Chapter 7: The Family Secret Beneath The Family Secret

We returned home with more questions than answers.

That had become the pattern of our lives.

Every truth opened another locked door.

Every door revealed another lie.

Michael sat in the living room staring at the message.

“Who sent this?””

Nobody knew.

Elizabeth looked terrified.

“That message means someone else knows.””

“Knows what?”” I asked.

She didn’t answer.

Michael stood.

“Elizabeth.””

She looked at him.

“What happened to my grandfather?””

Her face changed.

And I knew before she spoke.

The answer was going to hurt.

“My father wasn’t the only person Victoria betrayed.””

Michael frowned.

“Who else?””

Elizabeth looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

“She had help.””

The room went quiet.

“From who?””

Elizabeth hesitated.

Then said:

“Your grandfather.””

Michael froze.

“My grandfather?””

“Yes.””

I watched the confusion cross his face.

“My grandfather helped Victoria steal me?””

Elizabeth nodded.

“He was afraid the family name would be destroyed.””

Michael laughed.

“This is insane.””

“It is.””

Elizabeth pulled out another folder.

Inside were old photographs.

One showed Victoria.

One showed Elizabeth.

And one showed a man standing between them.

Michael stared.

“That’s my grandfather.””

Elizabeth nodded.

“He helped create the lie.””

“Why?””

“Because he wanted control of the company.””

Michael looked at the documents.

“Then why hide Daniel’s DNA results?””

Elizabeth’s expression became serious.

“Because Daniel’s DNA didn’t just prove who you were.””

She looked at my son.

“It proved who he was.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Me?””

I moved closer.

“Daniel, you don’t have to listen.””

But he shook his head.

“No. I want to know.””

The bravery in that sentence broke my heart.

Elizabeth opened another report.

“Your son is connected to the Carter family.””

Michael nodded.

“We know.””

“No.””

Elizabeth looked at him.

“You don’t.””

She pointed at the report.

“This isn’t just about inheritance.””

My stomach tightened.

“What else?””

Elizabeth looked at Daniel.

“He has a rare genetic marker.””

Michael frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means the person who sent this message knows exactly why Victoria was afraid.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Am I sick?””

I immediately pulled him close.

“No.””

Elizabeth shook her head.

“No, sweetheart.””

“Then why is everyone scared?””

Nobody had an answer.

Because sometimes children ask the question adults spend years avoiding.

Michael took the report.

“What does the marker mean?””

Elizabeth looked at him.

“It means Daniel can prove something nobody else can.””

“What?””

“That the Carter family fortune was stolen.””

The room went silent.

Michael stared.

“Because of his DNA?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Elizabeth pointed to the report.

“Your grandfather changed the legal documents decades ago. He transferred ownership illegally.””

Michael looked shocked.

“And Daniel?””

“Daniel’s DNA matches the original family line.””

I sat down.

The entire story suddenly became clear.

Victoria didn’t hide the DNA because she feared losing Michael.

She feared losing everything.

The company.

The money.

The power.

The life she built from a stolen identity.

Then Daniel’s tablet rang.

A video call.

Unknown caller.

Everyone looked at it.

Nobody moved.

Finally, Daniel answered.

A woman appeared on the screen.

An older woman.

Someone I had never seen.

She looked directly at Daniel.

And smiled.

“Hello, sweetheart.””

My blood ran cold.

Because Daniel looked at the screen and whispered:

“Grandma?””

I grabbed the tablet.

“That’s not your grandmother.””

The woman smiled wider.

“Yes, Emily.””

Her voice was calm.

“You’re right.””

May you like

She leaned closer.

“I’m the grandmother Victoria never wanted you to meet.””
