Chapter 9: The Name Written In Blood

Nobody touched the envelope.

It sat in Michael’s hand like it weighed a hundred pounds.

The room had gone completely silent.

Even Daniel stopped moving.

He looked from me to his father, sensing that whatever was inside that envelope was different from everything before.

Michael stared at Victoria.

“What did you mean?””

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“I mean exactly what I said.””

“You’re telling me Daniel is connected to the man who destroyed the Carter family?””

She nodded.

Michael looked at the envelope.

Then back at her.

“Why would you know anything about Daniel’s father?””

The question hit the room harder than anything else.

Because everyone knew the answer.

Victoria knew because she had been there.

She had always been there.

I stepped forward.

“Michael.””

He looked at me.

My voice was barely steady.

“Open it.””

He slowly broke the seal.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Old.

Folded many times.

The handwriting was Victoria’s.

Michael began reading.

His expression changed after the first few lines.

Then the color drained from his face.

“What?””

I moved closer.

“What does it say?””

He didn’t answer.

“Michael.””

He looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

Then at Victoria.

“It’s a confession.””

Nobody spoke.

He continued reading.

“Thirty years ago, when Elizabeth was declared dead, I knew the Carter family would collapse without an heir…”

His voice became quieter.

“Victoria.””

She closed her eyes.

“I know.””

Michael kept reading.

“I made a deal with Robert Carter to protect the company.””

Elizabeth froze.

“Robert?””

Michael looked up.

“My father?””

Victoria nodded.

Elizabeth covered her mouth.

“No…”

Michael kept reading.

“Robert promised me that if I helped him remove Elizabeth from the family records, he would make sure I could keep the child I had taken.””

The room stopped.

The child.

Michael.

“You knew,” Elizabeth whispered.

Victoria looked at her.

“Yes.””

“You knew Robert stole my son.””

Victoria started crying.

“And I knew he planned to erase everything connected to you.””

Michael’s hands trembled.

“But what does this have to do with Daniel?””

Victoria looked at him.

“That’s the part I was trying to hide.””

My stomach tightened.

“What part?””

Victoria looked at Daniel.

“I found out the truth after your divorce.””

Michael frowned.

“What truth?””

She swallowed.

“Daniel’s biological father.””

The air disappeared from the room.

I felt like someone had hit me.

Michael stared at me.

I stared back.

Because there was only one answer that could destroy everything.

“No,” I whispered.

Victoria looked away.

“Emily…”

“No.””

My voice broke.

“That’s impossible.””

Michael’s face changed.

“What is she saying?””

I looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

But deep down, fear was already answering.

Victoria placed another document on the table.

“A DNA test.””

Michael picked it up.

His eyes scanned the page.

Then he looked at me.

The silence was unbearable.

“Emily.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“What?””

He didn’t answer.

“Michael, what does it say?””

His voice cracked.

“It says Daniel’s biological father…”

He stopped.

I felt Daniel’s hand tighten around mine.

“Who?””

Michael looked at the paper again.

Then at Victoria.

“You knew?””

Victoria whispered:

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Elizabeth stepped forward.

“Say the name.””

Victoria closed her eyes.

And finally spoke.

“Robert Carter.””

The world tilted.

Robert Carter.

The man whose crimes had destroyed an entire family.

The man who had stolen Michael’s identity.

The man who had built his fortune on lies.

Michael looked horrified.

“That’s impossible.””

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

“Emily?””

I couldn’t speak.

Because I didn’t know.

I had trusted the man who had been Daniel’s father.

The only father Daniel knew.

Michael.

But now another truth had appeared.

A truth I had never asked for.

A truth I never wanted.

Elizabeth looked at me carefully.

“Emily, did you know?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Michael looked at me.

And in that moment, I saw every emotion cross his face.

Shock.

Pain.

Confusion.

Fear.

Then something else.

Protection.

He immediately looked at Daniel.

My son was watching everyone.

He was scared.

“Mom?””

I knelt beside him.

“Yes?””

“Am I still me?””

The question broke my heart.

I pulled him into my arms.

“You are always you.””

“But everyone keeps finding things about me.””

I held him tighter.

“You are not a secret.””

Daniel looked at Michael.

“Dad?””

Michael swallowed.

“Yes, buddy?””

“Are you still my dad?””

Michael didn’t hesitate.

He dropped to his knees.

“Nothing changes that.””

“But the test…”

“The test can say whatever it wants.””

His voice shook.

“I was there when you took your first steps.””

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“I was there when you lost your first tooth.””

He touched Daniel’s shoulder.

“I was there when you were scared of thunderstorms.””

Daniel hugged him.

“And I’m still your dad.””

I turned away because I didn’t want anyone to see me cry.

Then Victoria spoke.

Quietly.

“I’m sorry.””

Nobody looked at her.

“I thought if I controlled the truth, I could control the damage.””

Michael stood.

“You spent your whole life doing that.””

“I know.””

“No.””

His voice hardened.

“You don’t.””

He pointed at the papers.

“You stole Elizabeth’s child.””

Victoria lowered her head.

“You stole my childhood.””

A tear fell down her face.

“I know.””

“You stole Emily’s chance to have a family.””

Another tear.

“I know.””

“You stole Daniel’s right to grow up without lies.””

Victoria whispered:

“I know.””

Then the front window shattered.

Everyone jumped.

A rock landed on the floor.

Tied around it was a small piece of paper.

Michael picked it up.

His face changed.

“What?””

He handed it to Elizabeth.

She read the message.

Then went pale.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

Elizabeth looked at Daniel.

The paper slipped from her hand.

And I picked it up.

May you like

Three words were written across it.

*HE KNOWS EVERYTHING.*
