Chapter 2: The Secret Grandma Buried

The wedding music stopped.

The flowers moved gently in the wind.

And nobody breathed.

Michael stared at the envelope in Daniel’s hand like it was something dangerous.

“Where did you get that?”” he asked.

Daniel looked at Victoria.

“Grandma hid it.””

Victoria’s face turned pale.

“Give me that envelope.””

“No,” Daniel said.

The confidence in his voice shocked everyone.

He was seven years old.

But standing there, surrounded by adults who had spent years making decisions for him, he looked like the only person telling the truth.

Michael walked toward him slowly.

“Daniel, buddy, give me the envelope.””

My son looked at his father.

“Why didn’t you read Mom’s letters?””

Michael stopped.

The question hit harder than any accusation.

“I never got them.””

Daniel lifted the bundle.

“Yes, you did.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Her voice was sharp.

The same voice she used when Daniel was younger and asked why his father missed birthdays.

“Daniel is confused,” she said.

But Daniel shook his head.

“No, Grandma. You told me not to open the drawer because Dad would be angry if he found out.””

The guests began whispering.

Claire looked at Michael.

“What is he talking about?””

Michael didn’t answer.

His eyes stayed on Victoria.

“Mom?””

Victoria looked away.

That was the moment everyone understood.

She wasn’t confused.

She was hiding something.

I stepped forward.

“Michael, those letters were mine.””

He looked at me.

“I wrote to you after you left. I wrote about Daniel. I wrote about everything.””

His expression changed.

“I never saw them.””

“I know.””

“No,” he said quietly.

“I mean I never saw them because…”

He looked at his mother.

“Because you took them?””

Victoria’s jaw tightened.

“I did what I had to do.””

The garden went silent.

Michael laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“You stole letters from my wife?””

“She was destroying your life.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Destroying his life?””

Victoria pointed at me.

“You wanted him to come back.””

“Yes,” I said.

“Because we had a child.””

“You wanted control.””

“No. I wanted my son to have a father.””

Claire stepped away from Michael.

“I think someone needs to explain what is happening.””

Michael ignored her.

He looked at Daniel.

“Why did you bring that envelope?””

Daniel held it tighter.

“Because Grandma told me something.””

Everyone waited.

“She said Dad would never love me if he knew what was inside.””

Michael’s face changed instantly.

“What?””

I felt dizzy.

Victoria’s expression cracked.

“Daniel, don’t repeat things you don’t understand.””

But my son continued.

“She said my dad would leave again.””

Michael looked at his mother with horror.

“What did you tell him?””

Victoria didn’t answer.

Michael grabbed the envelope.

His hands were shaking.

He looked at me.

“Emily… did you know about this?””

“No.””

And I meant it.

I had never seen that envelope before.

Michael slowly opened it.

Inside was a single document.

A DNA report.

The guests watched as he scanned the page.

His face changed.

First confusion.

Then disbelief.

Then absolute fear.

Claire moved closer.

“What does it say?””

Michael didn’t respond.

“Michael?””

He looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

Then back at the paper.

“My God.””

Victoria whispered:

“Michael, don’t.””

That was the first time I had ever heard fear in her voice.

Michael folded the paper.

“No.””

He looked at his mother.

“You knew.””

Victoria started crying.

“I was protecting you.””

“Protecting me from what?””

She said nothing.

Michael’s voice became louder.

“From what?””

The entire wedding waited.

Then Michael turned the DNA report around.

And everyone saw the result.

The room exploded with whispers.

Because the test didn’t say what anyone expected.

It didn’t say Daniel wasn’t Michael’s son.

It said something much worse.

Michael looked at me with tears in his eyes.

“Emily…”

I stepped closer.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“The DNA test says Daniel is my son.””

I almost laughed.

“Then why are you acting like that?””

His hands trembled.

“Because the test also says…”

He stopped.

May you like

His eyes moved toward Victoria.

“…that the woman who raised me is not my biological mother.””
