Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Uniform

Victoria arrived early the next morning.

For the first time in years, she didn’t walk into the office feeling powerful.

She walked in feeling uncertain.

Daniel was in the lobby again.

Mopping the same marble floor where everything had started.

She watched him for several seconds.

Then she approached.

“Mr. Williams.””

He looked up.

“Good morning, Victoria.””

She noticed something.

He no longer called her Ms. Hayes.

The difference was small.

But she felt it.

“Can I ask you something?””

Daniel leaned on the mop handle.

“Of course.””

“Why?””

He smiled slightly.

“Why what?””

“Why work here like this?””

Daniel looked around the lobby.

At the employees passing by.

At the walls covered with company history.

“Because this place forgot something important.””

Victoria waited.

Daniel continued.

“When I started this company, I had nothing. No office. No investors. No reputation.””

He touched the wooden handle of the mop.

“I cleaned buildings at night to pay my bills.””

Victoria listened quietly.

“I learned something during those years.””

“What?””

“Everyone notices the person in the corner when they need something from them. But very few people notice them when they don’t.””

The words hit her.

Daniel looked at the floor.

“When I stepped away from leadership, I wanted to know if the company still valued people without titles.””

Victoria lowered her eyes.

“So you became a janitor to test everyone?””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I became a janitor because I missed remembering where I came from.””

That answer surprised her.

Before she could respond, Sarah walked by.

Daniel smiled.

“Sarah, how is your mother?””

Sarah stopped.

“She’s doing better. Thank you for asking.””

Victoria noticed.

He remembered small details about people.

Things she never bothered to learn.

Later that afternoon, Victoria found Daniel sitting alone in the break room.

She hesitated before entering.

“I owe you an apology.””

Daniel looked up.

She took a breath.

“I embarrassed you. I spoke to you like you were less important because of your job.””

Daniel nodded.

“That is true.””

She accepted the honesty.

“I was wrong.””

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Daniel asked:

“Do you know what bothered me most yesterday?””

Victoria looked at him.

“I thought it was the disrespect.””

“It was.””

He paused.

“But what bothered me more was how quickly everyone became afraid to defend someone.””

Victoria looked away.

Because she knew.

She had created that fear.

A week later, the board held another meeting.

Victoria entered expecting a decision.

Daniel sat at the end of the table.

Robert opened the file.

“Before we discuss Ms. Hayes’ position, there is new information.””

Victoria frowned.

“What information?””

Robert looked at Daniel.

“Mr. Williams received evidence that someone inside the company has been manipulating reports.””

Victoria looked confused.

“Manipulating?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

A folder was placed in front of her.

Inside were financial records.

Someone had been hiding losses.

Someone had been making Victoria look successful while secretly damaging the company.

She looked up.

“Who did this?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel said:

“The person who benefited from you being too focused on power to notice what was happening.””

The conference room door suddenly opened.

A familiar voice said:

“Maybe it’s time we stop pretending Victoria is the problem.””

Everyone turned.

Standing in the doorway was the last person Victoria expected to see.

Her own mentor.

And in his hand was a document with Daniel Williams’ signature on it.
