Chapter 4: The Woman Behind the Lies

For several seconds, Daniel thought he had misunderstood his wife.

His mother had been dead for six years.

He had held her hand in a hospital room while the machines beeped around them. He had kissed her forehead after she stopped breathing. He had watched his father collapse against the hospital wall, unable to accept that the woman he had loved for forty-three years was gone.

And now Vanessa was standing in their living room, claiming that the woman who had raised him had arranged his marriage.

“Take that back,” Daniel whispered.

Vanessa shook her head.

“Daniel, please.””

“Take it back!””

“I can't.””

He seized the brown folder and held it up between them.

“My mother died six years ago. You married me two years ago. Explain how a dead woman arranged any of this.””

Vanessa glanced at Maria.

“Can we speak privately?””

“No,” Daniel answered.

“You've had two years of privacy. You've had two years to lie to me. Whatever you have to say, you can say it in front of Maria.””

The housekeeper stood near the doorway, her hands folded tightly around her apron.

Vanessa swallowed.

“Your mother knew Marcus before she died.””

Daniel stared at her.

“That's impossible.””

“It's not.””

“Marcus was your fiancé. You said he was in debt. What did my mother have to do with him?””

Vanessa looked down at her wedding ring.

“Marcus's father worked for a company that did business with your family's construction firm. When his father died, Marcus discovered documents that he thought could destroy your father.””

“What documents?””

“I never saw them.””

“Then how do you know they existed?””

“Because Marcus told me.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“So everything you know comes from a man who blackmailed you?””

“He wasn't always like that.””

“Neither were you, apparently.””

She flinched.

For the first time since the confrontation began, Daniel felt no urge to shout. His anger had become something colder, something that made every word feel deliberate.

“Tell me exactly what my mother did.””

Vanessa took a trembling breath.

“Six months before your mother died, she contacted Marcus. She knew he was having financial problems. She offered to help him, but she wanted something in return.””

“What?””

“Access to your family.””

Daniel's face hardened.

“Access to what?””

“The company. Your father's private accounts. The family trust.””

Maria made a small, involuntary sound.

Daniel turned toward her.

“Maria?””

The housekeeper lowered her eyes.

“I'm sorry, sir.””

“Do you know something?””

She hesitated, then nodded.

“Your mother asked me to make coffee for a visitor one afternoon. I remember because she told me not to mention the visit to your father.””

Daniel felt a chill travel down his spine.

“Who was the visitor?””

“A young man. Dark hair. Expensive watch. He stayed in the study for nearly an hour.””

“Marcus?””

“I don't know his name. But your mother gave him an envelope when he left.””

Vanessa stared at Maria.

“You never told anyone?””

“I didn't know what I had seen,” Maria replied.

“And your mother was very kind to me. When my husband needed surgery, she paid the hospital bill. I didn't want to believe she was involved in anything bad.””

Daniel slowly closed the folder.

His mother had always been his moral compass. She was the woman who returned money when a cashier accidentally gave her too much change, who remembered the names of every employee, and who once drove forty minutes to return a wallet she had found in a parking lot.

The idea that she might have been involved in a scheme against her own family seemed absurd.

Yet he could no longer dismiss the evidence simply because he loved her.

“Vanessa,” he said, “why would my mother want access to our accounts?””

“I don't know.””

“Don't lie.””

“I'm not lying! Marcus said she was afraid your father would eventually leave the company to you and cut her off from everything.””

Daniel frowned.

“That makes no sense. My mother owned half the shares.””

“Maybe she was afraid of losing control.””

“My father never threatened her.””

“Perhaps she thought he would.””

Daniel turned away.

He remembered a conversation from the final months of his mother's life. He had walked into the kitchen late one evening and found her sitting at the counter, staring at a stack of papers.

When he asked what was wrong, she had smiled and said she was worried about the future.

He had assumed she meant her health.

Now he wondered whether she had been frightened by something else.

“Why did you marry me?”” he asked again.

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“Marcus told me to get close to you. He said the family would eventually give me access to the trust if I became your wife.””

“And the baby?””

Her face crumpled.

“That wasn't part of the original plan.””

Daniel looked at her stomach.

“Was getting pregnant an accident?””

Vanessa didn't answer immediately.

That hesitation was more painful than any confession.

Finally, she whispered, “I stopped taking my birth control.””

Daniel felt as though someone had punched him in the chest.

