa Cole.””

Claire reached for her own phone.

A message had just arrived.

It was from the hospital.

Mrs. Bennett, please return immediately. Your husband has regained consciousness.

Claire jumped up.

“What happened?””

Rebecca looked at her.

“Your husband woke up?””

Claire nodded, tears already falling.

“Take me to him.””

When Claire reached the hospital, Dr. Hayes was waiting outside Nathan's room.

“Mrs. Bennett.””

“Where is he?””

“He's awake, but he's disoriented.””

“Can I see him?””

The doctor nodded.

“Briefly.””

Claire rushed inside.

Nathan lay beneath the white hospital blanket.

His eyes were open.

He turned his head.

For a moment, he simply stared at her.

Then his lips moved.

“Claire?””

She covered her mouth.

“Oh, Nathan.””

She rushed to his bedside and took his hand.

He squeezed weakly.

“Ellie?””

“She's safe.””

“Where?””

“With Margaret. She's waiting to see you.””

Nathan closed his eyes.

A tear slipped down his cheek.

“Thank God.””

Claire kissed his forehead.

“I thought I'd lost you.””

Nathan looked at her.

“Did they bury me?””

Claire nodded.

He stared at the ceiling.

Then he whispered:

“Daniel…”

Claire leaned closer.

“Yes. We know about Daniel.””

Nathan's expression changed.

“No. You don't.””

He struggled to lift his hand.

Claire held it.

“Tell me.””

Nathan swallowed.

“Daniel wasn't working alone.””

Claire froze.

“Who else?””

Nathan looked directly into her eyes.

“Someone in the hospital.””

Before Claire could respond, a nurse entered carrying a medication tray.

Nathan saw her.

His entire body stiffened.

He grabbed Claire's wrist.

“Don't let her touch me.””

The nurse stopped.

“Mr. Bennett, it's time for your medication.””

Nathan began shaking.

“GET HER OUT!””

Claire turned.

The nurse was already reaching for the IV line.

And on her identification badge was a name Claire recognized from the brown envelope.

*VANESSA COLE.*
