Chapter 8: The Truth Buried Underneath

The old family house looked smaller than Richard remembered.

Maybe because he was older.

Maybe because memories always made places larger than they really were.

The paint was peeling.

The windows were covered in dust.

But the moment Richard stepped inside, he remembered everything.

His childhood.

His parents.

His brother.

Daniel.

The detective team searched the rooms while Richard stood in the hallway.

Ethan stayed beside him.

“You okay?””

Richard nodded.

“No.””

Ethan gave a small, sad smile.

“At least you’re honest.””

Richard looked at him.

“I should have taught you that earlier.””

Ethan looked away.

“I should have learned it earlier.””

For a moment, they stood there.

Two people who had spent months hurting each other.

Now trying to rebuild.

Then Detective Carter called out.

“Mr. Hale.””

Richard walked toward him.

The detective stood inside Daniel’s old office.

On the desk was a locked box.

“What is that?””

“We found it hidden behind the wall.””

Richard stared.

“A hidden box?””

Carter nodded.

“Looks like it has been there for years.””

Richard touched the box.

His hand trembled.

“Open it.””

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Old letters.

And a small voice recorder.

Ethan looked confused.

“What is that?””

Richard picked it up.

The date was written on the side.

The date of Laura’s death.

Richard’s breathing changed.

“No.””

Ethan looked at him.

“Dad?””

Detective Carter carefully took the recorder.

“It still works.””

They pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice.

Laura.

Richard covered his mouth.

Twenty-seven years disappeared in an instant.

“Richard, if you’re hearing this…”

Her voice shook.

“If something happens to me, you need to know the truth.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

His mother’s voice.

A voice he hadn’t heard since he was seventeen.

Laura continued.

“Daniel came to see me today.””

Richard looked shocked.

The recording continued.

“He told me he was angry with Richard. He said he deserved half of everything.””

Richard felt sick.

“But I told him no.””

A pause.

Then Laura whispered:

“He threatened me.””

Ethan grabbed the edge of the desk.

“No…”

Richard listened.

Unable to move.

“I don’t know what Daniel is planning. But if anything happens, please don’t blame Ethan.””

Richard’s eyes filled.

Because that was Laura.

Even in fear.

She thought about their son.

The recording continued.

“Ethan was angry today. He said things he didn’t mean. But he is a good boy.””

Ethan broke.

A tear fell.

“He loved me.””

Richard put a hand on his son’s shoulder.

The recording continued.

“Richard, please tell him that.””

Then silence.

The final words came softly.

“I never stopped believing in him.””

The recorder clicked.

Nobody spoke.

For a long time.

Then Ethan whispered:

“I thought she hated me.””

Richard looked at him.

“She loved you.””

“I spent my whole life thinking I caused it.””

Richard pulled him into an embrace.

The first real embrace they had shared in years.

“You were a scared kid.””

Ethan cried.

“And I became someone who hurt you.””

Richard held him tighter.

“You can’t change the past.””

A pause.

“But you can decide who you become next.””

The police discovered more evidence in the hidden box.

Financial records.

Letters.

Proof that Daniel had attempted to manipulate Richard’s inheritance decades earlier.

But one thing was missing.

Daniel’s final connection.

Sophia.

Detective Carter received a call.

Then another.

His expression changed.

“She’s gone.””

Richard looked up.

“What?””

“Sophia left before we arrived.””

Ethan immediately looked worried.

“What about the evidence?””

Carter shook his head.

“She took something.””

Richard already knew.

“The letter.””

“Yes.””

Richard felt anger rise.

After everything.

After all the truth.

She still wanted control.

Then Ethan’s phone rang.

Sophia.

Everyone stared.

Ethan answered.

“Sophia?””

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

“You finally found out.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“Why?””

A laugh.

“Why?””

“Yes.””

“Because your father built a world where people like us never mattered.””

Ethan frowned.

“People like us?””

Sophia’s voice changed.

“You think I married you because I loved your family?””

Silence.

Richard looked at Ethan.

The pain on his son’s face was immediate.

Sophia continued:

“I married you because you were the easiest way in.””

Ethan whispered:

“You never loved me.””

“No.””

The answer was cold.

“I loved what your father had.””

Ethan looked destroyed.

Then Sophia said:

“But there’s something you don’t know.””

Richard stepped closer.

“Put her on speaker.””

Ethan did.

Sophia continued.

“Your father thinks he knows everything.””

Richard spoke.

“Where is the letter?””

A pause.

Then:

“I read it.””

Richard froze.

“What?””

Sophia laughed softly.

“And now I know why you hid the truth.””

Ethan looked at Richard.

“What truth?””

Sophia’s voice lowered.

“The truth about who your father really is.””

Richard felt a chill.

“What are you talking about?””

“You never told Ethan everything about the night his mother died.””

Richard said nothing.

Because she was right.

There was still something.

Something he had hidden.

Sophia continued:

“And when Ethan reads Laura’s original letter, he’ll finally understand.””

The call ended.

Everyone stood frozen.

Then Detective Carter looked at Richard.

“Mr. Hale.””

Richard looked at him.

“What?””

The detective’s expression was serious.

“Did Laura write another letter?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Because he knew.

May you like

She had.

And Sophia had found it.
