Chapter 7: The Man Who Came Back

The name hung in the room like a threat.

Daniel Williams’ father.

A man everyone believed was gone.

A man whose shadow had followed Daniel for decades.

Victoria watched Daniel carefully.

The confident founder.

The calm leader.

The man who had faced angry executives without fear.

For the first time, he looked like someone’s son.

“Is he alive?””

Robert nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked away.

“How long has he been alive?””

“We don’t know.””

The next morning, the man arrived.

His name was Thomas Williams.

He walked into Hayes & Carter Financial wearing a perfectly tailored suit and carrying himself like he owned the building.

Victoria immediately understood something.

Daniel had spent his life proving he was nothing like this man.

Thomas looked around.

“So this is what you built.””

Daniel stood across from him.

“You came here after all these years.””

Thomas smiled.

“You sound disappointed.””

“I am.””

The room was tense.

Victoria stayed near the doorway.

She wanted to leave.

But she knew this moment mattered.

Thomas looked at the employees.

“Everyone here should know the truth.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“What truth?””

“That this company exists because of me.””

Nobody spoke.

Victoria frowned.

“That’s not true.””

Thomas looked at her.

“And you are?””

“Victoria Hayes.””

Thomas smiled.

“Eleanor’s granddaughter.””

Victoria felt uncomfortable.

“You knew my grandmother?””

Thomas laughed softly.

“I knew everyone involved.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Explain.””

Thomas walked toward the conference table.

“When you were young, Daniel, you were too proud.””

Daniel said nothing.

“You thought you could build something without anyone.””

Thomas continued.

“You forgot one thing.””

“What?””

“Every empire needs someone willing to make sacrifices.””

Victoria noticed Daniel’s hands tighten.

“You stole from me.””

Thomas smiled.

“I protected you.””

“By destroying my first business?””

“By teaching you.””

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“You left my mother.””

Thomas looked away.

For a second, his confidence disappeared.

Then it returned.

“Your mother was weak.””

Victoria felt anger.

Daniel remained calm.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“She was the strongest person I knew.””

Thomas laughed.

“And yet she needed Eleanor Hayes to save you.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“What are you talking about?””

Thomas looked at her.

“You really don’t know?””

The room became silent.

He smiled.

“Your grandmother didn’t just help Daniel.””

Victoria felt a chill.

“What?””

“She helped both of us.””

Daniel stared.

Thomas continued.

“Your grandmother knew I had failed. She knew I had made mistakes.””

He leaned against the table.

“She gave me a choice.””

Daniel whispered:

“What choice?””

Thomas looked at him.

“She offered me a way back.””

Nobody moved.

“She told me if I wanted my family back, I had to change.””

Victoria looked confused.

“But you didn’t.””

Thomas smiled sadly.

“No.””

For the first time, he sounded honest.

“I was too angry.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Then why come back now?””

Thomas reached into his briefcase.

He placed an old notebook on the table.

“Because I found this.””

Daniel opened it.

Inside were pages written by Eleanor Hayes.

His grandmother’s handwriting.

Victoria immediately recognized it.

Daniel read silently.

Then he stopped.

“What?””

He looked at Victoria.

“Your grandmother knew something.””

“What?””

Daniel handed her the notebook.

Victoria read the final page.

It said:

“Daniel and Victoria’s family must never repeat the same mistake. Power without compassion destroys everything it touches.””

Victoria looked up.

“Why does it mention my family?””

Thomas answered.

“Because your grandmother knew one day you would run this company.””

Victoria felt a strange fear.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

Thomas looked at Daniel.

“She believed you would build something great.””

Then he looked at Victoria.

“But she worried someone would inherit the company and forget why it was created.””

The words hurt.

Because Victoria knew.

That person had almost been her.

Daniel closed the notebook.

“What do you want?””

Thomas looked at him.

“Forgiveness.””

The request shocked everyone.

Daniel stared.

“You spent your entire life hurting people.””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

“And now you want forgiveness?””

Thomas lowered his eyes.

“I want a chance to fix what I broke.””

No one spoke.

Then Victoria’s phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From an unknown number.

She opened it.

Her face changed.

Because the message contained a photograph.

A recent photograph.

Of Richard Cole.

May you like

And the person standing beside him.

A person who was supposed to be gone.