“Without telling me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I thought having a baby would make you trust me completely. I thought it would give me a permanent place in the family.””

He stared at her.

“You used our child as a strategy?””

“I didn't think I would fall in love with you!””

“You keep saying that as if it excuses anything.””

“It doesn't.”” She stepped toward him.

“But I need you to understand that somewhere along the way, things changed. I started wanting the life we had. I started wanting you. I started wanting our baby for real.””

Daniel looked at the ring on her finger.

“Then why keep taking the money?””

“Marcus wouldn't let me stop.””

“He threatened you?””

“He had photographs. Messages. Copies of everything I'd done. He said he'd send them to you and the police if I refused to cooperate.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“So you kept stealing from my family because your ex-fiancé told you to?””

“I was scared!””

“And you thought the solution was to frame my father for assault?””

Vanessa dropped onto the sofa.

“I didn't know what else to do.””

Daniel turned toward Maria.

“Call the police.””

Vanessa sprang up.

“No!””

He looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because Marcus will come after us!””

“Let him explain himself to the police.””

“You don't understand what he's capable of.””

“Then tell me.””

Vanessa gripped the sofa.

“He said Emily was supposed to marry you. Your mother arranged it. Emily's father was going to merge his business interests with yours, and the two families would become even more powerful.””

Daniel stared at the newspaper clipping.

“Emily Carter died in a fire.””

“Yes.””

“Was that an accident?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Marcus told me it wasn't.””

Maria covered her mouth.

Daniel felt his stomach turn.

“Who killed her?””

“I don't know.””

“Was my mother involved?””

“I don't know!””

Her voice cracked.

“Marcus said your mother arranged the meeting that night. He said Emily was supposed to be frightened into abandoning the marriage arrangement. But the house caught fire, and she never came out.””

Daniel gripped the edge of the table.

“Did my father know?””

“Marcus said Robert suspected something. That's why he started looking into the old accounts. He thought someone had been using the company to move money.””

“And you?””

“I was supposed to replace Emily.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Replace a dead woman?””

Vanessa nodded miserably.

“Marcus said the family needed someone they could control. He knew I was desperate. He knew about my debts. He told me your mother had approved the arrangement.””

Daniel shook his head.

“My mother died years before you met me.””

“Marcus said she'd left instructions.””

“What instructions?””

“I never saw them.””

Daniel slammed the folder onto the table.

“Then you know nothing!””

“I know she paid Marcus!””

“How?””

Vanessa reached into her handbag with shaking fingers and pulled out a small, folded photograph.

She handed it to Daniel.

It showed his mother standing outside a restaurant beside a younger man wearing a dark suit.

Daniel recognized the man immediately.

Marcus.

On the back of the photograph was a date.

Four months before his mother's death.

Daniel stared at the image until his vision blurred.

“Where did you get this?””

“Marcus sent it to me.””

“Why didn't you show me earlier?””

“Because I was afraid you would hate your mother.””

Daniel gave a hollow laugh.

“You thought hiding it would make me trust you?””

“No. I thought I could keep you from getting hurt.””

He looked at the photograph again.

There was something written beneath the date in his mother's unmistakable handwriting.

*If Robert finds out, everything we built will be lost.*

Daniel felt the floor shift beneath him.

Before he could speak, Maria's phone vibrated.

She glanced at the screen.

“Mr. Daniel, it's your father.””

Daniel answered immediately.

“Dad?””

Robert's voice was weak but urgent.

“Son, I need you to come to my study. There's something I should have told you years ago.””

Daniel looked at the photograph in his hand.

“What is it?””

A long silence followed.

Then Robert said, “Your mother didn't die believing everything was settled. The night before she passed away, she gave me a sealed envelope.””

Daniel's throat tightened.

“What was inside?””

“Instructions. Names. And a warning.””

“What warning?””

Robert's voice dropped to a whisper.

“She told me that if a woman named Vanessa ever entered our family, I must never let her near the trust.””

Daniel stopped breathing.

From the sofa, Vanessa made a small, terrified sound.

Robert continued.

“Son, I think your wife has finally done what your mother feared most.””

The call ended.

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

Vanessa stood motionless, her hands pressed against her belly.

“How could he know my name?”” Daniel whispered.

She looked at him, tears streaming down her face.

May you like

Then she answered with a confession that made the entire room feel colder.

“Because your mother knew who I was before you did.””
