Chapter 4: The Truth Nobody Expected

The next morning, Whitmore Technologies looked different.

Same building.

Same glass walls.

Same people walking through the lobby.

But something had changed.

Everyone was whispering.

Phones were buzzing.

Employees were reading the leaked documents spreading across the internet.

For the first time, the man they ignored was the person everyone wanted to talk to.

I walked through the lobby wearing the same old janitor uniform.

But nobody laughed.

Nobody looked away.

Some people nodded.

Others apologized.

A young employee stopped me near the elevator.

“Mr. Carter?””

I looked at him.

“Yes?””

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

He looked embarrassed.

“I used to joke about you.””

I smiled slightly.

“You didn’t know me.””

“But I should have.””

I nodded.

“That’s the lesson.””

The elevator doors opened.

Inside was Ethan.

He looked tired.

“Daniel.””

I stepped in.

For a moment, we stood silently.

Then Ethan said:

“My father resigned.””

I looked at him.

“Already?””

“He knows the board will remove him.””

The elevator moved upward.

“Good.””

Ethan nodded.

“I thought you would say that.””

“Wouldn’t you?””

He looked at the floor.

“Maybe.””

When we reached the conference room, Olivia was waiting.

She had dozens of documents spread across the table.

“We found more.””

I sat down.

“More?””

She nodded.

“Richard wasn’t acting alone.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Who else?””

She placed a file in front of me.

I opened it.

Inside was a list of names.

Investors.

Executives.

People who had benefited from my disappearance.

Then I saw something impossible.

A signature.

My own signature.

I stared.

“What is this?””

Olivia became quiet.

“That’s why I called you.””

The document showed a company transfer agreement.

A deal from ten years ago.

A deal that supposedly gave away my technology rights.

But I had never signed it.

Someone had forged my signature.

Ethan leaned closer.

“Who had access to your documents?””

I looked at him.

“Only a few people.””

Olivia watched me carefully.

“Daniel, there’s something else.””

“What?””

She placed another document down.

“This was found in the original investigation.””

I read the name.

And my heart stopped.

The person who had access to my private files…

The person who could have forged my signature…

Was someone I trusted.

Someone who had been beside me during the hardest moment of my life.

Someone I never suspected.

I whispered:

“No.””

Olivia looked at me sadly.

“Yes.””

I looked at the name again.

My hands went cold.

Because the person who destroyed my career…

Was not Richard Whitmore.

Was not an investor.

Was not a stranger.

It was the one person I thought had always been protecting me.

My best friend.

The man who helped me survive after my wife died.

The man who told me he believed in me.

The man who had been there when everyone else left.

Marcus.

My closest friend.

My only friend.

And then my phone received a message.

One sentence.

One sentence that changed everything.

*“Daniel, if you want the truth about your wife’s death, come alone.””*

And beneath it was a location.

A place I never thought I would see again.

May you like

The old Carter Systems building.

The place where my entire life fell apart.
