Chapter 6: The Price of an Unborn Child
Daniel didn't remember leaving his father's study.
He remembered the photograph. He remembered the message threatening his family. He remembered the way Robert had gripped the edge of the desk when he saw the words written beneath the image.
After that, everything became a blur of footsteps, ringing phones, and questions nobody could answer.
When Daniel returned to the living room, Vanessa was standing beside the windows, staring into the garden.
She turned at the sound of his footsteps.
“Daniel?””
He held up the photograph.
Her face changed instantly.
“Where did you get that?””
“From Marcus.””
She looked as though the floor had vanished beneath her.
“Did he contact you?””
“He threatened me.””
Vanessa pressed a hand against her mouth.
“What did he say?””
“That I have forty-eight hours to approve a quarter-million-dollar transfer. Otherwise, you'll tell the police what happened to Emily Carter.””
Vanessa sank onto the sofa.
Daniel placed the photograph on the coffee table.
“And then he sent me this.””
She stared at it.
“Daniel, I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I never wanted any of this to happen.””
“Were you paid to marry me?””
She said nothing.
Daniel's voice sharpened.
“Were you?””
Vanessa slowly nodded.
He closed his eyes.
For a moment, he couldn't bear to look at her.
“How much?””
“Fifty thousand dollars.””
He opened his eyes again.
“Fifty thousand dollars to marry me?””
“It was supposed to be an advance.””
“An advance on what?””
She twisted her wedding ring.
“Access to the family trust. Information about your father's business. Anything Marcus couldn't obtain himself.””
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“You stood beside me at the altar knowing you were being paid to deceive me.””
“Yes.””
“You promised to love me.””
“I know.””
“You looked me in the eyes and promised to build a family with me.””
“I know!””
Her shout cracked through the room.
She covered her face.
“I know what I did, Daniel. I know it was wrong. You don't have to keep telling me.””
He stared at her.
“You're right. I don't.””
He turned toward the door.
Vanessa sprang up.
“Where are you going?””
“To the police.””
She grabbed his arm.
“Please, just listen to me first.””
“Let go.””
“Marcus will destroy us!””
“You destroyed us when you took his money.””
“No!”” She shook her head desperately.
“You don't understand. I tried to leave him before the wedding. I told him I wanted out.””
“Then why did you marry me?””
“Because he threatened my sister.””
Daniel stopped.
“Your sister?””
Vanessa nodded.
“My younger sister, Claire. She's been struggling with addiction for years. Marcus paid off the people she owed money to.
Then he started using that debt to control me. He said if I walked away, he'd make sure she never saw another day outside a prison cell.””
Daniel studied her face.
“Is that true?””
“Yes.””
“Can you prove it?””
She hesitated.
Then she hurried to her handbag and pulled out a small black notebook.
“I kept records.””
Daniel took it.
Inside were dates, amounts, names, and short notes written in Vanessa's cramped handwriting.
Several entries referred to payments made to a company called Harbor Medical Solutions.
Others mentioned meetings with Marcus.
One entry, dated two weeks before their wedding, made Daniel's stomach tighten.
*Marcus says Eleanor's letter confirms the child clause. Must become pregnant before the second anniversary.*
Daniel looked up.
“What is the child clause?””
Vanessa began crying.
“I don't know exactly.””
“You wrote it down.””
“Marcus told me that once I had your child, the trust would be required to provide money for the baby's care. He said it was the only way to access the funds without your father's approval.””
Daniel stared at the notebook.
“And you believed him?””
“He showed me a copy of the trust agreement.””
“Did you read it?””
“Yes.””
“Then you knew the baby was part of the plan.””
Vanessa pressed both hands against her stomach.
“At first, yes.””
Daniel felt a wave of nausea.
“And now?””
“Now I love this baby.””
He looked at her for a long moment.
“Then help me protect the child.””
She nodded frantically.
“I will. I'll tell the police everything.””
“Everything?””
“Yes.””
“Even if it means admitting you deliberately staged the fall and lied about my father?””
