Chapter 2: The Perfect Lie

The video played silently for several seconds before Richard could force himself to look away.

On the screen, Sophia sat on his couch.

The same couch where Richard had held Ethan after his mother’s funeral.

The same couch where he had watched his son graduate.

Now Sophia sat there like she owned the place.

Ethan sat beside her.

Richard felt a painful pressure in his chest.

Not from his heart.

From betrayal.

“I thought she loved him,” Richard whispered.

Mark closed the laptop halfway.

“Richard, you need to watch everything.””

“I don’t know if I can.””

“You have to.””

Richard looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because if they’re planning what I think they’re planning, you need proof.””

Richard nodded slowly.

The video continued.

Sophia leaned toward Ethan.

“You’re making this harder than it needs to be.””

Ethan looked frustrated.

“He’s my father.””

“And he’s controlling your life.””

“He’s not controlling my life.””

Sophia smiled.

Not kindly.

Like she already knew the answer.

“He still sees you as a child.””

Ethan rubbed his face.

“I just want peace.””

“And you’ll have it.””

“How?””

Sophia paused.

Then she said something that made Richard’s stomach drop.

“By making everyone believe he can’t take care of himself.””

The video stopped.

Richard sat frozen.

For years, he had believed Ethan was being manipulated.

Now he realized something worse.

Ethan was participating.

Maybe not at first.

Maybe not completely.

But he was.

And that hurt more.

That afternoon, Richard called Ethan.

He almost didn’t.

Every part of him wanted to protect the son he remembered.

But he also needed answers.

Ethan arrived forty minutes later.

He walked through the front door without apologizing.

That alone told Richard everything.

“Dad, what is this about?””

Richard looked at him.

“You tell me.””

Ethan frowned.

“What?””

Richard placed a printed screenshot from the security footage on the table.

Ethan picked it up.

His face changed instantly.

“Where did you get this?””

Richard noticed something.

Not confusion.

Fear.

“You knew about the camera.””

Ethan stayed silent.

“Didn’t you?””

Ethan looked away.

“Dad…”

“No.””

Richard’s voice cracked.

“I need you to answer me.””

Ethan slowly placed the paper down.

“Sophia wanted security.””

“Security?””

“Yes.””

“Or evidence?””

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“You’re twisting this.””

Richard stared at him.

“Am I?””

For the first time, Ethan looked uncomfortable.

“She was worried.””

“About me?””

“Yes.””

Richard laughed quietly.

A painful laugh.

“Your wife was never worried about me.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””

Richard opened the laptop.

He pressed play.

Ethan heard his own voice coming from the speakers.

His face went pale.

On the video, Sophia said:

“Your father has assets worth nearly two million dollars.””

Ethan’s voice answered:

“I don’t want his money.””

Sophia smiled.

“You say that now.””

The video ended.

Ethan didn’t move.

Richard watched his son process what he had heard.

“You never cared about the money,” Ethan whispered.

Richard looked confused.

“What?””

Ethan looked toward the screen.

“She lied to me too.””

A moment of silence passed.

Then Richard noticed something strange.

Ethan wasn’t angry.

He looked scared.

“What did Sophia tell you?”” Richard asked.

Ethan swallowed.

“That you were planning to cut me out.””

Richard stared.

“She said you had changed your will.””

Richard closed his eyes.

Of course.

The documents.

The missing papers.

The accusations.

Sophia had created a war between father and son.

But why?

Before Richard could speak, the front door opened.

Both men turned.

Sophia stood there.

And she was not smiling.

“You weren’t supposed to find that.””

Ethan looked at her.

“Sophia…”

Her expression changed.

A coldness Richard had never seen before appeared.

“I can explain.””

Richard stood.

“No.””

Sophia looked at him.

“Richard, please.””

“No more pretending.””

Ethan stepped between them.

“What have you done?””

Sophia stared at him.

“You’re really asking me that?””

Ethan’s face tightened.

“You lied to me.””

Sophia laughed softly.

“You believed everything because you wanted to.””

That sentence destroyed something inside Ethan.

Because it was true.

He wanted to believe Richard was the problem.

It was easier.

He didn’t want to admit that he had become angry because he was afraid.

Afraid of failing.

Afraid of losing control.

Afraid that his father saw him as a disappointment.

Sophia walked closer.

“You think your father is innocent?””

Richard said nothing.

She turned toward him.

“Tell him.””

“Tell him what?””

“That you were going to leave everything to charity.””

Ethan looked at Richard.

Richard hesitated.

Then he nodded.

“Yes.””

Ethan stared.

“Why?””

“Because you didn’t need my money.””

The words hit harder than any accusation.

“You needed to become your own man.””

Ethan looked down.

Sophia’s face changed.

She realized something.

She was losing him.

So she reached into her purse.

And pulled out a folder.

“I didn’t want to do this.””

Richard looked at it.

“What is that?””

Sophia smiled.

A small, confident smile.

“The reason you’re going to lose everything.””

She placed the folder on the table.

Ethan opened it.

Inside was a document.

A signed document.

Richard’s signature was at the bottom.

Ethan looked shocked.

“Dad…”

Richard stepped closer.

“That’s not possible.””

Sophia leaned back.

“Actually, it is.””

Richard picked up the paper.

His blood turned cold.

Because the signature looked exactly like his.

But there was one detail Sophia didn’t notice.

One tiny mistake.

One mistake that would reveal the entire truth.

Richard looked at Ethan.

“Your wife made one mistake.””

Sophia’s smile faded.

“What mistake?””

Richard turned the page.

And pointed.

“This.””

Ethan looked closer.

Then his expression changed.

Because he recognized the handwriting.

It wasn’t Richard’s.

It was someone else’s.

Someone inside their home.

Someone who had been lying from the beginning.

And before anyone could speak, Richard’s phone rang.

The caller ID showed a name nobody expected.

*Detective James Carter.*

Richard answered.

A voice came through.

“Mr. Hale, we found something on the security footage.””

Richard held his breath.

“What?””

The detective paused.

Then said:

“We found the person who altered the video.””

Richard looked at Ethan.

Ethan looked at Sophia.

And Sophia’s carefully built story began falling apart.

Because the camera had recorded something she never knew existed.

A second angle.

May you like

A hidden backup.

And what it showed next would change everything.
