Chapter 5: The Letter His Mother Left Behind

Daniel found his father sitting behind the enormous mahogany desk in his private study.

Robert's cheek had swollen beneath his left eye. A thin cut crossed his lower lip, and his glasses lay beside a glass of untouched water.

Yet he was already pulling open a locked drawer.

“Close the door,” Robert said.

Daniel obeyed.

For a moment, father and son stood in silence.

Daniel wanted to apologize for the punch. He wanted to embrace his father and beg him to forgive the terrible thing he had done.

But the photograph in his pocket felt like a stone.

“Dad,” he began, “I need you to tell me everything.””

Robert looked at him.

“I should have told you years ago.””

“Then why didn't you?””

“Because your mother asked me to protect you.””

Daniel let out a bitter breath.

“Protect me from what? The truth?””

Robert lowered his eyes.

“Sometimes the truth arrives too late to save anyone. It can only hurt the people left behind.””

“You don't get to decide what I can handle.””

“No. I suppose I don't.””

Robert unlocked the drawer and removed a cream-colored envelope. The paper had yellowed around the edges, and Daniel recognized his mother's handwriting on the front.

*For Robert. Open only if Vanessa comes into our family.*

Daniel took a step backward.

“She wrote that?””

Robert nodded.

“Six years ago. The night before she died.””

Daniel stared at the envelope.

“Did she know she was going to die?””

“No. At least, I don't believe she did. She had been ill for months, but the doctors thought she had more time.””

“Then why would she write this?””

Robert rubbed his face with both hands.

“Because she was frightened. She had discovered something about the people she had trusted.””

He pushed the envelope across the desk.

“Read it.””

Daniel carefully opened the seal.

Inside was a letter, three pages long.

The first lines were unmistakably his mother's.

My dearest Robert,

If you are reading this because Vanessa has entered our family, then I have failed to stop a mistake that began long before Daniel met her.

Daniel's fingers tightened around the paper.

He continued reading.

I made a terrible decision when I agreed to help Marcus Hale. I told myself I was protecting Daniel's future. I told myself I was protecting our family from a man who knew too much about our business.

But every compromise made the next one easier.

Marcus approached me with documents suggesting that someone inside our company had been diverting funds for years. He claimed he could help me discover the truth. Instead, he used what I told him to manipulate me.

Daniel stopped.

“Marcus approached her?””

Robert nodded.

“He was a consultant for one of our suppliers. Your mother believed he had evidence of financial misconduct.””

“Did he?””

“Yes. Some of it was real. Some of it had been altered.””

Daniel looked up.

“Who was stealing from the company?””

Robert's expression tightened.

“I don't know the full answer even now.””

Daniel returned to the letter.

Marcus told me that Emily Carter's family had become a threat. He said Emily's father possessed records that could destroy the company. He persuaded me that arranging a marriage between Emily and Daniel would protect our interests.

I never told Daniel. I never asked him whether he wanted such a marriage. I thought I could arrange everything quietly, and that once the families were joined, the danger would disappear.

Daniel felt sick.

His mother had been willing to arrange his future without his knowledge.

But the letter grew darker.

Then Emily died.

Marcus told me it was an accident. I wanted to believe him. I needed to believe him. But when I learned that he had visited Emily the evening before the fire, I began to suspect that the accident was not an accident at all.

Daniel's hands trembled.

He looked at his father.

“Did you know about Emily?””

“I learned about her after the fire.””

“And you never told me?””

“You were barely thirty. Your mother was dying. I had no proof that Marcus had caused the fire, and I feared an accusation would put you in danger.””

“You let me live without knowing any of this.””

Robert's eyes filled with tears.

“I thought silence was the only way to keep you safe.””

Daniel looked down again.

If I am gone, and Vanessa enters your life, do not assume she is acting alone.

Marcus has always needed someone he can control. Vanessa was once engaged to him, and I believe he has been using her debts to force her cooperation.

But there is something else.

I discovered that the original plan was never simply to merge our families. Marcus wanted access to the Mitchell trust. He wanted control of the money that my father left me, the money that I later placed in trust for Daniel and his children.

I believe he intends to use my son's marriage to gain that access.

Daniel stopped reading.

His father's face had gone pale.

“The trust,” Daniel said.

“How could Marcus access it through me?””

Robert folded his hands.

“Your mother placed restrictions on the trust. You can manage it, but certain transfers require approval from the family trustee.””

“That's you.””

“Yes. Unless I become incapacitated, or unless you submit a request under the emergency provisions.””

Daniel stared at him.

“What emergency provisions?””

Robert hesitated.

“Your mother insisted that the trust provide for your wife and children if something happened to you. Under specific circumstances, the trustee can authorize payments to a spouse for medical expenses, housing, and the care of a child.””

Daniel felt a chill.

“Could someone exploit that?””

“Someone could try.””

He remembered the bank statements. The private accounts. The payments to Harbor Medical Solutions.

