Chapter 6: The Truth Someone Buried

Victoria read the sentence again.

Then again.

“The night his company was saved.””

Her grandmother had always been described as kind.

Quiet.

Generous.

But now there was something else.

Something hidden.

She immediately went to Daniel’s office.

He wasn’t there.

She checked the lobby.

The break room.

The employee entrance.

Nothing.

Finally, she found him sitting outside near the building’s garden.

The same place where employees often took their lunch breaks.

“Daniel.””

He looked up.

“You found something.””

It wasn’t a question.

Victoria sat beside him.

“My grandmother helped you. But there’s something you don’t know.””

Daniel’s expression became serious.

“What did you find?””

She handed him the document.

He read it slowly.

The color left his face.

For the first time since she met him, Victoria saw him shaken.

“What is it?””

Daniel folded the paper.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

He looked away.

“There was an event years ago. A night when everything almost collapsed.””

“What happened?””

Daniel was quiet.

Then he spoke.

“When I started the company, I needed a loan. A small one. Enough to rent an office and hire my first employees.””

Victoria listened.

“But the bank rejected me.””

“Because they didn’t believe in you?””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“Because they believed people like me didn’t belong in rooms like that.””

Victoria felt anger rise.

“What happened next?””

“My business partner at the time told me he found another option.””

Daniel looked at the ground.

“He said someone was willing to help.””

“Who?””

“I never knew.””

Victoria frowned.

“Wait. You don’t know who saved your company?””

“No.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Daniel nodded.

“That’s why this document matters.””

Victoria looked at the paper.

“My grandmother?””

“Maybe.””

They sat silently.

Then Daniel said something unexpected.

“Your grandmother always refused to tell me what she did.””

Victoria looked at him.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you ask?””

Daniel smiled faintly.

“Because she made me promise.””

“Promise what?””

“That I would never chase gratitude from someone who gave help freely.””

Victoria looked down.

Her grandmother’s values were everywhere.

Even in the things Daniel didn’t know.

That evening, Daniel asked the board to open old company records.

Victoria joined him.

For hours, they searched through documents.

Then Robert Carter found something.

“Daniel.””

Everyone turned.

Robert held an old file.

“There’s a name here.””

Daniel stood.

“Who?””

Robert looked uncomfortable.

“It’s impossible.””

“Read it.””

Robert looked at Victoria.

Then back at Daniel.

“Margaret Williams.””

Daniel froze.

Victoria frowned.

“Who is Margaret Williams?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel slowly sat down.

“My mother.””

The room became silent.

“You never mentioned her.””

Daniel stared at the file.

“Because she disappeared before I built this company.””

Victoria looked confused.

“Disappeared?””

Daniel nodded.

“She left when I was young.””

“Why?””

“I never knew.””

Inside the file was a letter.

Old.

Yellowed.

Daniel opened it carefully.

His hands trembled.

The letter began:

“Daniel, if you ever read this, it means someone finally found the truth.””

Victoria watched his face change as he read.

Then he stopped.

“What does it say?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He handed the letter to her.

Victoria read:

“Your father left behind debts that were not yours to carry. I found Eleanor Hayes because she was the only person willing to help us. She protected your future when I could not.””

Victoria looked at Daniel.

His eyes were wet.

The truth was becoming clearer.

His company had not been saved by one person.

It had been saved by two women.

His mother.

And Victoria’s grandmother.

But there was another line at the bottom.

A line that changed everything.

“Daniel, I left because someone inside our family wanted you to fail.””

Victoria looked up.

“Someone wanted you to fail?””

Daniel stared at the letter.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Before he could answer, the office phone rang.

Robert picked it up.

His expression changed.

“What?””

Everyone looked at him.

He slowly lowered the phone.

“Daniel…”

“What happened?””

Robert swallowed.

“The person who tried to destroy your company years ago just contacted us.””

Daniel stood.

“Who?””

May you like

Robert looked toward Victoria.

“Your father.””