She looked toward the hallway.
“Yes.””
“Even if it means admitting you married me for money?””
Her lips trembled.
“Yes.””
“Even if it means admitting you planned this pregnancy?””
Vanessa lowered her head.
“Yes.””
Daniel placed the notebook on the table.
“Then we're going to the police.””
She nodded again.
But when he reached for his phone, she suddenly grabbed his wrist.
“There's something else.””
He closed his eyes briefly.
“Of course there is.””
“Marcus didn't just arrange the pregnancy. He told me the baby might be the only way to keep you from investigating him.””
Daniel stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
“He said if you believed the baby was in danger, you'd do anything to protect it. He thought you would approve the transfer without asking questions.””
Daniel remembered rushing home after Vanessa's frantic call. He remembered seeing her on the floor and feeling the world collapse around him.
Marcus had understood exactly how to use Daniel's love against him.
And Vanessa had helped him do it.
“Did Marcus tell you to stage the fall?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No. That was my idea.””
“Why?””
“Because Robert had found the account records. I thought if I could make Daniel believe your father was dangerous, you'd force him to hand over control of the trust.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You were willing to have me destroy my relationship with my own father just to get money.””
Vanessa's voice broke.
“I was desperate.””
“No. You were calculating. There's a difference.””
He stepped away from her.
She reached toward him but stopped before touching his arm.
“I know you may never forgive me.””
“You're right.””
The words seemed to drain the strength from her body.
“But I won't let Marcus use our child to destroy another family,” Daniel continued.
“If you're telling the truth now, you'll help me stop him.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I will.””
Daniel called the police.
Within minutes, two officers arrived at the mansion. A detective named Laura Bennett took Daniel's statement while another officer photographed the broken vase and the marks on Robert's face.
Vanessa sat at the dining table, clutching a glass of water.
Detective Bennett placed the black notebook in an evidence bag.
“Mrs. Mitchell, do you understand that admitting to a staged assault and financial fraud could have serious legal consequences?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
“Are you willing to make a formal statement?””
“Yes.””
“Do you have any evidence connecting Marcus Hale to these activities?””
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
He remained several feet away, his arms folded.
She turned back to the detective.
“I have messages. Bank records. And recordings.””
Detective Bennett raised an eyebrow.
“Recordings of what?””
“Conversations with Marcus.””
“Where are they?””
Vanessa opened her handbag and removed a small silver flash drive.
“I kept copies because I was afraid he'd turn against me.””
The detective took it.
“Why didn't you bring this to the police earlier?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Because I was benefiting from the arrangement.””
It was the first completely honest answer Daniel had heard from her.
Detective Bennett nodded.
“That's an important distinction. Being threatened doesn't erase your own actions. But evidence of coercion may help us understand what happened.””
She turned to Daniel.
“Mr. Mitchell, I also need to speak with your father about the trust documents and the attempted transfer.””
“Of course.””
Before the detective could continue, Daniel's phone rang.
His father's name appeared on the screen.
“Dad?””
Robert's voice was urgent.
“Son, I found the original trust agreement.””
Daniel straightened.
“Where?””
“In the safe behind your mother's old portrait. There's a clause I had forgotten about. It changes everything.””
“What clause?””
Robert paused.
“Your mother added a provision shortly before she died. If any beneficiary attempted to obtain money through fraud, coercion, or a false medical claim involving an unborn child, the trustee could suspend all discretionary payments until an independent review was completed.””
Daniel looked toward Detective Bennett.
She immediately motioned for him to put the call on speaker.
“Mr. Mitchell,” she said, “can you tell us whether the attempted transfer has been processed?””
“No,” Robert answered.
“I refused to approve it.””
“Then the money is still secure?””
“As far as I know.””
Daniel exhaled.
For the first time all day, a small measure of relief settled over him.
Then Robert continued.
“But there's another problem. Someone accessed the trust's online portal this morning using Daniel's credentials.””
Daniel felt his blood turn cold.
“I didn't access anything.””
