Chapter 5: The Person Behind the Plan

Richard stared at the photograph.

For several seconds, he couldn’t speak.

The person in the image looked back at him with the same familiar smile he had seen hundreds of times.

A smile that now felt completely different.

“No,” Richard whispered.

Ethan leaned closer.

“Dad?””

Richard handed him the photograph.

Ethan looked.

His expression changed instantly.

“What?””

Detective Carter watched them carefully.

“You know this person?””

Richard nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

His voice became quieter.

“I know him very well.””

The photograph showed Michael Grant.

Richard’s longtime financial advisor.

A man who had helped Richard manage his investments after his wife passed away.

A man who had sat at his kitchen table drinking coffee.

A man who had told Richard:

“You remind me of my own father.””

Richard felt sick.

“How long?””

Detective Carter opened another file.

“Michael has been communicating with Sophia for almost a year.””

Ethan looked angry.

“A year?””

“Yes.””

Richard closed his eyes.

A year.

While he was grieving.

While he was trusting people.

While he was believing his family was protecting him.

They were planning against him.

“What was the goal?”” Richard asked.

Detective Carter looked at him.

“Control of your estate.””

Richard already knew.

But hearing it aloud made it real.

“They wanted my money.””

“Yes.””

Ethan looked down.

“I helped them.””

Richard looked at his son.

Ethan’s eyes were full of regret.

“No,” Richard said.

Ethan looked surprised.

“No?””

“You made mistakes.””

“I hurt you.””

“Yes.””

Richard’s voice softened.

“But you are not the same as them.””

Ethan looked away.

For the first time, he allowed himself to feel the weight of what he had done.

Michael arrived at the police station an hour later.

He walked in wearing an expensive suit and a confident expression.

But when he saw Richard and Ethan sitting there, his confidence disappeared.

“Richard.””

The old warmth was gone.

Richard looked at him.

“Michael.””

Michael forced a smile.

“I heard there was some misunderstanding.””

Detective Carter stood.

“Mr. Grant, we need to ask you a few questions.””

Michael looked uncomfortable.

“About what?””

The detective placed the evidence on the table.

The photographs.

The communication records.

The footage.

Michael’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Richard noticed.

“You knew.””

Michael looked at him.

“Richard…”

“You knew what Sophia was doing.””

Michael sat down.

“Listen to me.””

“No.””

Richard’s voice was stronger.

“I listened to you for years.””

Michael looked away.

Richard continued.

“I trusted you.””

Michael sighed.

“You don’t understand.””

Richard laughed sadly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Michael leaned forward.

“You think this was about stealing from you?””

Richard stared.

“What else would it be?””

Michael looked at Ethan.

Then back at Richard.

“It was about fixing a mistake.””

Richard frowned.

“What mistake?””

Michael said nothing.

That silence bothered Richard more than an answer.

Detective Carter leaned forward.

“Mr. Grant, explain.””

Michael rubbed his forehead.

“I never wanted Richard hurt.””

Ethan immediately spoke.

“But you helped them.””

Michael looked at him.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Michael’s eyes moved toward Richard.

“Because Sophia found something.””

Richard felt a chill.

“Found what?””

Michael hesitated.

Then he said:

“The truth about your son.””

Ethan froze.

“What?””

Michael opened another folder.

“I found records.””

Richard looked confused.

“What records?””

Michael placed a document on the table.

“Financial records from years ago.””

Ethan picked it up.

His face changed.

Richard looked at him.

“What is it?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

Detective Carter read it.

Then looked at Richard.

“Mr. Hale…”

“What?””

The detective chose his words carefully.

“This suggests Ethan had financial problems long before Sophia entered his life.””

Richard looked at his son.

Ethan’s face was full of shame.

“I was going to tell you.””

Richard felt something break inside him.

“What?””

“I lost money.””

“How much?””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“A lot.””

Richard sat back.

The anger he expected to feel never came.

Only sadness.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I thought you would see me as a failure.””

Richard looked at him.

“You thought losing money made you a failure?””

Ethan’s voice cracked.

“You worked your whole life. You built everything. I thought I had wasted everything.””

Richard was silent.

Then he said:

“Ethan, I never needed you to be perfect.””

The words hit him.

“I needed you to be honest.””

Michael looked uncomfortable.

Richard turned toward him.

“But Sophia knew?””

Michael nodded.

“She discovered the debts.””

“And used them.””

“Yes.””

Detective Carter looked at Michael.

“But you still helped.””

Michael lowered his head.

“I thought I could control the situation.””

Richard laughed quietly.

“You thought you could control Sophia?””

Michael said nothing.

Because he knew.

He couldn’t.

That evening, Richard returned home with Ethan.

The house felt different.

Not safer.

Just emptier.

Every room carried memories.

Every corner carried questions.

Ethan stopped in the hallway.

“Dad.””

Richard turned.

“Yes?””

“I don’t know how to fix this.””

Richard looked at him.

“Neither do I.””

Ethan nodded.

“I deserve that.””

Richard studied him.

“No.””

Ethan looked surprised.

“You don’t deserve forgiveness just because you’re sorry.””

The words hurt.

But Ethan accepted them.

“But you can earn trust again.””

Ethan nodded.

“I will.””

Then they heard something.

A sound from upstairs.

A door closing.

Both men froze.

Richard whispered:

“We’re not alone.””

Ethan immediately stepped forward.

“Stay here.””

“No.””

Richard grabbed his arm.

“You don’t protect me by pretending I’m helpless.””

They slowly walked upstairs.

The hallway was dark.

The bedroom door was open.

Inside, the drawers were pulled out.

Papers covered the floor.

Someone had searched the room.

Ethan looked around.

“They were looking for something.””

Richard picked up a torn envelope.

His name was written on it.

“What is that?””

Richard opened it.

Inside was a single note.

Five words.

*You still don’t know everything.*

Then his phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

Richard answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

“Richard Hale.””

His blood ran cold.

“Who is this?””

The voice replied:

“The person who knows what Sophia was really hiding.””

Richard tightened his grip on the phone.

“What do you want?””

A pause.

Then the voice said:

“Ask Ethan about the night his mother died.””

Richard looked at his son.

May you like

Ethan’s face went completely pale.

Because he knew exactly what that meant.
