Chapter 9: The Final Lie
I drove home without remembering the drive.
My mind was stuck between two impossible truths.
Vanessa had lied.
Emily had lied.
Daniel had lied.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone except Maya.
My daughter was the only person who had told me the truth.
The eleven-year-old girl everyone treated like she couldn’t handle reality was the only person brave enough to show me it.
When I arrived home, the lights were on.
Vanessa was sitting in the living room.
Waiting.
She looked exhausted.
Like someone who had finally realized running was no longer possible.
“You know,” she said.
It wasn’t a question.
I placed my phone on the table.
The photo was already open.
Her face changed.
“I can explain.””
I laughed quietly.
“Everyone says that.””
She looked down.
“Marcus.””
“No.””
I sat across from her.
“I want the truth.””
She nodded.
“I owe you that.””
“You owed me that eleven years ago.””
She closed her eyes.
“You’re right.””
For the first time, she didn’t fight.
No excuses.
No anger.
Just exhaustion.
“Daniel contacted me after Emily died.””
“Why?””
“To tell me he wanted Maya.””
“And you helped him?””
“No.””
I stared at her.
She looked up.
“I was trying to stop him.””
“Then why did you meet him?””
“Because I needed information.””
“You paid him.””
Her face changed.
“He blackmailed me.””
“With what?””
“With the truth.””
“What truth?””
Vanessa looked toward the stairs.
Toward Maya’s room.
Then she whispered:
“The truth that I knew Emily was planning to leave you.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Before the accident, Emily was going to tell you everything.””
“What everything?””
“That Maya wasn’t biologically yours.””
I shook my head.
“I already know that.””
“No.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“You don’t know the important part.””
My chest tightened.
“What important part?””
She took a deep breath.
“Emily had another reason for choosing you.””
I waited.
“She knew Daniel was dangerous.””
“Dangerous how?””
“She found out he had been following her.””
My stomach turned.
“Following?””
“He wanted control.””
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
“Because she was afraid you would confront him.””
I looked away.
That sounded like Emily.
She always worried about everyone else.
Even when she was the one in danger.
Vanessa continued.
“She asked me to help her create a legal plan.””
“What plan?””
“A plan where Maya would be protected if anything happened.””
I looked at her.
“And you betrayed her.””
Tears filled Vanessa’s eyes.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I was jealous.””
I said nothing.
“She had everything I wanted.””
“What?””
“A family. A husband who loved her. A daughter.””
My face hardened.
“So you tried to take it.””
“Yes.””
The word hung between us.
No excuses.
No defense.
Just the truth.
“I hated that she trusted me.””
My voice became quiet.
“And then she died.””
Vanessa nodded.
“And I thought I could finally have the life she had.””
I felt sick.
“You married me because of Maya.””
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
Even though I expected it.
“I loved you too.””
“Too?””
She looked down.
“But at first, yes.””
I stood.
“Why bring Daniel back?””
“Because he found out about the adoption.””
“And?””
“He wanted money.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He said if I didn’t help him get custody, he would tell you everything.””
“Everything?””
“The affair. The paternity. Emily’s plan.””
I shook my head.
“You chose yourself.””
“Yes.””
The word was barely audible.
“Yes, I did.””
I walked toward the stairs.
Then stopped.
“Maya deserves the truth.””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“Marcus.””
“No more secrets.””
Before I could move, my phone rang.
Aaron.
I answered.
“Marcus.””
His voice sounded urgent.
“We found something.””
“What?””
“The accident report.””
“I already know what happened.””
“No, you don’t.””
I felt cold.
“What are you saying?””
“There was a witness.””
I froze.
“A witness to the crash?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t I know?””
“Because the witness statement was removed from the file.””
My heart started pounding.
“Who removed it?””
Silence.
Then Aaron said:
“Vanessa.””
I looked across the room.
She was staring at me.
And from her expression, I knew.
She knew exactly what was coming.
“What did the witness say?”” I asked.
Aaron’s voice lowered.
“Marcus, the witness claims Emily’s car wasn’t hit by accident.””
I couldn’t move.
“What?””
“She claims someone followed Emily onto that road.””
My eyes locked on Vanessa.
Aaron continued:
“And the person driving the other car…”
May you like
A pause.
“Was Daniel.””
