Chapter 8: The Truth In The Shadows
When the lights returned, Richard was gone.
So was Marcus.
Only Ethan and I remained in the parking garage.
The silence felt heavier than any scream.
“What did he mean?”” Ethan asked.
I didn’t answer.
Because I was asking myself the same question.
Ask your wife.
Impossible.
My wife was gone.
She had been gone for ten years.
But Richard’s words planted a seed of doubt.
A terrible one.
Ethan looked at me.
“Daniel.””
I looked at him.
“We need to find Marcus.””
I nodded.
For the first time, Ethan and I weren’t enemies.
We were two people trying to uncover the same truth.
We returned to the old Carter Systems building.
The USB drive was still in my pocket.
Neither of us spoke.
Finally, Ethan broke the silence.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked out the window.
“For what?””
“For my family.””
I shook my head.
“You didn’t choose them.””
“No.””
He looked down.
“But I benefited from what they did.””
I didn’t respond.
Because he was right.
But he was also different.
That mattered.
We opened the USB drive.
Thousands of files appeared.
Emails.
Financial records.
Research documents.
Videos.
Then one file caught my attention.
*FINAL MESSAGE — EMILY CARTER*
My heart stopped.
Emily.
My wife.
I clicked it.
The screen went black.
Then her face appeared.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
A recording.
“Daniel…”
I covered my mouth.
Her voice.
After ten years.
Her voice.
“If you’re watching this, it means everything went wrong.””
Tears filled my eyes.
She continued.
“I need you to know something.””
She looked directly into the camera.
“I never betrayed you.””
I closed my eyes.
“I know.””
“But I also need you to know the truth.””
The video paused.
Then she said:
“The person who destroyed your company wasn’t Richard.””
Ethan looked at me.
I stared at the screen.
Emily continued.
“It was someone closer.””
My breathing stopped.
“I discovered that someone inside our company was selling information.””
A pause.
“I confronted them.””
The video shook slightly.
Then her voice became quieter.
“They begged me to keep silent.””
My hands trembled.
“Who?””
Emily looked down.
Then back at the camera.
“The person was…”
The video suddenly cut.
Static filled the screen.
Ethan hit the keyboard.
“No.””
I stared.
“Someone deleted the rest.””
A message appeared.
*REMOTE ACCESS DETECTED*
Someone was inside the system.
Someone was watching us.
Then another file appeared.
Automatically.
A new video.
Not from Emily.
From Marcus.
I opened it.
His face appeared.
He looked exhausted.
“Daniel, if you’re seeing this, I failed.””
My chest tightened.
Marcus continued.
“I wanted to tell you everything myself.””
He looked away.
“But I was afraid.””
A pause.
“The truth is, I didn’t destroy your career alone.””
I leaned closer.
“Someone else helped Richard.””
Marcus looked directly at the camera.
“Someone you trusted more than anyone.””
The screen flickered.
Then he said the name.
And everything inside me broke.
Because the person Marcus revealed…
Was someone I never imagined.
Someone who had comforted me.
Someone who had cried with me.
Someone who had held my hand when my wife died.
The video ended with one final sentence:
“Daniel, the person you’ve been searching for has been beside you the entire time.””
And at that exact moment…
The door behind us opened.
I turned.
A familiar voice spoke.
“Daniel.””
I froze.
May you like
Because the person standing there…
Was the last person I expected to see.