And Vanessa's deliberate fall.

“Dad, she told me she stopped taking birth control so she'd get pregnant.””

Robert shut his eyes.

For several seconds, the only sound was the ticking of the clock on the mantel.

When he finally spoke, his voice was barely audible.

“Then she may have done more than steal money.””

Daniel gripped the desk.

“What are you saying?””

“Your mother believed Marcus would use a child as leverage. She was afraid he would find a way to claim money from the trust through the baby.””

Daniel stared at the letter.

His wife had deliberately become pregnant to secure her position in the family. That much she had admitted.

But he could not accept that she would harm their child.

“Vanessa wouldn't hurt the baby.””

Robert looked at him with exhausted sadness.

“I hope you're right.””

Daniel turned back to the final page.

Robert, if you ever discover that Vanessa has married Daniel, do not confront her until you know who is directing her. She may be guilty, but she may also be a prisoner of the man who first taught her how to lie.

Find the original records from Harbor Medical Solutions. They will reveal who is paying Marcus.

And if Daniel has a child, make certain the child is protected before the money is released.

I am sorry for what I have done. I am sorrier still for what I have left you to face.

With all my love,

Eleanor.

Daniel lowered the letter.

His mother had known.

She had suspected the danger, understood the manipulation, and left behind a warning.

But she had never told him.

“Why didn't you show me this before?”” he asked.

Robert looked toward the window.

“Because Vanessa never came into our lives until two years ago. By then, I had begun to believe Marcus had disappeared. I thought the danger had passed.””

“And when you discovered the accounts?””

“I remembered the letter. I hired an investigator to trace the payments. That was when I found Harbor Medical Solutions.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“What did you discover?””

Robert opened another drawer and removed a thin folder.

“The company claims to provide billing services for private medical clinics. But most of its payments come from shell companies. One of those companies has been receiving money from an account linked to Marcus.””

He handed Daniel a printed page.

At the top was a list of transactions.

The largest payment had been made three weeks earlier.

*$250,000 — Beneficiary: Harbor Medical Solutions. Authorization: Pending Trustee Approval.*

Daniel stared at the amount.

“Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars?””

“That's the amount Marcus has been trying to obtain from the trust.””

“Through Vanessa?””

“Through a medical expense claim filed in your child's name.””

Daniel felt as though the air had been sucked from the room.

“But the baby hasn't even been born.””

“Exactly.””

Robert leaned back in his chair.

“The claim states that Vanessa requires specialized care and that the child may need emergency treatment. The documents are suspicious, but I cannot approve or reject them without a formal review.””

Daniel looked at the signature on the last page.

It was his.

Or something very close to it.

Someone had forged his authorization.

“Who submitted this?””

“Vanessa's attorney.””

Daniel's head snapped up.

“She has an attorney?””

“Apparently.””

“Why didn't she tell me?””

“Perhaps because she didn't want you to ask questions.””

Daniel stood abruptly.

“I need to speak to her.””

Robert caught his wrist.

“Listen to me. Don't confront her alone.””

“Dad, she's my wife.””

“And she has already convinced you to assault me with one lie. Don't give her another opportunity to manipulate you.””

Daniel looked down at his father's bruised face.

Shame burned through him.

“I'm sorry.””

Robert's expression softened.

“I know.””

“No, you don't. I hit you without asking a single question.””

“You believed you were protecting your child.””

“I should have trusted you.””

Robert slowly stood.

“Trust isn't something we demand from one another, son. It's something we earn. I failed you by keeping secrets.

You failed me by acting before you knew the truth. We can both do better.””

Daniel's eyes stung.

For a moment, he was a boy again, standing beside his father in the garage after breaking a neighbor's window. Robert had made him apologize, then spent the afternoon helping him repair the damage.

Now the damage was far greater.

And his father could not repair it for him.

Daniel tucked the letter into the folder.

“I'm going to find out what Marcus wants.””

Robert nodded.

“Then start with Harbor Medical Solutions. I have an address.””

He handed Daniel a business card.

Before Daniel could take it, his phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

A message appeared on the screen.

*You have forty-eight hours to approve the $250,000 transfer. If you refuse, your wife will tell the police what happened to Emily Carter.*

Daniel stared at the message.

A second text arrived.

*And if you think the baby makes you untouchable, ask Vanessa what she was paid to do before she married you.*

Daniel looked up at his father.

Robert had read the message over his shoulder.

His face went white.

“Call the police,” Robert said.

Daniel nodded slowly.

But before he could dial, another message appeared.

This one contained a photograph.

It showed Vanessa standing outside a medical clinic, her hand resting on her stomach.

Beside her stood Marcus.

He was holding a manila envelope.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written a date.

The date was three days after Daniel and Vanessa's wedding.

May you like

And beneath it were six words that made Daniel's blood run cold.

*The pregnancy was part of the agreement.*