“I know. The login came from a computer registered to Harbor Medical Solutions.””
Detective Bennett exchanged a look with her colleague.
“Mr. Mitchell, can you send us the access logs?””
“I'm doing that now.””
Daniel turned toward Vanessa.
She had gone rigid in her chair.
“Vanessa,” he said slowly, “did you give Marcus my password?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Think carefully.””
“I never had your password.””
“Then how did he access the portal?””
She looked toward the flash drive in the detective's hand.
Suddenly, her expression changed.
“Oh, God.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What?””
Vanessa began rummaging through her handbag, pulling out receipts and folded papers.
“He didn't need my password. He had something else.””
“What?””
She pulled out a small plastic card and placed it on the table.
It was an old employee identification badge from Mitchell Construction.
Daniel recognized the photograph.
It belonged to his younger brother, Michael.
His brother had died in a boating accident eight years earlier.
Daniel stared at the badge.
“Why do you have Michael's ID?””
Vanessa's hands trembled.
“Marcus gave it to me.””
“Why would Marcus have my brother's identification?””
“I don't know. He told me it was connected to the trust. He said it could open something your father had hidden.””
Daniel picked up the badge.
Michael's photograph smiled back at him, frozen in a happier time.
The detective leaned forward.
“Mrs. Mitchell, did you know your husband had a brother?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
“Did you know that Michael's death was investigated as a possible homicide?””
Daniel's head snapped toward her.
“What?””
Detective Bennett looked at him carefully.
“Mr. Mitchell, I apologize for raising this without preparation. But eight years ago, the county reopened the investigation into your brother's boating accident after an anonymous tip suggested the boat's emergency equipment had been tampered with.””
Daniel felt the room tilt.
“My father told me it was an accident.””
“The case was closed for insufficient evidence,” the detective said.
“But the tip was never resolved.””
Vanessa stared at the badge.
Then she whispered, “Marcus told me Michael's death was the reason your mother changed the trust.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“What did he know about my brother?””
She looked up, her eyes filled with terror.
“He said Michael discovered the money was being stolen. He said Michael was going to expose everyone.””
Daniel could barely breathe.
“Everyone who?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know.””
The detective stood.
“We need to secure that badge and the trust records immediately. Mr. Mitchell, I strongly advise you not to contact Marcus directly.””
Daniel nodded, but his thoughts were already racing.
His mother had known Marcus.
His wife had been paid to marry him.
His father had uncovered financial fraud.
And his dead brother might have been murdered for discovering the same secret.
As the officers prepared to leave, Vanessa suddenly grabbed Daniel's sleeve.
“There's one more thing I never told you.””
He looked at her, exhausted.
“What now?””
She swallowed hard.
“Marcus didn't give me Michael's badge because he wanted money.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Then why?””
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
“Because he believes Michael is still alive.””
The words silenced the room.
Daniel took a step backward.
“That's impossible.””
Vanessa shook her head, tears slipping down her cheeks.
“Marcus said the body recovered from the lake was never identified through DNA. He said someone paid the coroner to close the case.””
Daniel looked toward Detective Bennett.
The detective's expression had changed.
“Mrs. Mitchell,” she said carefully, “do you have any evidence to support that claim?””
Vanessa reached into her bag one final time.
She pulled out a photograph.
It showed a man standing outside a gas station, wearing a baseball cap and a dark jacket.
His face was older, his hair longer, but Daniel recognized the scar above the left eyebrow.
It was the scar Michael had received when they were teenagers.
Daniel took the photograph with shaking hands.
On the back, in black ink, were four words.
*Ask Dad who survived.*
He stared at the image.
Then he looked at the detective.
“Find out where this photograph was taken.””
She nodded.
But before she could turn away, Daniel's phone vibrated again.
A new message appeared from the unknown number.
*Stop looking for your brother. If you want to know why he disappeared, meet me alone tomorrow at midnight.*
May you like
A second message followed.
*Come alone, Daniel. Or the next person who falls won't get back up.*
