Chapter 5: The Truth About Emily
I spent the entire night searching through old documents.
Not because I wanted to.
Because Vanessa’s words wouldn’t leave my mind.
You knew there was a possibility.
A possibility of what?
That Maya wasn’t mine?
The thought felt like a knife.
Not because I loved her less.
Because I hated that someone had taken something sacred and turned it into a weapon.
At three in the morning, I found the old folder.
The one I hadn’t opened in years.
Hospital records.
Birth certificates.
Insurance documents.
Everything from Maya’s first days.
I sat at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee that went cold beside me.
Then I saw it.
A paper I had forgotten existed.
A letter from the hospital.
A paternity acknowledgment form.
My name was there.
My signature was there.
But underneath it was a handwritten note.
A note that wasn’t mine.
I stared at the handwriting.
Then I recognized it.
Emily.
Maya’s mother.
My hands shook as I unfolded it.
Marcus,
If you’re reading this, something must have happened.
I hope it never does.
But I need you to know the truth.
Before Maya was born, I was scared.
I made mistakes.
I hurt people.
But you never left.
You were there when I was sick. You were there when I cried. You were there when everyone else told me to figure things out alone.
Maya is yours in every way that matters.
But there is something I never told you.
I stopped reading.
My chest tightened.
There was more.
I forced myself to continue.
Daniel found out about the pregnancy after we separated.
He wanted to be involved only when it benefited him.
He disappeared when things became difficult.
I chose you because you were the one who stayed.
But I was afraid that one day he would come back and try to take away the life we built.
I looked at the date.
The letter was written eleven years ago.
Before Maya was born.
Before I became a father.
Before Emily died.
A sound came from behind me.
“Maya?””
She stood in the doorway.
I quickly folded the letter.
“You should be asleep.””
She walked in slowly.
“Are you leaving?””
The question surprised me.
“No.””
She looked relieved.
“Okay.””
She sat across from me.
“Dad?””
“Yeah?””
“Are you still my dad?””
I didn’t hesitate.
“Always.””
She nodded.
Then she said something that made me look up.
“Mom knew.””
“What?””
“Maya, what did you say?””
She looked nervous.
“Vanessa told me once.””
“What did she tell you?””
“That my mom knew Daniel.””
I went still.
“When?””
“Last year.””
I stared at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Vanessa told me not to.””
“Why?””
“She said you would get angry.””
My hands tightened.
“What else did she say?””
Maya looked down.
“She said my mom made bad choices.””
I stood up.
Not because I was angry at Maya.
Because I needed to move before my anger consumed me.
Emily had been dead for seven years.
And Vanessa was using her memory to hurt my daughter.
That was something I could not forgive.
The next day, I confronted Vanessa.
She was still at the house.
Packing.
She looked surprised when I walked in.
“What are you doing here?””
“Answer one question.””
She froze.
“What?””
“Why did you tell Maya things about Emily?””
Her face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
“I didn’t.””
“Don’t lie.””
“Marcus—”
“Maya told me.””
Vanessa looked toward the stairs.
Then back at me.
“She misunderstood.””
“She’s eleven.””
“She doesn’t understand adult situations.””
I stepped closer.
“No. She understands cruelty.””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“You think I’m cruel?””
“I think you knew exactly what you were doing.””
She shook her head.
“You don’t know everything.””
“Then tell me.””
Silence.
Again.
Always silence.
Finally, she whispered:
“Emily knew Daniel wasn’t gone forever.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“She knew he might come back.””
“And?””
“And she was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Afraid that if Daniel came back, you would find out everything.””
The room felt colder.
“What everything?””
Vanessa looked toward the suitcase.
Then she said the words I never expected.
“Emily wasn’t the only one who lied to you.””
My heart stopped.
“Who else?””
Vanessa reached into her bag.
She pulled out an envelope.
Then she placed it on the table.
“I kept this because I knew someday you would ask.””
I stared at the envelope.
My name was written on the front.
But the handwriting wasn’t Vanessa’s.
It wasn’t Emily’s either.
It was Daniel’s.
I opened it slowly.
Inside was a single page.
Only one sentence was written.
Marcus,
You have spent eleven years raising my daughter, but you never asked why Emily chose you instead of me.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What is this?””
She whispered:
“The truth about the night Maya was born.””
And when I turned the page over, I saw a hospital room number.
A room I remembered.
May you like
A room where I thought my entire life began.
But according to Daniel’s letter, that was the room where my life had been built on the biggest lie of all.
