Chapter 3: The Letter She Hid
I couldn’t move.
The envelope sat in front of me like it weighed a thousand pounds.
My wife’s handwriting.
Her name in my memory.
A secret I never knew existed.
For ten years, I believed I understood everything about the worst chapter of my life.
I was wrong.
“Open it,” Olivia whispered.
My hands shook as I broke the seal.
Inside was a single letter.
A letter dated three days before my wife passed away.
My eyes moved across the first line.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, then I am no longer beside you. I’m sorry.
I stopped.
The room disappeared.
I wasn’t in a conference room anymore.
I was back in our small apartment.
Back when she was still laughing.
Back when we still believed we had more time.
I continued reading.
I need you to know something. I was the reason you lost your job.
My breathing stopped.
The words blurred.
Ethan noticed.
“Daniel?””
I ignored him.
I kept reading.
Years ago, before you joined Carter Systems, I worked with investors who wanted control of your technology. They knew your ideas were valuable. They wanted ownership.
I refused to let them take everything from you.
So they destroyed your reputation instead.
I lowered the letter.
“What?””
Olivia looked down.
“Daniel…”
I looked at her.
“Who?””
She hesitated.
Then she said the name.
“Richard Whitmore.””
The room exploded into silence.
I slowly turned toward the CEO.
Richard’s face had lost all color.
“You knew?””
Nobody answered.
I stood.
“You knew?””
Richard looked away.
“Daniel, it wasn’t that simple.””
My hands tightened around the letter.
“You ruined my career.””
“No.””
“You made companies believe I was unreliable.””
“Daniel—”
“You made sure nobody would hire me.””
Richard stood.
“I made a mistake.””
“A mistake?””
My voice echoed.
“You took ten years of my life.””
The CEO lowered his eyes.
For the first time, he looked old.
“I was protecting my company.””
I laughed bitterly.
“And I was protecting my wife while everyone destroyed me.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Ethan stepped forward.
“Dad.””
I froze.
Dad?
I looked at Richard.
Then Ethan.
The pieces connected.
Ethan wasn’t just an executive.
He was the son of the man who destroyed my future.
Richard closed his eyes.
“I never wanted you to find out this way.””
I stared at him.
“You never wanted me to find out at all.””
That night, I didn’t go home immediately.
I sat alone in my car outside my apartment.
Rain hit the windshield.
The city lights blurred.
I read the letter again and again.
My wife wasn’t the person who betrayed me.
She had been fighting for me.
But she had carried the guilt alone.
A knock came on my window.
I looked up.
Ethan stood outside.
I rolled down the window.
“What do you want?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“I owe you an apology.””
I almost laughed.
“You do.””
He nodded.
“I spent years judging you.””
“Yes.””
“I thought your job meant you weren’t successful.””
I looked at him.
“And now?””
He looked down.
“Now I realize I was standing in front of someone I should have learned from.””
The honesty surprised me.
But forgiveness wasn’t that easy.
“Your father hurt me.””
“I know.””
“And you benefited from it.””
His face tightened.
“I know that too.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Ethan said something I never expected.
“I want to help you expose what happened.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
“Because I spent my whole life believing my father was a genius.””
He swallowed.
“Now I know he was just someone who was afraid of losing.””
Before I answered, my phone rang.
It was Olivia.
I picked up.
“Hello?””
Her voice sounded urgent.
“Daniel, you need to come back to the office.””
“Why?””
“Because someone leaked the old files.””
I frowned.
“What files?””
A pause.
Then she said:
“The files proving Richard Whitmore destroyed your career.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who leaked them?””
Olivia’s voice dropped.
“We don’t know.””
Another pause.
“But whoever did it also sent one message.””
“What message?””
She went silent.
May you like
Then whispered:
“They said the real person behind everything is still inside Whitmore Technologies.””
